'Captain America: The Winter Soldier': New clip teases a darker world -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Looks like the star-spangled “man with a plan” is about to get a crash course in the modern world.

We’ve known for awhile now that Captain America: The Winter Soldier (out April 4) will take us in a different direction from 2011’s inaugural outing, which introduced us to the wartime hero via 1942’s WWII era. Cap 2 finds Steve Rogers — no longer the fish out of the water as he was in 2012’s Avengers — working for S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside fellow agent Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). And although Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury believes that “we’re going to neutralize a lot of threats before they even happen” with the superhero’s help, it looks like that sentiment won’t be as easy as killing some traitors in an elevator.

A host of new actors join the series, including high-flying ally Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Robert Redford, whose Big Brother-type character — Alexander Pierce, a longtime Fury ally from the comics — is shrouded in Marvel’s trademark secrecy. But as the clip below shows, the big change for this film isn’t just the S.H.I.E.L.D.-heavy vibe. Cap 2, which seems to be heavily centered on Steve Rogers’ struggle of trust, will be deeply rooted in government conspiracies, paranoia, and cover-ups — all things that play rather nicely into the “blast from the past” reveal of the bio-engineered assassin known as The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

You may remember Stan from a critical role in the first film.

“Just when you think Cap has embraced the fact that his previous life is gone, his old life comes in and punches him in the face in the form of the Winter Soldier,” says Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

Can’t wait til April 4? Let this new exclusive behind-the-scenes compilation tide you over.
