Jason Schwartzman gets acerbic in this 'Listen Up Philip' clip

Director Alex Ross Perry takes a chainsaw to the tweedy highbrow literary scene and the toxic men who inhabit it in Listen Up Philip.

Philip Lewis Friedman (Jason Schwartzman) is one of those fully realized personalities. A successful novelist awaiting the publication of his second book, Philip is at turns cripplingly insecure and a megalomaniac who’s unafraid to alienate and offend. In this exclusive clip, you’ll see Philip meeting up with an ex early in the film.

With the droll, unflinching narration (from Eric Bogosian), and bristly intelligent humor, it’s an indicative sample of the belligerent arrogance Philip displays throughout the film as he leaves his girlfriend (Elisabeth Moss) in the city and retreats to the country house of his literary idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce) for some peace. EW spoke with Perry about his third feature, its cinematic and literary influences, the value in dark humor and why this film transcends the misogyny of the wretched men at its center

Sundance 2014: Elisabeth Moss tells Jason Schwartzman he's impossible to live with in 'Listen Up Philip' trailer

Philip is not for everyone.

An accomplished novelist, and world-class narcissist, the lead character (portrayed by Jason Schwartzman) of director Alex Ross Perry’s Listen Up Philip at least leaves quite an impression on the people he encounters, whether they’re his literary idols, his ex-girlfriends, random photo assistants, or the girl who happens to be living at the country house he retreats to.

In the first teaser for Perry’s third feature, premiering at Sundance on Jan. 20, we’re treated to bits from the supporting characters in his life. Some are reaching out to help, some are having heartfelt conversations, and some are just telling him to back off, but all are looking straight into the camera — putting the viewer in Philip’s place. Take a look after the jump.

Sundance 2014: Jason Schwartzman channels a jerk in 'Listen Up Philip' -- EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

Philip is not the most likable guy. In the first few seconds of director Alex Ross Perry’s film, Listen Up Philip (premiering at Sundance on Jan. 20), we see Philip (Jason Schwartzman) rushing down a New York street as a narrator (Eric Bogosian) explains that he’s “characteristically not in a hurry, but perpetually enraged by slow foot traffic before him.”

It’s the perfect intro to the character that you’re about to spend the next 108 minutes with as the embittered, narcissistic writer navigates his life, the stresses behind the release of his second novel, and his crumbling relationship. But you can’t seem to look away.

Casting Net: Meet your new Lance Armstrong; Plus, Vin Diesel is the 'World's Most Wanted,' more

• Biopics can be challenging to cast. Not only do you need a great actor, there has to be at least a passable physical resemblance. For someone as infamous as Lance Armstrong, the task is all the more difficult. Ben Foster, a former Disney star who transformed into a serious, respected actor as an adult, is in final talks to take on the role of the disgraced super athlete for Working Title. With a script from John Hodge (Trainspotting) and Oscar-nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen) helming the movie, the untitled project is aiming for a fall shoot and will focus on the doping scandal.  There are two other Lance Armstrong movies in development at Warner Bros. and Paramount/Bad Robot (the project where the Bradley Cooper casting rumors started) as well.  Foster can be seen next in the Sundance hits Kill Your Darlings, and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. [Deadline]
