Box office update: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' leads with $20.3 mil on Friday; 'The Avengers' becomes third biggest movie of all time

No poison apple here. The action fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman debuted to a solid $20.3 million on Friday, according to early estimates, and is headed for a $55 million weekend.

That should come as a relief to Universal Pictures, which released the floundering Battleship two weeks ago. The result is also a boon for star Kristen Stewart, who had yet to successfully open a movie outside the Twilight franchise. Still, Snow White arrived with a pricey $170 million budget and will need to also perform admirably overseas to justify its cost. READ FULL STORY

Box office preview: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' ready to take bite out of competition

After a sluggish Memorial Day weekend, Hollywood is offering audiences only one new major release this weekend. Luckily, it’s the fairest in the land.

The revisionist action-adventure fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman should have no difficulty dethroning Men in Black 3 and taking the box-office crown. But how big will the movie be? Snow White could very well surprise the industry with a larger-than-anticipated debut, but I’m not counting on it. Instead, I’m anticipating a respectable opening in the mid-40s. Here are my weekend predictions: READ FULL STORY

'Snow White and the Huntsman' featurette: The Huntsman speaks -- EXCLUSIVE

In this exclusive featurette from Snow White and the Huntsman, the Huntsman himself (Chris Hemsworth) takes you behind-the-scenes to discuss his character, who is hired by the evil queen (Charlize Theron) to bring her Snow White (Kristen Stewart).

Previously we’ve mostly just been treated to growls and intimidating glares, but now we can see Hemsworth explain the initial attraction between himself and Snow White. “There’s something special about this girl.”

Cannes: 'On the Road,' with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, is a reverent, if not overly faithful ramble

on-the-road

In On the Road, Walter Salles’ reverent, at times almost painfully faithful adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s birth-of-the-Beat-spirit novel, the characters are always getting high on one thing or another, and I don’t just mean drugs — though they do smoke weed and dissolve Benzedrine into their coffee. They also go to after-hours clubs and listen to twisty ecstatic jazz, their bodies shaking and writhing as the music works its way inside them. They have a lot of sex, too, some of it pretty exposed (hello, NC-17!): On a car ride to nowhere, Sal (Sam Riley), the Kerouac character, who is eager but recessive — a boy-man taking careful stock of everything he drinks in — gets naked in the front seat along with Dean (Garret Hedlund), the Neal Cassady life-force stud narcissist, and Marylou (Kristen Stewart), Dean’s naively game young ex-wife, who is seated, also naked, between the two men as she pleasures each of them with her hands. (I’m not kidding when I say that Kristen Stewart acts this scene very well — for once, she looks more ebullient than cool.) The other high at work is the religion of words. Sal keeps dipping into a volume of Proust, and he types into the night and scribbles in his notebook, doing all that he can to give form to feeling. READ FULL STORY

Cannes 2012 preview: Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, and Kristen Stewart bring Hollywood glitz to the French Riviera -- VIDEO

Since its inception in 1947, the Cannes Film Festival has been the ne plus ultra of international cinema, but rarely has the festival featured quite so many American filmmakers and Hollywood movie stars. The 2012 Cannes festival gets underway on Wednesday with the opening film, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, and over the course of the subsequent 11 days, the festival will premiere films starring (deep breath) Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart, Zac Efron, Shia LaBeouf, Robert Pattinson, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Hardy, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, and Matthew McConaughey (in two movies!), with filmmakers like Anderson, Lee Daniels, and John Hillcoat screening their films in competition for the first time. Meanwhile, DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and the HBO TV movie Hemingway & Gellhorn are both premiering out of competition.

EW’s Owen Gleiberman will be detailing all his thoughts on the great and not so great at Cannes, but here’s a quick primer on what’s likely to light up the famed Croisette, in chronological order of their big premieres inside the cavernous Grand Théâtre Lumière.  READ FULL STORY

'Snow White and the Huntsman' clips: Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's off to fight we go! -- VIDEO

Kristen Stewart, who has been mostly silent in the first several Huntsman trailers, finally finds her voice in seven new Snow White and the Huntsman clips released by Universal. And boy is it booming. The Twilight star shows off her pipes in a screaming match with a troll, a steely-eyed showdown with Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen, and more. Still, looking at the tender moment she shares with that troll, it’s hard not to recall Robert Pattinson’s awkward gaze on the other side.

The septet of sneak peeks is chockablock with action, conflict, and special effects — including the very special effect Snow has on her dwarf mantourage and the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). Also, one clip offers up an introduction to the Prince (Sam Claflin), who is less Charming than you might imagine. Watch below. READ FULL STORY

Kristen Stewart's next move: The gritty, action-y 'Cali'

EW has confirmed that Kristen Stewart will star (and receive a producing credit) in Cali. As first reported by Variety, Cali — set unsurprisingly in Los Angeles — was written by 30 Minutes or Less‘ Michael Diliberti, and centers on a couple with a healthy love of danger and bad choices, who sell a fake snuff film featuring Stewart’s character.

Stewart will next be seen as Snow White in June 1’s Snow White and the Huntsman

New 'Twilight' photos! Bella, Edward, and Jacob face off?

As we inch closer to Nov. 16, Summit is offering up more glimpses of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn–Part 2. In two newly released photos, we see Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) in a semi-embrace.

As you can see, left, Bella is rocking new, blood-red vamp eyes, after her painful transition in Part 1. Though spending your honeymoon on the brink of death is no way to start a marriage, readers of Stephenie Meyer’s book will know there’s some fun in store for the newlyweds.

As for Jacob (Taylor Lautner)…well…he doesn’t seem to be having a quite such a good time. Check out the second photo below!
