Box-office update: 'Purge' beats 'Apes' with a $13 million Friday

The Apes don’t have chest-beating rights in the Friday box office, having surrendered their Darwinistic dominance to the apex predators of The Purge: Anarchy after only one week at the top.

The acclaimed sequel (of a reboot to a remake) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes collected $10.4 million last night in a rather precipitous 62 percent plunge from its $27.6 million debut last Friday, ceding the No. 1 slot to the survival-horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy, which transformed mayhem and savagery in the streets into a $13 million debut.

The per-theater average shows an even greater disparity. The Purge sequel earned $4,635 from about 2,800 theaters, while Apes was on about 1,000 more screens but only collected an average of $2,620 from those 3,900 locations.

Another sequel—this one much more family friendly—opened in third place, with Planes: Fire and Rescue earning $6.3 million in roughly 3,800 theaters, a so-so tally for an animated film in the summer, although such films tend to do better on Saturdays and Sundays when parents are off work and can take the kids to a matinee. Fire & Rescue also aims more toward the kiddie audience, with fewer grown-up fans than, say, How to Train Your Dragon 2, so its opening night gross was expected to be smaller.

The raunchy comedy Sex Tape has no such excuse, obviously. Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s naughty slapstick farce came in fourth with only $5.7 million in about 3,000 theaters. That well below Diaz’s $9.3 million Friday debut for The Other Woman back in April, and is a rare stumble for the comedy actress, whose previous film with Segel, 2011′s Bad Teacher, was an unabashed blockbuster with $216.2 million worldwide. (A sequel is now in the works.) But don’t expect one for Sex Tape unless things change dramatically this weekend.

Here’s the top five:

1. The Purge: Anarchy — $13 million Friday (new)
2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $10.4 million Friday ($113.4 domestic total)
3. Planes: Fire & Rescue – $6.3 million Friday (new)
4. Sex Tape – $5.7 million Friday (new)
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction – $2.7 million Friday ($219.9 million domestic total)

Check back in tomorrow for the full weekend report.
