Casting Net: Jennifer Aniston in talks for 'Mean Moms'; Plus, Will Smith, Tina Fey, more

• Jennifer Aniston is reportedly in talks to star in Mean Moms, an upcoming New Line pic based on Rosalind Wiseman‘s book about parenting. TV-vet Beth McCarthy-Miller, who recently directed The Sound of Music Live, is set to direct the comedy, which is reportedly scripted in the vein of Mean Girls (also based on one of Wiseman’s books). The story follows a mother who moves to a fancy suburb from a small town and is suddenly pitted against an army of hypercompetitive parents. [The Wrap]

• Will Smith is in early talks to star in Legendary’s sci-fi thriller Brilliance, an adaptation of Marcus Sakey‘s novel that posits a world where 1 percent of the population is born with special powers. Smith would play a federal agent on the hunt for a fellow savant who is using his powers to start a civil war. Julius Onah is set to direct. [The Wrap]

• Tina Fey is attached to star in and produce The Taliban Shuffle, based on Kim Barker’s funny and incisive memoir about her experiences reporting on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Michiko Kakutani even compared Barker to Fey in her 2011 review of the book, writing: “She depicts herself as a sort of Tina Fey character, who unexpectedly finds herself addicted to the adrenaline rush of war.” Fey had her 30 Rock collaborator Robert Carlock will pen the script. • Edward Norton will star in and direct his own adaptation of Jonathan Lethem‘s postmodern detective novel Motherless Brooklyn. Norton previously directed Keeping the Faith. [Deadline]
