Casting Net: Al Pacino and Brian De Palma to tell Penn State coach Joe Paterno's story. Plus: Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino, Dylan McDermott

Al Pacino is reteaming with his Scarface director Brian De Palma for a biopic of the legendary rise and ignoble fall of Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno. The script will be based on the book Paterno by Joe Posnanski, but with the working title of Happy Valley. Dave McKenna (American History XBlow) is in talks to pen the screenplay. [Deadline]

• Patrick StewartCarla Gugino, and Matthew Lillard have all signed up to star in Match, an adaptation of the 2004 Tony-nominated play about a veteran dance instructor (Stewart) whose past comes back to haunt him when a couple (Gugino and Lillard) arrive at his home under the false pretense of an interview for the wife’s thesis. Stephen Belber, who wrote the play, is directing from his own adaptation. Dylan McDermott is set to star in Freezer, an indie thriller about a regular joe who wakes up and discovers he’s locked in an industrial freezer by some Russians who insist he’s stolen $8 million from them (which he hasn’t). Mikael Salomon (Hard Rain) will direct from a script by Tom Doganoglu and Shane Weisfeld. 'Fat Kid Rules The World': Matthew Lillard weighs in on his directorial debut

If a fat kid really did rule the world, then a movie version of KL Going‘s 2003 book Fat Kid Rules The World would have hit cinema screens years ago. But it took actor-turned-first-time director Matthew Lillard (Scream, The Descendants) almost a decade to get his adaptation of the young adult novel in the can and a subsequent, successful Kickstarter campaign to guarantee a run in theaters. (The film opens this Friday at New York’s Cinema Village, followed by a nationwide roll out. Fat Kid Rules The World will also be available on VOD and iTunes on Oct. 25.)

Below, Lillard talks about making this tale of an overweight, suicidal high schooler, played by Jacob Wysocki (ABC Family’s Huge), who is recruited to play drums in a band called the Tectonics by Matt O’Leary’s charismatic, drug-addicted guitarist.
