Emma Stone on her childhood fashion: 'I wanted to dress like the Spice Girls'

Nowadays, Emma Stone is a red-carpet trendsetter who favors forward-thinking designs by the likes of Elie Saab, Lanvin, and Gucci. But the Amazing Spider-Man star has some hilarious fashion skeletons in her closet, too. In a chat with EW for our new “My Life in Movies” series, in which we talk to actors about the films that inspire them, Stone confesses she was once a dedicated wannabe of a certain ’90s girl group that wasn’t exactly known for having a refined style. “I wanted to dress like the Spice Girls [when I was a kid],” Stone says. “I got platform Skechers. I had bell-bottoms. A lot of peace signs. I cut bangs like Baby Spice because I had blond hair. I wanted to be Baby Spice. I wasn’t Baby because my voice sounded exactly like it does now, and I had that spunky energy going on — I wasn’t [does a baby voice] super demure and sweet. But I really wanted to be.”

Stone also credited Beetlejuice‘s ghoul-loving Lydia (Winona Ryder) as a fashion inspiration and named Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall look as the movie costume she’d most like to wear. “I went as her for Halloween a couple years ago,” Stone says. “I was just like, ‘I want to wear this every day.’”

It’s gotta be the eyes. Emma Stone will receive MTV’s first Trailblazer Award at the network’s annual MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3. Stone, who stars in the upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man opposite Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), most recently starred in last summer’s Oscar-nominated The Help and won the Golden Popcorn for Best Comedic Performance for her work in Crazy, Stupid, Love at last year’s awards.

The new award was created to “call out actors beloved by the MTV audience who are carving out their own unique and diverse path within Hollywood,” the network said. Stone has starred in a wide range of films, from comedy to drama, and next month takes on action in Spidey.

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards will be hosted by comedian Russell Brand. Presenters include Adam Sandler, Emma Watson, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Stone’s co-star Andrew Garfield, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Mila Kunis, and Mark Wahlberg. Rapper Wiz Khalifa and pop group .fun are also scheduled to perform.

'Gangster Squad' trailer: Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin go up against a dirty Sean Penn

When Gangster Squad was filming in Los Angeles last fall, the Internet went a little crazy cooing over the many paparazzi shots of Ryan Gosling decked out in slick 1940s suits and cuddling with an adorable bull dog (and Emma Stone). Oh, and then there was the shot of Gosling beating some guy with a tie iron.

Now the trailer for the fall thriller — about a group of L.A. cops (led by Josh Brolin’s WWII vet) who set aside their badges to declare war on gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) — has finally hit, and the movie looks much more like a beating-a-guy-with-a-tire-iron movie than hanging-out-with-a-cute-pooch movie. Oscars 2012: EW goes inside the star-studded rehearsals for tonight's show! -- PHOTOS

Billy … who?

In a place full of celebrity sightings, sometimes even the host can find himself camouflaged.

Tonight the 84th annual Oscars bring a close to Hollywood’s award season, but before that, EW takes you behind the scenes as stars gather to rehearse the big telecast.

Here’s what happened when Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Emma Stone, Christian Bale, Tom Hanks, and the ladies of Bridesmaids (among others) came together to put on a show. Even past Oscar-winners like Gwyneth Paltrow, pictured here, can have a “d’oh” moment.

Among the stories from backstage over the past two days is the hilariously bizarre account of what happened when the voice of Darth Vader met Miracle Max — and said he mistook him for “a hoodlum.”

It’s rehearsal time for the Academy Awards, and a woman striding offstage pretending to be a winner is holding an Oscar so fake it could be a child’s art project.

In the shadows beside a great velvet curtain, the stand-in for best actress comes face to face with none other than the real Tom Cruise, who has an envelope clasped in his hands and is waiting for his cue to walk out and practice presenting the next award.

The Mission: Impossible star tips a slight bow and raises his eyebrows with a wry, mega-watt smile. “Congratulations!” he declares, like he really, really, means it. Really. He chuckles, and – after a beat – so does the stunned stand-in.

If sincerity is the goal, it is surely one of Cruise’s worst-ever performance. But he’s just goofing around.

That’s the great thing about being backstage in the final few days before the Academy Awards — guards are down, and a guy like Cruise can just kid around. Though the crew is working hard, the stars are literally going through the motions.

Tonight when the real show begins (8:30 p.m. Eastern and 5:30 Pacific, on ABC), the pressure returns for everyone with a vengeance.

'Gangster Squad': Director Ruben Fleischer on working with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin (...and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone)

Wilson Webb

Ruben Fleischer made his Hollywood bones with Zombieland, the clever and funny zombie apocalypse movie that famously offed Bill Murray. But for his next movie, the 37-year-old director is taking deadly aim at a more serious genre. “I love gangster movies like Goodfellas and Miller’s Crossing,” says Fleischer, “and L.A. noir films like Chinatown are also awesome.” Next fall’s Gangster Squad, an action-drama about the 1940s cops who battled Mickey Cohen’s mob for control of the City of Angels, is the perfect mesh of the two. Speaking from L.A., where he’s readying a violent shootout on Hollywood Boulevard on day 67 of filming, Fleischer discussed the humbling effects of filming at the city’s most famous landmarks, the amazing Sean Penn, and why audiences are ready to embrace Josh Brolin as a hero.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This is a totally different direction for you after Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less. How did you go about convincing the studio that you were the right guy for this movie? READ FULL STORY »

'The Help': Emma Stone on Allison Janney's outrageous ad-lib

The extras on the new Blu-ray of last summer’s Southern-fried hit The Help, out today, are a scant mix of a making-of doc, a featurette, and some amusing deleted scenes. (The anemic DVD has only the latter.) But according to star Emma Stone, one of the movie’s funniest — and dirtiest — moments may have been lost forever on the cutting-room floor.

It happened while she was shooting a scene in which her character, Skeeter Phelan, nervously introduces her new boyfriend (Chris Lowell) to her iron-willed mother (Allison Janney). READ FULL STORY »
