Casting Net: Jennifer Lawrence, Francis Lawrence join James Cameron for 'The Dive'

Jennifer Lawrence and Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence will be joining the James Cameron’s The Dive. The film will tell the real life story of husband and wife freedivers Francisco “Pipin” Ferraras and Audrey Mestre, who compete to travel as deep underwater as possible on just one breath. Lawrence is set to play Mestre, who died in her attempt to beat her own world record of 557.7 feet. Cameron filmed the real life tribute Ferraras paid to Mestre when he dove to that same depth. Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) is in final talks to lend his voice as Papa Smurf to the Sony Pictures Animations’ reboot of The Smurfs. Sony has already explored the franchise with its to live-action/animation Smurfs films. But this film is supposed to be the first fully animated venture by Sony. The movie will tell the origin story of the little blue people and their paternal leader, Papa Smurf. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Colin Hanks, Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts, and singer Sky Ferreira have all joined the cast of Elvis & Nixon. The indie flick, starring Michael Shannon as Elvis, watches the singer head to Washington D.C. to meet President Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey). Pettyfer willing be playing Jerry Schilling, the King’s best friend, while Hanks is cast as Nixon’s aide Egil Krogh. Knoxville will be portraying Elvis’ head of security and Ferreira will be debuting on screen as Schilling’s love interest. The film has been in the works since 2011, when originally, Eric Bana was cast as Nixon. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Italian actress Matilda Lutz has been given the lead in F. Javier Gutierrez‘s horror movie Rings, which will continue the story of the Paramount Ring franchise. The film will feature Samara, the antagonist from the original films, and a deadly videotape. However, Naomi Watts, from the original film, will not be a part of the project. [The Wrap]

The new trailer for Universal Pictures’ Endless Love remake sets up the classic story of rich girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer and newcomer Gabriella Wilde (who can be seen in the upcoming remake of Carrie) play the film’s star-crossed lovers obliviously caught up in a steamy coming-of-age romance.

Things take a turn for the dramatic when Wilde’s on screen father (played by Star Trek’s Bruce Greenwood) gets wind of their relationship, begins uncovering Pettyfer’s dark past, and tries to stop his daughter’s whirlwind relationship.

Casting Net: Seth Rogen to direct, produce, star in 'The Interview'; Plus 'Hercules' adds to its cast, more

• Seth Rogen just got a whole lot busier. The This Is the End actor and director has signed on to direct, produce, and star in a comedy that he co-wrote with Evan Goldberg — Rogen’s collaborator on Superbad, Pineapple Express, and The Watch, among others. The Interview is about a talk show host and a producer (Rogen) who somehow find themselves involved in an attempt to assassinate the North Korean prime minister. This will be Rogen’s second time in the director’s chair. And, don’t get too excited just yet, but apparently Columbia Pictures wants James Franco to star as the talk show host. [THR]

• Brett Ratner’s Hercules added a host of actors to the cast, Thursday, including Ian McShane (Jack the Giant Slayer), Rufus Sewell (The Holiday), Joseph Fiennes (American Horror Story), and John Hurt (Melancholia). According to the press release announcing the news, the revisionist film is set in a world where the supernatural doesn’t exist. The Dwayne Johnson vehicle is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and is expected to be released in theaters on July 25, 2014.

Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) have signed on to star in Endless Love. Scott Spencer’s 1979 book tells the story of David Axelrod and Jade Butterfield, who are desperately in love with one another. When Jade’s father forbids David from their home, he sets fire to it, hoping that they’ll forgive him when he rescues all of them. Franco Zeffirelli directed a 1981 adaptation of the novel with Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. [Variety]

Schwartzman will play Richard Morton Sherman, who penned many of the songs in the Disney version of Mary Poppins; Giamatti will play Travers’ L.A. chauffeur; and Wilson will play Travers’ mother in flashback sequences. John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) is directing from the script by Kelly Marcel (creator of the Fox series Terra Nova). • Vince Vaughn may be keen on branching beyond his current comedy persona. His production company Wild West Picture Show Productions, has picked up the rights to Ridley Pearson’s thriller The Risk Agent — about a hard-charging hostage extraction expert working to free a Chinese citizen in Shanghai — as a possible starring vehicle for Vaughn. The project remains in the development stage, however, so it has a long road to hoe before getting a greenlight. [Deadline]
