The evil geniuses of Marvel Studios are the masters of building suspense among hardcore fans, often by creating trailers that show a lot of imagery that is, 1) very exciting, and 2) entirely out of context. As we watch, we’re in a constant state of “What exactly is going on here?”
The new trailer for Iron Man 3 is full of such headscratchers, which only help build tension and anticipation for the May 3 opening.

At the end of the first Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. hems and haws his way through the familiar superhero denial about whether he’s the guy who just saved the world, then bluntly decides to admit: “The truth is … I am Iron Man.”
In the new trailer for Iron Man 3, that leaves us wondering, okay — then who is it behind this mask?
I know, I know … a teaser clip for an upcoming trailer. It seems kind of silly.
But for fans of the Marvel movies who’ve been eagerly awaiting the start of their “Phase Two” series of post-Avengers movies, this is kind of like nibbling a little Halloween candy before heading home from trick-or-treating to rip open the whole bag.
The full trailer for Iron Man 3 comes out on Tuesday, but for now … we get the fun-size version.

After being on pause for over a month and a half, Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is back shooting — with no apparent interruption to its planned release next May.
Principal photography was halted Aug. 16 when Robert Downey Jr. hurt himself while performing a minor stunt. Downey’s rep says the injury was to his ankle, and after taking off several weeks to recuperate, he’s now back on his feet.
Filming has resumed in south Florida, where a replica of the Malibu, Calif., seafood restaurant Neptune’s Net was recreated for a sequence in the movie, which has been revealed in some snapshots from onlookers. The actual restaurant is a popular seaside hangout for surfers and bikers, which accounts for all the choppers in this photo of Iron Man and the character believed to be Don Cheadle’s Rhodey, a.k.a. War Machine, sporting red, white, and blue armor similar to the comic book character Iron Patriot.
Or … are we looking at a guest appearance by Chris Evans’ Captain America, trying out some old Iron Man armor with a yankee doodle paint job? (Just a random theory.)

It’s becoming the norm to use two devices at once while consuming entertainment. We watch TV with our phones in hand, ready to tweet our minute-to-minute reactions. Along with the newest Netflix delivery, we keep our laptop handy, set to check IMDb to instantly relieve any nagging feelings of “I know I’ve seen that actress in something before.”
The entertainment industry has taken note: The most buzz-worthy tech to come out of this year’s E3 convention was the Wii U, a videogame console that includes a touchscreen embedded on the controller. There’s even talk of allowing cell phone use in movie theaters. And now, Warner Bros. is inviting viewers at home to use their tablets while watching the DVD for the latest Sherlock Holmes movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
WB’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadowsmovie app syncs with the Blu-ray disc for the film. The Blu-ray/DVD pack hits stores tomorrow, but if you’re eager to watch one of its features before then, you can check out this EW exclusive video, a featurette on Holmes-o-vision with interviews from producers Lionel Wigram and Susan Downey and director Guy Richie.
The first official image released from Iron Man 3 reveals that Tony Stark is just like any other guy who has a lot of unused tech lying around.
But instead of having an old Xbox, a PlayStation 1 and 2, and a bookbag full of old cell phones stashed in his closet, he keeps his old hardware on display, as the full photo shows us in detail. We don’t get a good look at Robert Downey Jr.’s character, who is obscured by a crew member’s clapboard, but we get a solid look at the ego of Iron Man’s alter ego.
Of course, Tony Stark would transform his lair into a mini-museum to himself. But is there a hidden danger hinted at in this photo?
After the credits roll on a movie, it’s always good to sit around with friends and talk about your favorite moments.
When Entertainment Weekly got a conversation going about The Avengers, the friends just happened to be Iron Man, Nick Fury, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk, or at least the stars who played them — who swear a lot more.
