Lea Michele tunes up for 'Les Miserables'

Lea Michele has auditioned for the role of Éponine in director Tom Hooper’s cinematic adaptation of the musical, Les Miserables. The Glee actress, who played Young Cosette on Broadway when she was just 8 years old, would join Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Eddie Redmayne in the production, if she wins the role of the headstrong girl who falls for heroic Marius. The New York Post‘s Page 6 initially reported that Michele, Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, and Evan Rachel Wood had each auditioned, but Wood’s representatives say that the Ides of March actress has not done so. Spokespersons for Swift and Johansson did not respond to requests for comment.

'Evil Dead' remake to be unleashed by Sony Pictures

Those lovely demons from the remake of the cult classic Evil Dead have found a home. Sony Pictures announced today it will distribute the film, in partnership with FilmDistrict and production company Ghost House Pictures.

Director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and actor Bruce Campbell announced in July that they are producing a remake of their 1981 gore-tastic horror film, about a group of teenagers staying in a remote cabin in the woods who accidentally resurrect a horde of demons, thanks to a book of the dead known as the Necronomicon. 'Great Gatsby': Meet Gemma Ward's Catherine -- PHOTO

Another image from Baz Luhrmann’s sure-to-be lavish production of The Great Gatsby has surfaced. The on-set pic shows Gemma Ward (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Strangers) in her role as Catherine, the sister of floozy Myrtle Wilson (Isla Fisher). It’s a relatively minor role, but this dazzling, feathered flapper outfit is pretty major, thanks in no small part to Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning partner Catherine Martin.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton also star in the Gatsby remake, which is currently filming in Australia and is slated to be released Dec. 25, 2012.

Chris Brown, Josh Holloway land on 'Planet B Boy'

Production is underway for Lost alum Josh Holloway and Chris Brown’s upcoming film Planet B Boy.

Based on a documentary of the same, the film follows a crew of American street dancers as they train to compete in France’s Battle of the Year International Championships. Benson Lee, who directed the Planet B-Boy documentary, will also helm its fictional adaptation. The film also stars Laz Alonso, Josh Peck, and Caity Lotz.

No release date has been announced.

Box office report: 'Real Steel' knocks out 'Footloose', wins weekend with $16.3 million

A remake, a prequel, and one woefully misguided bird-watching comedy couldn’t take down Hugh Jackman and the robots of Real Steel at the box office this weekend.

Steel punched up an estimated $16.3 million this weekend, marking a healthy 40 percent drop from its $27.3 million debut. As evidenced by the film’s impressive 64 percent boost on Saturday, it appears that Real Steel is playing as an outright family affair, and that sort of appeal will help it achieve small drops in the coming weeks. Still, the $110 million Dreamworks film, which is being distributed by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, has a very long way to go before it’s in the black. Box office update: 'Footloose' on top with $5.6 million on Friday; 'The Big Year' D.O.A.

Alright, box office, you can perk up any day now. This lull is just getting ridiculous.

Paramount’s Footloose remake danced to the top of of the box office on Friday, with a slightly underwhelming $5.6 million, and it could be headed to first place with a $16 million weekend. Meanwhile, last weekend’s victor Real Steel dropped 45 percent from last Friday, down to $4.5 million,. The Hugh Jackman vehicle should find $14.5 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period.

Universal’s The Thing prequel started its run in third place with $3.2 million, and it will likely earn just $9 million by weekend’s end. The Ides of March and Moneyball filled up the next two spots on the chart with $2.2 million and $1.7 million, respectively. Ides may climb to $6.5 million, and Moneyball could bat up another $5.5 million. The Brad Pitt picture will likely get passed by Dolphin Tale, which also earned $1.7 million on Friday and may swim to a $6 million weekend.

The weekend’s other new wide-release, Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson’s bird-watching comedy The Big Year, couldn’t get off the ground, taking in a wretched $1.2 million, putting it in eighth place. It may earn only $3.5 million.

2. Real Steel – $4.5 mil
3. The Thing  – $3.2 mil
4. The Ides of March – $2.2 mil
5. Moneyball – $1.7 mil

Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger' officially rides again, schedules May 31, 2013 release

Maybe there’ll be a little less silver in those bullets, but The Lone Ranger has cut costs enough for Disney to give the movie the green light. Disney announced today that the film is back on track, and the new release date is May 31, 2013. “Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski are such a talented combination and we’re thrilled to get back to work with them on The Lone Ranger,” a Disney spokesperson said.

The update on the classic cowboy epic was set to star The Social Network’s Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as Indian scout Tonto, but when the budget soared to $250-million-plus, and Universal/DreamWorks’ Cowboys & Aliens underperformed at the box office, studio heads cried “Whoa!” In mid-August, two months before shooting was set to begin, the film faced the possibility of being scrapped completely. 'Princess Bride' remake? 'I hope I'm dead before that happens,' says Mandy Patinkin. But how about a Miracle Max and Valerie movie?

Hollywood executives are notoriously unsentimental when it comes to greenlighting remakes of much-loved movies. Did you cringe in horror at the recent news that remakes of Point Break and Dirty Dancing are in the works? Boo hoo for you. Did you boycott last year’s Karate Kid remake purely on principle? Well, suck on those $359 million worldwide grosses. That said, if anyone ever dreams of remaking director Rob Reiner’s 1987 comic fairy tale The Princess Bride (and it’s hard to imagine the thought hasn’t crossed someone’s mind — after all, there has been talk in recent years of a musical theater version), they’ll have millions of loyal fans of the original wishing for them to be devoured by Rodents of Unusual Size. And it’s not just the fans who would find the very idea inconceivable(!) — cast members from The Princess Bride, who recently came together for the first time in 25 years for EW’s Reunions issue (on stands now), also find the notion appalling. “I hope I’m dead before that happens,” says Mandy Patinkin, who played the swashbuckling Spaniard Inigo Montoya. “I don’t want to have to go through that. Be careful what you even say.”

Spinning off some characters into another movie, though? That’s another question. Billy Crystal tells EW he, for one, thinks that his cantankerous wizard Miracle Max and Max’s not-a-witch wife Valerie (played by Carol Kane) deserve their own movie. “There should be a Max and Valerie movie,” Crystal says. “Start a Twitter thing: ‘We want more Max and Valerie.’ Now we won’t need as much makeup.” Sure, he’s probably joking. Then again, maybe he’s got something there. As spinoff ideas go, to quote Miracle Max, I’ve seen worse.

Rooney Mara eying 'Oldboy' remake

Rooney Mara is threatening to become the belle of violent hard-R cinema.

The striking star of David Fincher’s upcoming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is in talks to join Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy, according to a source close to the production. Twitch Film first reported the news that Mara, who made an enormous impression in just a few scenes as Mark Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend in The Social Network, was considering a leading role in Oldboy.

The 2003 South Korean revenge film, about a man seeking vengeance after 15 years of mysterious confinement, shocked audiences with its gruesome depictions of violence. Mara would play the chef who connects with the newly-free man and helps him seek justice.
