Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' will feature body-doubles for graphic sex scenes

It turns out that Lars von Trier’s next movie, Nymphomaniac, will use body doubles for its controversial sex scenes after all.

At Cannes this week, producer Louise Vesth said there would be graphic sex scenes between the members of the cast, which includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Shia LaBeouf, and Uma Thurman, but there would also be body-doubles. “We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body-doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two,” Vesth explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”

Vesth’s comments are a reversal from what LaBeouf originally told reporters when he signed on to the project, which is now planned as two full-length movies expected to debut this December. LaBeouf previously said, “We’re doing it for real … everything is happening. It’s going to be a wild movie, man.”

For now, fans hoping to catch the actor completely in the beouf will have to make due with this Sigur Ros music video.

Magnolia Pictures to distribute Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

Thanks to Magnolia Pictures, it won’t be long before American audiences can finally see Shia LaBeouf have real sex on camera. (The sacrifices he’ll make for his art!)

The distributor has announced that it has secured the U.S. rights to Nymphomaniac, a “wild and poetic story” about one woman’s erotic journey from Melancholia director Lars von Trier. The deal was settled after Magnolia recently caught a screening of footage from the film in Berlin.

“After the tremendous and never predictable experience of distributing Melancholia, we couldn’t be more excited to be working with Mr. von Trier again,” Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles said in a statement. “He’s such an exciting and talented filmmaker—it’s an honor and a thrill to be associated with his world.”

• Shia LaBeouf — apparently undeterred by the onslaught of “Shia LaBuff” jokes in the wake of his full-frontal appearance in a recent Sigur Ros music video — is in talks for an unspecified role in director Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac. As the title implies, the film follows the erotic adventures of a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) from her first sexual experience through age 50, with von Trier shooting both explicit and not-as-explicit versions of the film. Stellan Skarsgard will play the woman’s husband, but likely not her only sexual partner, because that would be a bit of a let down, frankly. • Ryan Reynolds is going spooky, starring in the psychological thriller Queen of the Night, about a father who begins to think is missing daughter is still alive eight years after she was abducted thanks to a series of unnerving clues. Director Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter) also penned the script with David Fraser. They’ll start shooting in February. [Deadline]

• Donald Faison (Clueless, NBC’s Scrubs) is in talks to join Kick-Ass 2 as Dr. Gravity, a heroic compatriot (and Columbia University English major) to the title masked vigilante. Aaron JohnsonChloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all returning for the sequel. Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) is writing and directing; original helmer Matthew Vaughn is producing. It starts shooting this fall. [Deadline]

Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgard as newlyweds in 'Melancholia' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Besides being the film whose Cannes press conference caused such a ruckus, Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia was one of the most fascinating movies to play at that festival this year. The beautiful and ambitious film is comprised of two segments: Part one takes place at the drama-filled wedding reception of Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgard (how’s that for a gorgeous couple), and part two, a while later, follows a severely depressed Dunst, her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland) as they await the possible collision between Earth and the newly-discovered planet Melancholia. Dunst’s performance won her the Best Actress prize at Cannes and could score her an Oscar nod (though it’s quite a crowded field this year). Audiences can currently see Dunst and Skarsgard as newlyweds on demand or when the film hits theaters on Nov. 11; in the meantime, here’s an exclusive clip of the pair near the beginning of the film as they try to maneuver a stretch limo on a winding and narrow driveway. The clip doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of the film’s gravitas, but it gives you a sense of Von Trier’s uniquely naturalistic style.  READ FULL STORY »

Lars von Trier facing investigation over Hitler comments

Danish film director Lars von Trier says he’s facing charges of violating a French law against justification of war crimes over statements he made about Adolf Hitler and Jews during the film festival in Cannes.

Von Trier addressed the investigation in a brief statement Wednesday that he said would be his last, ever.

“Due to these serious accusations I have realized that I do not possess the skills to express myself unequivocally and I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews,” von Trier said. READ FULL STORY »

Lars von Trier on 'Nymphomaniac': 'I can't make a film about the sexual evolution of a woman without showing penetration'

Lars-Von-Trier

Lars von Trier is certainly no stranger to controversial film subjects (uh, Antichrist, anyone?), but even he recognizes that his next project, Nymphomaniac — which will show the sexual evolution of a woman from birth to age 50 — might be a tough sell. The 55-year-old  filmmaker confirmed that the potentially explicit material (which he is currently writing and hoping to shoot next summer) might need to have two versions — a hardcore cut and a more mainstream-friendly one. “It depends a little bit on how it’s financed,” he says. “As a cultural radical I can’t make a film about the sexual evolution of a woman from zero to 50 without showing penetration. I know it’s something very European,” he laughs. However, “that doesn’t mean it will be a porn film, “he says. “It principally it is a film with a lot of sex in it and also a lot of philosophy.” READ FULL STORY »

Lars von Trier issues new, improved condemnation of his Nazi remarks

Lars-Von-Trier

Don’t try to defend Lars von Trier. He is now denouncing himself.

The Danish director was expelled from the Cannes Film Festival last week after making some bad-taste jokes about being a Nazi, sympathizing with Hitler, and considering Israelis “a pain in the ass.” He apologized immediately, and obviously wasn’t being serious — though the remarks will still hurtful to many.

Even those close to him, such as Kirsten Dunst, who won the festival’s best actress prize for her role in his end-of-the-world drama Melancholia, have criticized him for what he said in the movie’s press conference, calling his remarks “idiotic.”

But when the oppressive Iranian government leaps to your defense with a letter slamming the festival …? Apparently, von Trier has decided he doesn’t need friends like that.

He denounced his own remarks anew today …

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lars von Trier: When, and why, does a celebrity's bad behavior cross the line into unacceptability?

Arnold-Schwarzenegger

What makes a celebrity into a scoundrel? The answer may seem simple — do what Mel Gibson did! Or Charlie Sheen! Or Lindsay Lohan! Or Arnold! — but when you really think about it, the answer isn’t simple at all. A lot of celebrities do a lot of bad things. They cheat on their wives and husbands and girlfriends and boyfriends. They consume alcohol and drugs in volumes that would cripple a horse (I can think of one prominent actress who became a junkie just at the moment when she hit her It Girl fame, although it never did become public). They go to rehab, and then they relapse. READ FULL STORY »

Cannes Film Festival: 'Le Havre' remains a favorite port in the festival storm

Now, in the final lap of the Cannes Film Festival, is the time when we critics begin comparing notes and conjecturing meaninglessly on possible prize winners. (Analyze this: What will jury president Robert De Niro like? And have Lars von Trier’s thoughtless comments, reported at face value by disingenuous journalists with no time for context, ruined the chances for von Trier’s great movie Melancholia?) Meanwhile, as we shmooze and quantify, here’s a quiet headline: There’s not a critic I know, including me, who READ FULL STORY »
