Stephenie Meyer's 'The Host': We were on the set!

the-host

Last week, EW made a special sneak peek visit to the set of The Host, the big screen adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling sci-fi novel. This is our first of several reports.

An hour outside of Albuquerque, N.M., on the rocky edge of a small, picturesque canyon, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) is squinting into the sun. She’s flanked by two sleek, silver sports cars, and her eyes are ringed with an eerie, iridescent circle. They’re both signs that Kruger is playing The Seeker — a dogged member of the police force of an alien species called Souls, who have successfully invaded our planet by literally invading our bodies. She’s looking for Wanderer (Hanna‘s Saoirse Ronan, pictured with costar Max Irons), a member of her race who, aptly, has wandered off into the desert after the consciousness of her human host, Melanie, cajoled Wanderer into finding what’s left of Melanie’s human family. The Seeker is also keenly set on finding this rag-tag cluster of the remains of humanity, but for very different reasons. “We find her,” Kruger (as The Seeker) mutters to herself, “we find the threat.”  READ FULL STORY »

Guy Pearce rolls with the punches in the first five minutes of 'Lockout' -- VIDEO

If you thought the first five minutes of Haywire offered a lot of talk and not much action, well, you’re a maniac, and boy do we have the movie for you. Feast your eyes on Lockout. The first five face-punching, chopper chasing minutes of Guy Pearce’s latest movie — which should have been called Prison Break Galactica — have been released online.

Molting his indie feathers after Memento, The King’s Speech, and Mildred Pierce, Pearce is blowing smoke rings around his pursuers and positioning himself as a legit action star. Maggie Grace (not seen in the clip) is the young woman Pearce’s Snow must rescue from a space prison (oh yes, a space prison) to clear his name. The clip gives us a glimpse of Pearce’s baddie counterpart, and who better to play him than Prison Break alum and scene-chewing über-thug Peter Stormare? Check it out below. READ FULL STORY »

'Total Recall' trailer: Kate Beckinsale vs. Jessica Biel...TO THE DEATH!!!

The full trailer for this August’s vaguely anticipated Total Recall remake hit the Internet yesterday. The plot outline remains roughly the same as the outlandish 1990 classic: An everyman feels dissatisfied with his perfect life and is haunted by dreams of a more exciting existence, so he visits his friendly neighborhood memory implant service. Tonally, though, this new Recall suggests a futuristic Bourne, with Colin Farrell suddenly discovering a remarkable array of secret-agent Krav Maga skills. Also, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel get into a fight, and every time they punch each other, it sounds like a metal fist punching a mushroom cloud. Also, John Cho and Bryan Cranston both wear wigs. Curiously, there is still no sign of the three-breasted mutant prostitute. READ FULL STORY »

'Total Recall' trailer teaser: Flying cars and angry Beckinsale

Colin-Farell

This Sunday, the trailer for the upcoming Total Recall remake will hit Apple Trailers. In anticipation of that blessed event, which has now ruined your plans for the weekend, Columbia has released a 30-second teaser for the trailer. First impressions: It looks like a less candy-colored Fifth Element, Kate Beckinsale looks angry, and in just 30 seconds the teaser fits in over a dozen Inception foghorn sounds, which is surely a new record. Wouldn’t it be great if someone made a whole movie where the soundtrack was just Inception foghorns?

Alas, for fans of the original, nowhere in these 30 seconds is there a sighting of the long-promised three-breasted mutant prostitute, but we’ll keep hoping that the movie finds room for the three-breasted mutant prostitute, mostly because it gives us the chance to write the words “three-breasted mutant prostitute,” which is a phrase we never get to use when we write about The Hunger Games. Watch the trailer teaser: READ FULL STORY »

'Piranha 3DD' trailer fulfills promises on all, uh, fronts -- NSFW RED BAND TRAILER

PIRHANA-3DD

Say what you like about the folks behind forthcoming horror sequel Piranha 3DD but at least they’re not trying to disguise their objectification of the female form as some arty fashion shoot or armless statue (that’s right, Venus de Milo, we’re talking about you). Warning: Not surprisingly, the trailer is definitely NSFW.

'Prometheus': Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof on new viral promo selling Michael Fassbender -- VIDEO

FIRST-LOOK-PROMETHEUS

It’s been fascinating watching the advertising campaign unfold for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. On the one hand, the film’s trailers have been presaged by a breathless pre-release campaign — advertising for advertising, the definition of a hard sell.

On the other hand, Fox has also undertaken a viral campaign for Weyland Industries, the mega-corporation behind the film’s exploration to discover the roots of humanity, that barely acknowledges its connection to the movie at all. The first volley in this campaign features Guy Pearce as company head Peter Weyland, giving a TED talk in 2023 about advances in artificial intelligence. The second is just starting to trickle out into the Internet, an advertisement for Weyland Corporation’s latest creation: David, a completely lifelike android who just happens to look like actor Michael Fassbender — who plays an android called David in Prometheus. Check out what looks like a sneak peek at the viral ad below:  READ FULL STORY »

WonderCon: In 'Looper,' Joseph Gordon-Levitt transforms into a young Bruce Willis -- FIRST LOOK

“What would you do if you were sitting across the table from your older self? Or your younger self?” That’s the central question of Looper, as posed by writer-director Rian Johnson (Brick) before he unveiled the very first look at his sci-fi head squeezer for attendees of this year’s WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. Out Sept. 28, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a hitman who specializes in a unique method of execution: His victims are sent back to him from 30 years in the future, to be dispatched within seconds of popping into the past. The job pays handsomely, and life is dandy for him, until one day his victim turns out to be his future self (Bruce Willis).

The premise meant that Gordon-Levitt took on what he called “the most transformative” role of his career, undergoing three hours of make-up a day to modify his face — especially his lips, nose, and eye-color — to look like a younger Willis. READ FULL STORY »

The brand new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus officially debuted today in Anaheim, Calif. at WonderCon, the fan convention little sister of Comic-Con. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof hosted the panel that featured Scott, and Prometheus costars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, and before screening the trailer, they promised the two-and-a-half-minute clip would help resolve many pressing questions fans have about the film.

The trailer does indeed illuminate a bit more of the film’s storyline. Check it out below:  READ FULL STORY »

'Prometheus': Teaser for the new trailer hypes 'the most anticipated movie of the year' -- VIDEO

Much like the run up to its first trailer in December, the upcoming second trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus has its own 20-second teaser. It features a few new blink-and-you’ll-miss-them glimpses of the film, primarily of the vast-foreboding-alien-planet-landscape variety. Everything about the teaser for the new trailer effectively, well, teases me to want to see the full new trailer, but the claim that Prometheus is “the most anticipated movie of the year” doesn’t quite stand up to scrutiny. I’m fairly certain The AvengersThe Dark Knight Rises, and The Hobbit have all staked claims to that title too, and, besides, if Scott’s quasi-prequel to Alien really is so eagerly awaited, do we really need to hype it so much?

All that said, of course you’re going to check it out below. So have at it:  READ FULL STORY »
