New 'Annie' trailer: Quvenzhane Wallis sings, Cameron Diaz sasses -- VIDEO

It’s a hard knock life for Annie in the new official trailer for Will Gluck’s modern-day update of the classic comic and musical.

Beasts of the Southern Wild breakout Quvenzhané Wallis stars as the orphaned heroine who gets rescued from Miss Hannigan’s (Cameron Diaz) care to be used as political bait for Jamie Foxx’s wealthy Benjamin Stacks.

For those fond of John Huston’s 1982 classic, this new take on Annie might be a little bit of a shock. The costumes and sets are bright and over the top, “Tomorrow” sounds ever so slightly Auto-Tuned, and the current pop culture references seem to fly fast and furiously.

MTV Movie Awards: Rebel Wilson talks hosting, and the sketch we didn't see

Changing costumes a half-dozen times, making Zac Efron feel uncomfortable, dancing to “The Climb,” “Lose Yourself,” “Girl on Fire” and “Thrift Shop,” referencing Channing Tatum’s butt every 10 minutes, and just generally keeping the energy high during the 2+ hour broadcast of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards was all in a night’s work for first-time host Rebel Wilson.

The Australian actress soldiered on after the show to take a few minutes to talk to the press backstage about performing with her Pitch Perfect co-stars and how she really feels about Russell Crowe. It’s been a good month for Quvenzhané Wallis! Not only is the actress, now 9, the youngest-ever Best Actress nominee for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild, but EW has learned that she’s in consideration to star in Sony’s upcoming remake of the Broadway musical Annie. A studio rep stresses, though, that newly named director Will Gluck (Easy A) and the producers at Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment banner and Jay-Z’s Marcy Media, which have been developing the project, have yet to make any casting decisions.
