Box office update: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' rocket to No. 1

It looks like a pizza party may be in order.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brought in an estimated $25.6 million on its first day in theaters, including $4.6 million from screenings on Thursday night. Though it was widely expected to be in a tight race for No. 1 with Guardians of the Galaxy, TMNT more than doubled the estimated Friday earnings of Marvel’s reigning champ ($12.34 million).

The big opening day puts the $125 million Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies reboot on track to take in around $62 million this weekend, beating analyst and studio estimates of a $40 million start. Audiences were mostly male (61 percent) and age 25 or older (55 percent); they were more receptive to the movie than critics, awarding it a Cinema Score of B, though kids exiting the theaters gave it an A.

The tornado pic Into the Storm (Cinema Score: B) earned an estimated $6.5 million on Friday, likely ending up with around $18 million for the weekend. The Warner Bros. film cost an estimated $50 million to produce.

Disney’s The Hundred-Foot Journey (Cinema Score: A) took fourth place on Friday with $3.65 million. The sentimental foodie pic, starring Helen Mirren and produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, could earn around $10 million this weekend.

Finally, the dancers of Step Up All In (Cinema Score: B+) snagged fifth place with an estimated $2.84 million Friday. The fifth installment in the franchise will likely open lower than any of its predecessors. As of Saturday morning it looks on track to make around $7 million this weekend. With its $2.8 million on Friday, Luc Besson’s Lucy raised its domestic total to $90.8 million.

In limited release, the indie romantic comedy What If  (Cinema Score: A-) starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan grossed an estimated $49,000 from 20 locations.
