Something strange is happening in the Southwest.

When a group of road-tripping MIT students on the hunt for a mysterious hacker venture into a particularly isolated desert stretch, everything goes dark. Nic (played by The Giver‘s Brenton Thwaites) eventually regains consciousness and finds himself bruised and disoriented. He’s a prisoner in a contained room, staring down a gravely serious, possibly menacing Laurence Fishburne. Also disconcerting? Fishburne is the only party in a protective hazmat suit.

'Man of Steel' Blu-ray: The Superman story that needed to be told -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

“He’s the king of all superheroes. He exists in a weird way outside of comic-book culture.” — Zack Snyder

If Man of Steel wasn’t the king of all superhero movies, it was still an ambitious and exciting starting point for a new take on our most iconic caped character. Henry Cavill’s son of Krypton is an alien — always has been — and as writer David Goyer explains in an exclusive bonus video from the new Blu-ray, the Superman story that demanded to be told was one of first-contact. “You’re the answer,” Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) tells his adopted son in the film. “You’re the answer to, ‘Are we alone in the universe?’”

In a lot of ways, and most certainly for the future of DC Comics’ grand plan, Superman is a giant gateway. His very existence opens the doors to a bigger, almost infinite, universe that an established — but Earth-bound — box-office brawler like Batman can’t really deliver, and Man of Steel set the table. Perhaps Superman is that White Knight that Bruce Wayne once envisioned who would make Batman’s burden unnecessary — but we know it won’t be a smooth or cordial handover in the upcoming sequel, Batman Vs. Superman.

In the exclusive video below from the Man of Steel Blu-ray, which arrives Nov. 11, the cast and crew discuss the never-ending obsession with the character of Superman. Love, like, or simply shrug at this past summer’s reboot, it’s difficult not to be excited about the next chapter.

Ferrell is expected to star in the movie, which he’s producing with frequent collaborator Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Other Guys). Etan Cohen (yes, Etan, not Oscar-winning dark comedy filmmaker Ethan Cohen) will make his feature directorial debut with the project. Cohen’s screenwriting credits include Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3. Ferrell will play a mild-mannered radio exec whose life gets turned upside down when his wife’s freeloading ex-husband (Vaughn) re-enters the picture and he must vie for his step-children’s affections. Up, up, and away! 'Man of Steel' will be released in 3-D and IMAX

man-of-steel

It’s a bird, it’s a plane! Nope, it’s the news that Man of Steel will be released in 3-D in select movie theaters, as well as in 2D and IMAX, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced on Wednesday. The film’s slated for release June 14, 2013.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as resident caped superhero Superman/Clark Kent, alongside Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Russell Crowe, and a bevy of others.

“The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man of Steel to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience,” said Snyder in a statement. “We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”

Laurence Fishburne as Mr. White! Inside the all-black (almost) 'Reservoir Dogs' reading

Imagine a very smooth, very self-satisfied rattlesnake.

That was what Terrence Howard brought to the role of Mr. Blonde, the casually homicidal madman of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs in a one-night-only live-reading of the script last night.

Now picture an older guy, who probably should be thinking about retirement, but realizes too late he has thrown in with the wrong thugs — and he left his medication at home. That was what Laurence Fishburne did with the part of Mr. White, originated by Harvey Keitel.

Up in the Air and Young Adult filmmaker Jason Reitman has been creating these events for the past five months, with one more to go in the series. This time around, he decided to take a movie that once featured an all-white cast and replace it with an entire group of black actors (with one exception.)

Though the event is not recorded, EW has this to share from the cinematic experiment …
