Critical Mass: The drug-fueled mayhem of 'Lucy' has a buzz

LUCY-SCARLETT.jpg

Luc Besson loves his lady warriors. Beginning with the original La Femme Nikita, and then in action movies like The Professional, The Fifth Element, and The Messenger, he’s introduced his own brand of memorable action heroines. Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy might be the most hardcore of the bunch. She goes from party girl to super-evolved sorceress when the experimental drug an Asian gangster has smuggled in her body spills into her bloodstream, raising her brain activity to 100 percent capacity. “Lucy is a thinly drawn character, just someone who needs to survive,” writes EW‘s Jeff Labrecque. “But Johansson vividly conveys the initial terror of her dire circumstances before shifting into the calculating, almost robotic mode of an alien being flicking away mere mortals.”

Only one person might be able to help Lucy before she’s fried by the drug’s intellectual fuse. No, not God, but close: Morgan Freeman. The Oscar-winning actor plays the world’s top neuroscientist, and even if Lucy’s mushrooming intelligence dwarfs his own, he at least will be able to help audiences understand just what the heck is going on onscreen.

Black Widow is in mama-bear mode. Mark Ruffalo has his fingers in his ears, trying desperately not to Hulk out as Scarlett Johansson fires a pistol at a robotic menace that is shooting up the bar where they’re hiding. Or, wait a second …

Is that her?

“We only serve real Scarlett here,” deadpans Avengers: Age of Ultron writer-director Joss Whedon. But that’s not exactly true. READ FULL STORY

Behind the Shield: The surreal making of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' -- EXCLUSIVE

They say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. But in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it’s getting harder for the superhero to tell the difference. In the latest installment from Marvel Studios’ interlocked franchise, Chris Evans’ unfrozen genetically-enhanced warrior from the Greatest Generation is still unsure of his place in the world after helping to save it twice: once from the forces of Red Skull in 2011’s original Captain America, and again from an alien invasion in 2012’s The Avengers.

The Winter Soldier features an eponymous new villain — a bioengineered assassin with a mechanical arm—who is targeting the leadership of the global protection force S.H.I.E.L.D. The film, directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo (already being courted by Marvel for more), reteams Evans with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury as top operatives for the group. But Cap (alias Steve Rogers) is beginning to question whether he and S.H.I.E.L.D. are on the same side. Sebastian Stan plays the Winter Soldier, and anyone who saw the first film knows his character’s history with Rogers runs deep. If there’s an overall theme in the movie, it’s this: Old friends make the worst enemies.

EW visited the set of The Winter Soldier last July. It’s the day after Comic-Con ended. Footage screened for fans at the annual convention had lathered the geeky faithful into a frenzy, but no one is celebrating on set. Instead of passing around high fives, the cast members are punching each other in the face. READ FULL STORY

'Winter Soldier' TV teaser: Is this the first superhero-action-romance? -- VIDEO

captain-america-05.jpg

The newest TV teaser for Captain America: The Winter Soldier has a pounding score that evokes the proper amount of action and danger for an Avengers film. But a different version might be just as suited to a romantic ballad, judging by the way the clip underlines the increasingly warm and fuzzy relationship between Cap (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Plenty of heartfelt gazes. Plenty of teamwork building. Plenty of courageous tit-for-tat heroics.

The Winter Soldier unofficially kicks off the summer blockbuster season next week, opening in the U.S. on April 4. It’s already off to a rousing start abroad, bringing in $75.2 million during its opening weekend in 32 foreign territories.

'Lucy' First Look: Scarlett Johansson learns better fighting through chemistry in Luc Besson's latest

bit of salt, and Lucy definitely can get salty.” Keep your eyes peeled for the trailer, which is scheduled to hit iTunes on April 2.
