Andy Samberg on hosting the Spirit Awards and what's up his (ripped-off) sleeve

With the Film Independent Spirit Awards looming on Saturday, Feb. 23 (IFC, 10 p.m), Andy Samberg has been rigorously preparing to shine as the host. Make that rise and shine. “It’s actually filmed at 1:30 in the afternoon, so I’m slowly trying to change my sleep schedule,” says the SNL vet and star of Celeste and Jesse Forever. “Every standup worth his salt will tell you that the best comedy happens at 1:30 p.m., so I’m looking forward to that. Other than that, just trying to eat right, do a lot of crunches and yoga, and get my body and mind right and in tune with one another so I can come out and really dominate the stage, which I’m told is very shallow.”

This much we know: Jason Bateman, Salma Hayek, Common (LUV), and New Girl star Jake Johnson (Safety Not Guaranteed) will be among the presenters at the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards, EW has learned. Two cast members from Parks and Recreation, Rashida Jones (Celeste and Jesse Forever) and Aubrey Plaza (Safety Not Guaranteed), also will log some podium time at the Santa Monica-based ceremony.

The awards show, which airs Feb. 23 (IFC, 10 p.m.), will be hosted by SNL alum Andy Samberg, who stars with Jones in Celeste and Jesse Forever. Silver Linings Playbook and Moonrise Kingdom lead all films with five nominations each.

Warning: Celeste and Jesse Forever may make you cry.

The quirky romantic comedy starring Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg is about two best friends falling out of love with each other and getting divorced, while still trying to remain good friends. “We wanted to show a realistic portrayal about what it’s like to go through a breakup,” said Jones, who in addition to starring in the film co-wrote the script with friend Will McCormack. “And yeah, it’s totally sad. But it’s also weirdly funny.”

Jones discussed with EW her love of classic romantic comedies such as Annie Hall and Broadcast News and how she enjoys that rom-coms can explore the relationship questions of the day, such as when When Harry Met Sally asked if women and men can be “just” friends.

“[I] wanted to see if we could explore a new notion which was, ‘Can you actually go right into being friends with your ex?’” Jones explained. “I feel like I know so many couples who they meet and fall in love right after college and they have that first big adult love. But then they change, and their lives change, and they want their relationships to effect that change and the relationship doesn’t make sense any more. You don’t want to lose them, so what do you do with that relationship? Can you manage to find a way to have them in your life?” READ FULL STORY »

Runaway kids and a guy with a runaway temper led the Independent Spirit Award nominations with Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook collecting five bids each, including best picture.

Their rivals in the best picture race are Bernie, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Keep the Lights On.

With big-screen behemoths like Lincoln, Argo, and Les Miserables dominating Oscar talk, Film Independent’s awards  — chosen by filmmakers, actors, critics, and festival programers — cast the spotlight on some smaller films that are nonetheless worthy of consideration this award season.

Independent Spirit Awards will be held Feb. 23

It’s almost Hollywood law: After the super-human slog of awards season, on the day preceding the Academy Awards, everyone gets to dress down and let loose at the Independent Spirit Awards.

So it has been, and so it shall be again — Film Independent, the not-for-profit organization behind the Indie Spirits, announced Wednesday that the 28th Indie Spirit Awards will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, the day before the 85th Oscar ceremony.

The show will be broadcast that night on IFC at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Nominations for the Indie Spirits will be announced on Nov. 27. At the 27th Spirit Awards, held last February and hosted by Seth Rogen, The Artist became the first film since 1986′s Platoon to win the top prize at both the Indie Spirits and the Academy Awards.

With its giant white tent on the sunny Santa Monica, Calif. beach, and the throngs of black-suited, fast-talking Europeans smoking outside, one could easily mistake the Independent Spirit Awards for a Los Angeles annex of the Cannes Film Festival. The event certainly took on an international flavor this year, with The Artist — which premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival — taking home four awards, including Best Feature, Best Male Lead (Jean Dujardin), and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius). (Check out the full list of winners here.) The bulk of the folks from The Artist only made it to the Indie Spirit tent in time for Hazanavicius’ win, driving directly from the airport after flying in from the César Awards in France. Actress Penelope Ann Miller, who has a small supporting role as the haughty wife of Dujardin’s silent movie star, ended up accepting both her co-star’s award and Guillaume Schiffman’s award for Best Cinematography.

Should The Artist also prevail at the Academy Awards on Sunday evening, as most everyone predicts it will, the silent film will be only the first film since 1986′s Platoon to win the top prize at both the Indie Spirits and the Oscars. READ FULL STORY »
