'Ted': Mark Wahlberg on the hilarious white-trash name scene in Seth MacFarlane's first film -- RED BAND TRAILER

Somewhere between The Hangover and The Tooth Fairy — or, more aptly, between Family Guy and Walt Disney – lies Ted, the feature film directing debut from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. About John, a grown man (Mark Wahlberg), and Ted, the adorable teddy bear his childhood wish brought to life (voiced by MacFarlane), the film aims to tell the story of what happens after the happily-ever-after ending of most family-friendly fairy tales. According to the red-band trailer that hit the web on Sunday, that apparently includes pot smoking, some profane dating advice, and John and Ted cowering from a thunderstorm in bed with John’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis) while singing their comfort song with the rousing chorus, “F— you, thunder!”

In other words, Ted is that lifelong best buddy who keeps you from fully entering adulthood. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a crapload of fun — like when he goads John into unspooling a litany of white trash girls’ names. You need to see it to believe it; watch the NSFW trailer below:  READ FULL STORY »

SXSW: Seth MacFarlane previews footage, and a special surprise guest, from his feature directorial debut, 'Ted'

After conquering television with his Family Guy/Cleveland Show/American Dad empire, could Seth MacFarlane become a titan of big screen comedy too?

That’s the impression left today at SXSW, after MacFarlane screened over ten minutes of footage from Ted, his feature directorial debut. The story of a thirtysomething guy (Mark Wahlberg) who still hangs out with the teddy bear his childhood wish brought to life 25 years before, Ted, MacFarlane explained, is what would happen after the end of a family-friendly Disney movie…about a young boy and his living teddy bear. To illustrate his point, MacFarlane then debuted the first eight minutes of the film, which unfolds as a family-friendly Disney story would, but in miniature. READ FULL STORY »

Box office report: 'Contraband' tops 'Beauty and the Beast 3D' with $24.1 mil

CONTRABAND-02

We’re counting on Gaston Wahlberg to lead the way! In a weekend that saw both the Mark Wahlberg thriller Contraband and Disney’s 3-D re-release of Beauty and the Beast perform better than expected, it was the former that crossed the finish line in first place.

The R-rated Contraband, which stars Wahlberg as a former smuggler trying to protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, earned an estimated $24.1 million over the standard three-day weekend, and looks to finish the four-day holiday weekend with about $28 million. That’s a solid start for the $25 million movie, a remake of the 2008 Icelandic thriller Reykjavík-Rotterdam. It also represents Wahlberg’s strongest solo debut since 2008′s The Happening. (What? No!)

Contraband confirmed Wahlberg’s ability to open a movie, as 69 percent of CinemaScore’s participants listed the actor as their reason for buying a ticket. It received an overall “A-” from the tracking service’s graders, indicating positive word of mouth. But the movie will have to contend with a number of action films in the coming weeks, including Haywire, Underworld: Awakening, and The Grey. READ FULL STORY »

Box office update: 'Contraband' snags first place with $8.7 mil on Friday

2012 is doing just fine, thank you very much. While last year saw moviegoing attendance drop to its lowest level in 16 years, this young year has so far been a pleasant surprise for Hollywood. That was the case on Friday, as both Contraband and Beauty and the Beast 3D exceeded industry expectations.

Contraband, the R-rated Mark Wahlberg smuggling thriller, led the box office with an estimated $8.7 million on Friday. That puts it on pace for a four-day holiday weekend take of about $28 million, which is solid business for a film that cost just $25 million to produce. Despite mediocre reviews, audiences enjoyed watching Marky Mark in tough-guy action mode, with CinemaScore participants handing the movie an “A-” grade. Of particular note is that 69 percent of CinemaScore’s moviegoers listed Wahlberg as their reason for buying a ticket. So if anyone was still questioning whether Wahlberg could carry a film, those doubts have been erased. READ FULL STORY »

Box office preview: 'Contraband' and 'Beauty and the Beast 3D' face off over MLK weekend

Contraband

This Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, Mark Wahlberg will be facing off against a beloved animated classic and a Georgia church choir. And every movie will have to contend with a little American tradition known as the NFL playoffs. I’m giving the edge to Wahlberg’s action thriller Contraband, but don’t be surprised if Disney’s 3-D re-release of Beauty and the Beast gives Marky Mark a run for the money.

Here’s how I think the box office will play out over the four-day holiday weekend: READ FULL STORY »

David O. Russell exits 'Uncharted'

David O. Russell is no longer working on Uncharted, Sony’s movie adaptation of the hit video game that he hoped to make with Mark Wahlberg. Variety reported that the Oscar-nominated director (The Fighter) exited over creative differences, and EW has confirmed his departure and the studio’s determination to move ahead with a previous draft of the script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. A spokesperson for Wahlberg, who was never officially attached to the project, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
