Box office preview: 'Riddick' poised to dominate slow weekend; 'Instructions Not Included' expanding

The booming box office summer is over, and vacation season has officially come to a close. Kids are back in school, parents have lost their summer Fridays, and for many Americans, attention will now shift to the start of NFL football, which kicks off on Sunday. In short, it’s not a great weekend for the movies.

Only one new wide release is hitting theaters this week (along with 23 indies): Universal’s unlikely Vin Diesel sequel Riddick, which should top the chart with ease. Also hoping to make a splash is the Spanish-language comedy Instructions Not Included, which broke out last weekend with $10.4 million and is now getting a significant expansion by distributor Pantelion. Meanwhile, last weekend’s champion over the Friday-Sunday period, One Direction: This Is Us, may plummet out of the top five altogether. Here’s how the chart will likely shake out:

Morgan Spurlock on One Direction doc: 'More shirtless moments than you can imagine'

Have you seen the trailer for the One Direction documentary, This is Us? Did you want there to be more shirtlessness? Did you want there to be more robots? Then we’re here to bring you a double-shot of good news. In a Twitter Q&A earlier today, director Morgan Spurlock — who once ate so much McDonald’s he became famous — gave more details about the film, which is being released in 3-D on Aug. 30.

To recap: The fivesome all care deeply about one another, all have great hair, and all treat Spurlock as if he were furniture. Will they be wearing shirts in the movie? They’re wild! Shirts are expensive. Music makes family. Who is Spurlock’s favorite guy? That’s one mystery he’ll never tell.

Why does the teaser trailer for One Direction’s upcoming concert movie helpfully begin with a title card that confirms viewers are, in fact, about to watch the teaser trailer for One Direction’s upcoming concert movie? Maybe it’s simply to give die-hard Directioners extra time to get their squeals out.

In any case, the teaser’s pretty much what you’d expect — voiceovers from the guys about how they never thought they’d get this famous, performance footage, backstage goofing off, and nearly wall-to-wall shrieking, courtesy of the group’s ginormous teen girl fanbase. (Directioners really give Beliebers a run for their money.) The one thing that’s missing: Any sort of personal stamp from Super Size Me‘s Morgan Spurlock, who directed the film. One Direction gets 3-D concert movie directed by... Morgan Spurlock?

Wait, what?

Academy Award-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock — best known for taking aim at McDonald’s with Super Size Me — will direct a 3-D concert film starring One Direction, the British boy band that’s stolen tweenage hearts around the world. According to a press release, the film will be released Labor Day weekend 2013 — the perfect pre-school year pick-me-up.

“This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” Spurlock said in a statement. “To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.” READ FULL STORY
