Paramount Pictures has set the theater release date for the sequel to 2004′s Anchorman for Dec. 20, 2013.

Will Ferrell will be back as deep-voiced newsman Ron Burgundy, along with Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner in the comedy directed by script co-writer Adam McKay. McKay has hinted that the sequel will have whole song sequences, and we can only imagine Ferrell’s thick Burgundy mustache fluttering in the breeze during a diva number backed by the Channel 4 News gang.

Paramount Pictures announced late Friday that tomorrow’s planned world premiere of the Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher has been postponed “due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken.”

Based on the pulp thrillers by author Lee Child, the PG-13 film opens with a random shooting in a public place as seen through a sniper’s rifle. READ FULL STORY »

What about Indy? The Disney/Lucasfilm deal and the future of 'Indiana Jones'

crystal-skull.jpg

Amid the flurry of Twitterpation over the deal for Disney to buy Lucasfilm and the subsequent plans for a new trio of Star Wars feature films, the fate of another beloved brainchild of George Lucas was lost a bit in the shuffle: Indiana Jones. Adjusted for inflation, the four Indy movies have brought in nearly $1.9 billion at the domestic box office (or $939 million in unadjusted gross). In 2008, after a 19-year absence from the multiplex, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull proved the globetrotting archeologist still had plenty of box office snap left in his whip, pulling in $786.6 million worldwide.

All of which is to say, if Disney is clearly so eager to get the Star Wars engines revving once more, wouldn’t the studio also want to keep Henry “Indiana” Jones, Jr. swinging into theaters? After all, Disney already has two immensely popular Indiana Jones attractions at its theme parks: The Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando. A new Indiana Jones movie should be a no brainer, right?

Skydance and Paramount produced Cruise’s upcoming action thriller Jack Reacher and last year’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.

Sacha Baron Cohen developing 'The Lesbian' for Paramount

Sacha-Baron-Cohen

The Dictator, meet The Lesbian.

Wacky Renaissance man of mockery and comic satire Sacha Baron Cohen and his production company are developing a film tentatively titled The Lesbian for Paramount Pictures, a studio spokesperson confirmed to EW on Thursday.

The film is inspired by the true story of Hong Kong billionaire Cecil Chao’s $65 million offer to any guy who woos and marries his lesbian daughter, Gigi Chao, who eloped with her girlfriend to France. Baron Cohen, set to produce the film, loves a good political parody, having co-wrote and starred in 2006 satirical hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, 2009′s Bruno, about a short shorts-wearing fashionista, and this year’s fictional The Dictator, making fun of despots such as Saddam Hussein.

The Lesbian “is conceived as a potential starring vehicle for Baron Cohen, who will produce through his Four By Two Films banner. A writer has not been attached,” said Paramount in a press release.

While Borat grossed a mega whopping $261 million globally at the box office, The Dictator has taken in less than that worldwide, at $177 million, according to box office tracker BoxOfficeMojo.com.

As Paramount redeploys 'GI Joe 2' to next spring, is summer the only place for tentpoles?

TheRock-GIJoe

Does a studio need at least one big-budget, summer tentpole film to stay competitive?

Conventional Hollywood wisdom says yes, and when Paramount Pictures decided to shift its upcoming sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation from June 29 — mere weeks away — to next March, ostensibly for reshoots and a 3-D retrofit that would draw in higher ticket prices, that left only the distribution of DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 and a Katy Perry concert film to prop up the studio’s summer.

Wall Street and box office analysts say this was an unusual move, but they also agree that abandoning one lucrative season won’t be a problem if they can make it up at a later date. Will it work? Paramount has done it before.

Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Channing Tatum, the sequel just had a splashy showcase at the movie exhibitor confab CinemaCon, and posters for the film have been appearing in movie theaters for weeks (although the film is touted only as “Coming Soon,” with no release date listed).
