Casting Net: Charlize Theron in talks to star in, produce 'American Express'; Plus, Alec Baldwin, more

• Charlize Theron is reportedly in talks to star in and produce American Express, an indie for director Nash Edgerton. Plot details are being kept under wraps as the film is shopped at Cannes. Theron can be seen next in Seth MacFarlane‘s A Million Ways to Die in the West (May 30). [The Wrap]

• Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) has been cast in Warren Beatty‘s untitled Howard Hughes pic about the reclusive mogul’s assistant (Alden Erenreich) and his burgeoning relationship with Lily Collins. Baldwin will play Hughes’ lawyer Bob Mayhew. Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, and Matthew Broderick will also star. [Deadline]

• Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) will star opposite Kate Winslet and Isla Fisher in The Dressmaker, a romantic drama set in Australia about a woman who returns home after she was accused of being a murderer as a child. It’s based on Rosalie Ham‘s novel, and Proof helmer Jocelyn Moorhouse is set to direct. [THR]

• Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) will join Shirley Maclaine and Alan Arkin in Wild Oats, a road trip comedy about a widower and retiree who accidentally receives a $5 million life insurance check (instead of $50K). Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama) is directing. [Variety]

• Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel), Toby Jones (The Hunger Games), and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) will lend their voices to the animated Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost. [Variety]

• Vera Farmiga, who also stars in Bates Motel, and Peter Sarsgaard (Blue Jasmine) are set for the comedy Prima, about a mother hell-bent on getting her daughter the lead in Sleeping Beauty. Sarsgaard will play the hardened dance instructor. Black Swan‘s Benjamin Millepied will choreograph the Evan Greenberg-directed pic. [Variety]

• Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) has boarded The Great Gilly Hopkins, an adaptation of the Katherine Paterson novel starring Sophia Nelisse (The Book Thief) in the title role. Kathy Bates, Octavia Spencer, and Glenn Close will also star. [Deadline]
