'Don Jon' trailer: Love, porn, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt -- VIDEO

What do you care about most in life? In Don Jon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Martello (Gordon-Levitt) leads a simple existence. He’s got his own hierarchy of needs: “My body, my pad, my ride, my family, my church, my boys, my girls, and my porn.” And it seems to be working out pretty well for Don, until he meets Barbara (Scarlett Johansson) — the bombshell of his dreams with a Jersey accent to match.

The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival under the title Don Jon’s Addiction where EW described it as “an improbably entertaining and kind-hearted comedy about a specimen of New Jersey manhood.” Take a look at the first trailer for the film after the jump. It has a clubby, manic, fast-paced vibe that draws the viewer in, before slowing down and hitting the punchline — that porn may be a deal breaker for the romantic comedy-obsessed Barbara. Tony Danza and Julianne Moore co-star in the comedy, which even features a fake movie-within-the-movie starring Channing Tatum and Anne Hathaway.

• French director Luc Besson, who introduced the world to Natalie Portman in The Professional, has cast Scarlett Johansson as his lead in his newest film, Lucy. In the film, Lucy is forced to be a drug mule. But, when the drug gets into her system, she turns into a super-being with telekinesis abilities, martial arts skills, and the helpful bonus of being immune to pain. Johansson is certainly finding a new life as an action star ever since she took on the role of Natasha Romanoff for the Marvel universe. She also stars in Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut (and festival favorite) Don Jon, which finally hits theaters on October 18. [THR]

• James Franco is continuing his auteur tour, and may sign on to star in Werner Herzog’s (Grizzly Man) Queen of the Desert about Gertrude Bell, the turn of the 20th century British adventurer. Jude Law was attached to star but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The report says that Ridley Scott may also have a Gertrude Bell in the works that Angelina Jolie is interested in. There is no word yet on which actress would play Bell in Herzog’s version. [Deadline]

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, formerly Don Jon’s Addiction, will be in theaters Oct. 18. Gordon-Levitt (who also wrote the film) stars as a modern day Don Juan from New Jersey who is addicted to porn. The film made a splash at Sundance and was quickly scooped up by Relativity Media for $4 million. Gordon-Levitt stated in February that he would probably have to cut out some of the film’s racier scenes to secure an R-rating. Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza also star.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt talks directorial debut 'Don Jon's Addiction' at Sundance: VIDEO

As the star of (500) Days of Summer (and let us not forget 10 Things I Hate About You), Joseph Gordon-Levitt knows something about Hollywood romance — and how to twist it. He stopped by Entertainment Weekly‘s Sundance interview lounge to chat with Anthony Breznican about his feature directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction, a comedy he penned and stars in about a relationship between a man who watches too much porn and a woman (Scarlett Johansson) who watches too many romantic movies. Tony Danza, who plays Gordon-Levitt’s father, also joins the conversation. The film costars Julianne Moore.  READ FULL STORY »

JOBS-FILM

The Sundance Film Festival will give the world its first look at Amanda Seyfried as a porn star in the bio-pic Lovelace and Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs in a chronicle of the Apple entrepreneur’s life in jOBS — just two high-profile projects in a packed Premieres section for the indie showcase.

The festival, which runs from Jan. 17-27 in Park City, Utah, already announced its competition lineup and Midnight Movies last week, but this non-competitive group is typically the place where films with celebrity-filled casts and best-known directors debut.

Other titles in today’s announcement include Before Midnight, the third film in the Richard Linklater-directed Ethan Hawke-July Delpy Before Sunrise and Before Sunset series — as well as new films from Steve Carell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Naomi Watts, Brit Marling, Paul Rudd, and Dakota Fanning. Directors Jane Campion, Park Chan-Wook, and Michael Winterbottom are also bringing their latest projects.

Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes): The Avengers assemble for an EW roundtable -- VIDEO

Avengers_510x317.jpg

After the credits roll on a movie, it’s always good to sit around with friends and talk about your favorite moments.

When Entertainment Weekly got a conversation going about The Avengers last spring, the friends just happened to be Iron Man, Nick Fury, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk, or at least the stars who played them — who swear a lot more.

Miniature versions of the heroes as Hasbro playthings were scattered around the table, but they stayed mostly quiet, unless their buttons were pushed. (The stars were more focused on pushing each other’s buttons.)

The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon says his biggest challenge with the actors was getting them to stop goofing around on set, but now that the film is finished, you can see him here dropping the vice principal act and joining forces with the troublemakers.

Check out our exclusive video with Whedon and his cast below. Their far-ranging discussion included such matters as: Who has the most serious battle scar, who blew the most takes by forgetting lines, and … did Whedon really cry while discussing Black Widow’s origin story?

'Hitchcock' trailer: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, and the making of 'Psycho'

Because the world would not be complete with just one film about the making of an Alfred Hitchcock classic, the upcoming HBO film The Girl (a.k.a., The One About The Birds) has been joined by the Oscar-baiting docudrama Hitchcock (a.k.a., The One About Psycho.) The first trailer for Hitchcock just hit the internet, and, as expected, the film looks to be a showcase for Anthony Hopkins’ Hitchcock impression. But the trailer is arguably stolen by Helen Mirren, playing Hitchcock’s fiercely devoted wife Alma. (Scarlett Johansson also appears as Janet Leigh.)

This is all well and good, but personally, I’m excited for the movie about the making of North by Northwest, which would theoretically star Ray Winstone as Hitchcock, George Clooney as Cary Grant, Michelle Williams as Eva Marie Saint, and Jon Hamm as James Mason. That movie is probably never happening, so watch this trailer and dream: READ FULL STORY »

The 'love story' behind 'Hitchcock' and 'Psycho' -- EXCLUSIVE POSTER

hitchcock.jpg

It might feel creepy to call a movie about the making of Psycho a “love story,” but that’s how Fox Searchlight and director Sacha Gervasi are pushing Hitchcock, which stars Anthony Hopkins as the iconic director and bevy of beauties as his leading ladies. Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh, whose character Marion Crane has a date with the shower; Jessica Biel portrays Vera Miles, the level-headed heroine; and Helen Mirren is Hitch’s wife, Alma, his behind-the-scenes creative partner in every way. But the title of the film is not My Weekend With Janet or Hitchcock in Love. It’s simply Hitchcock, and for good reason. “Hitchcock’s so enigmatic in one sense,” says Gervasi, whose only previous feature was the 2008 documentary Anvil. “Someone who portrays zero emotion. We didn’t really know emotionally that much about Hitchcock, and suddenly you have this whole world that opens up when Anthony Hopkins plays the role. It’s extraordinary. And he really enjoyed tiptoeing up to people who had just arrived on the set and going, ‘Good evening.’ Making people jump. I think he really found the role quite delicious.”

'The Avengers' sequel: Should another female join the superhero squad?

Scarlett-Johansson_320.jpg

Now that it’s officially on, The Avengers sequel will have some Hulk-sized footprints to follow, and Marvel Studios will have to figure out which — if any — of the superheroes from its larger universe should feature in the follow-up.

It’s too soon to say definitively, but if writer-director Joss Whedon remains at the helm, he would like to see Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow get a sister on the squad.

In EW’s exclusive roundtable interview with Whedon and his hero cast, we discussed why there are so few female action heroes in the movies, and why they hope that will change in the next movie. READ FULL STORY »
