Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Super 8, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 may have been skunked when it came time to hand out Academy Awards, but they cleaned up but good at the Saturn Awards, which honor the best in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. At a ceremony Thursday night in Burbank, Calif., Rise of the Planet of the Apes won Best Science Fiction Film, as well as Best Supporting Actor (for Andy Serkis’ motion capture performance as the sentient ape Caesar), and Best Visual Effects. Super 8‘s director (J.J. Abrams), composer (Michael Giacchino), and young star (Joel Courtney) all earned Saturn trophies. And the final Harry Potter film took home the Best Fantasy Film Award.
In the television category, Fringe won best network TV show, Breaking Bad best syndicated or cable TV show, and The Walking Dead best TV presentation (a category for anything lasting 10 episodes or less). Director and actor Frank Oz, and actor James Remar both won Life Career Awards; writer-director Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) won the Filmmakers Showcase Award; and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman won the first ever Innovator Award. The first full trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, the clip that showed an entire football field collapsing, was named Best in Show at the 13th annual Golden Trailer Awards. The preview for Christopher Nolan’s superhero epic was also named Best Summer 2012 Blockbuster at last night’s awards celebration in Los Angeles. In case you decided against seeing David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in theaters because its bruise-black Scandinavian nihilism wasn’t quite the holiday pick-me-up you were looking for, the good news is it finally comes out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow. But even if you have seen Daniel Craig inhabit the role of disgraced investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara’s harrowing, Oscar-nominated turn as the pierced cyber-sleuth Lisbeth Salander, you might want to check it out again on Blu-ray — if for no other reason than to take a deep dive in the disc’s four hours of extras.

The winners of the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards were announced last night. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Oscar-nominated W.E. took home the big awards for film. TV honors went to Glee, Boardwalk Empire, and Downton Abbey. Swiffer’s “Country Dirt Cowgirl” took home the sole commercial prize.
Four honorary awards were also presented to Kate Beckinsale, costume designer Marlene Stewart (Real Steel, Tropic Thunder), Glee designer Lou Eyrich, and longtime collaborators Deborah Hooper and Clint Eastwood. Jane Lynch hosted the event. Glee creator Ryan Murphy, actor Columbus Short, Marcia Gay Harden, Ken Watanabe, and supermodel-turned-Revenge star Amber Valletta were on hand to present a few of the night’s awards. David Fincher is known for regularly delivering thought-provoking, stylish films that often stay with you for weeks, but the director is not given enough credit for his artistic touch on the opening credits for his films, which often play out like moody short films in and of themselves. Couldn’t sleep for a while thanks the chilling ending of Se7en? Those creepy, foreshadowing opening credits probably didn’t help you get a wink either. The manic opening for Fight Club set the stage for the cult favorite, while Zodiac‘s haunting puzzler made viewers inevitably go back for a second (or third… or fourth) look. And, this year, the Oscar-nominated adaptation The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo boasted an opening to join the pantheon of great Fincher credits.
EW spoke with Tim Miller, the Creative Director of Blur, the design studio responsible for those dark and thrilling Dragon Tattoo opening credits, on how Fincher approached him for the project, how the two-and-a-half-minute sequence was made, and why moviegoers have reacted to the sequence the way they have.

For this year’s Oscars, the 20 acting nominees have posed for photographer Douglas Kirkland in what the Academy calls “Out of Character: Portraits of This Year’s Acting Nominees.” Clicking through them, two things quickly become clear: One, with rare exception, the men weren’t too keen on being creative with their poses. And two, with rare exception, the women were keen on doing anything but a straight-forward pose.

The Directors Guild of America announced its annual awards tonight at a ceremony in the Grand Ballroom above the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The Artist‘s Michel Hazanavicius took home the prize for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film. Fellow nominees Martin Scorsese (Hugo) and Alexander Payne (The Descendants) also spoke at the event while accepting their nomination medallions. As is his custom for awards events, nominee Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) was not present; nominee David Fincher (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) had to fly to the premiere of his film in Tokyo, Japan, although he did attend the nominee breakfast Saturday morning.
Hosted by Kelsey Grammer, the evening also feted directors for feature documentaries, and TV dramas, comedies, reality shows, made-for-TV movies and miniseries, soap operas, children’s programming, and commercials.
Since 1948, the DGA Award winner for feature film has gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Director every year save for six exceptions, most recently when Rob Marshall took home the DGA Award for Chicago in 2002, while Roman Polanski won the Oscar for The Pianist.

A few weeks ago, the holiday movie season — or, at least, the conventional wisdom on it — went a little nutty. The media decreed the following things: that Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with a $39.6 million opening weekend gross, was a disappointment; that Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, with a $23 million opening-weekend gross, was also a disappointment; and that The Descendants (closing in on $30 million) was underperforming. These weren’t opinions — they were incontrovertible movie-industry facts, delivered with the requisite tut-tutting of sky-is-falling doom. As for the awards season, that had all been sorted out, thank you, even though most of the relevant films had barely even begun to be seen by audiences. The Artist, mopping up critics’ awards, had Harvey Weinstein behind it, going into full-court-press Oscar mode, so of course it was foregone that that was going to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Best Actor looked like a runoff between George Clooney and The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin. And The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? Sorry, not even in the running. Not an “awards film.” (Too violent! The 2012 box office got off to a fine start this weekend, as Paramount’s “found footage” (riiiight…) horror movie The Devil Inside, which the studio acquired for just under $1 million, earned a tremendous $34.5 million in its first three days, becoming the first breakout box office star since The Lion King 3D. In fact, the strong debut marks the third-best January opening of all time behind Cloverfield ($40.1 million) and a re-release of Star Wars ($35.9 million). Is this a sign of things to come in 2012?
