Should you decide to walk the show floor of San Diego’s Comic-Con International, you might come across a bat-themed surprise: the actual cowl that will be worn by Ben Affleck in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is on display at the convention today.

It may seem like just a cape, but there’s much to be gleaned from its appearance. As DC co-publisher Jim Lee stated in an interview with USA Today, the cape has “a very low drag coefficient,” and suggests “a boxer’s physique.” (A refresher, in case you’re a little rusty on your rudimentary fluid dynamics: Wikipedia defines drag coefficient as “a dimensionless quantity that is used to quantify the drag or resistance of an object in a fluid environment, such as air or water.” It is very important when fighting crime.)

You may also notice, as Screenrant points out, the cowl’s neck doesn’t look like it can allow for a lot of movement. At surface level, this seems like a step backward, since The Dark Knight featured a suit that finally allowed the wearer to turn his head. But a cowl on a stand is very different from a cowl on Ben Affleck, and since we currently only have one picture to go on, it’s not all that clear how the mechanics of the suit will work. Batfleck will at least be able to look downwards, though. You know. To find his batarangs and such.

The cowl, of course, is just one part of the Bat-ensemble. Granted, it is probably the coolest and most important part, because it allows for great dramatic poses. And, like, +20 Brooding.
