New York Film Critics Circle: The real winners

Penelopecruz_l
Last night I was lucky enough to attend the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner, presided over by my ever-so-graceful EW colleague (and NYFCC chairperson) Lisa Schwarzbaum. Since the NYFCC’s winners were announced last month, I thought I’d give out a few of my own awards based on last night’s glamorous event.

Best Comedy Duo Milk costars Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. After Penn presented Brolin with his Best Supporting Actor prize, Brolin said, “Quite an actor, Sean Penn. And not an a–hole, like Russell Crowe.”

Most Adorable Rookie Best Actress winner Sally Hawkins. The Happy-Go-Lucky star was as radiant as her on-screen alter ego, grinning from ear to ear throughout the whole event. I hope she never grows jaded.

Best Presenter Tony Kushner. The Angels in America playwright proved why he’s got a Pulitzer Prize, writing and delivering a short, incisive love letter to Best Picture winner Milk, unlike several other presenters (and they should know who they are), who used their time at the podium to talk mostly about themselves.

Most Helpful Daughter Jenny Lumet. While her father, acclaimed director Sidney Lumet, was introducing her Best Screenplay prize for Rachel Getting Married, the first-time screenwriter yelled at him from her table to adjust the microphone he was using so he could be heard better. Maybe she should direct too.

Best Acceptance Speech Penelope Cruz. The Best Supporting Actress winner told a hysterical story about how her Vicky Cristina Barcelona kissing scene with Scarlett Johansson was delayed a few hours so Woody Allen could rush to the dermatologist to have a spot on his hand examined. Let’s hope she gets to tell the tale at a televised awards show sometime soon.

As Penelope has told that same story at almost every press junket/opportunity, were people really laughing, or just feigning? Don’t get me wrong, she was great in the movie, and it is a funny story. But how many times does it have to be repeated?

I’d like inform you that Scarlett Johansson (actress)actually is a clone from original person, who has nothing with acting career.Clone was created illegally using stolen biomaterial.Original Scarlett Galabekian last name is nice, CHRISTIAN young lady.I’ll tell more, those clones(it’s not only 1)made in GERMANY-world leader manufacturer of humans clones,it’s in Ludwigshafen am Rhein,Rhineland-Palatinate,Mr.Helmut Kohl home town. You can’t even imaging the scale of the cloning activity. But warning,H.Kohl staff strictly controlling their clones spreading around the world, they’re NAZI type disciplined and mind controlled,be careful get close with clones you will be controlled too.Original family didn’t authorize any activity with stolen biomaterials,no matter what form it was created in,it’s all need to be back to original family control in Cedars-Sinai MedicalCenter in LA.Controlling clones is US military operation.Original Scarlett never was engaged,by the way

Haha, I’ve noticed in his interviews that Josh Brolin comes off as refreshingly unrehearsed and unPC; he’s not spouting the same stock drivel as his peers. However, if this were a woman we were talking about, the media would be falling over itself attempting to paint her as “difficult,” “rude,” or someone who needs a foot in her mouth, as their treatment of Katherine Heigl has demonstrated.

I think theres a difference between Josh Brolin and Katherine Heigl, Ashley. Whereas Josh is refreshing and honest and comes off that way. Katherine (even in interviews) just comes off as greedy and conceited.

I like very much Josh Brolin (he’s one of our great artists), but I think Viggo Mortensen deserves the oscar to best supporting actor for Appaloosa. He was sansacional!. Penelope Cruz!. Oh my God!. She is desagreeble!.

Well said Ashley. Zach I have to disagree completely. Heigl always is 100% genuine and is at pains to say how grateful she is for her success. She must have said it about 100 times regarding Knocked Up for example, yet people ripped her apart for a comment about the movie being sexist. They called her ungrateful. A comment she actually said but also qualified at the time (not after) by saying she realised the characters had to be exaggerated to highlight the comedic aspects and women would hopefully realise this. This was in a response to a question asking her about the portrayal of women in the movie. She did nothing wrong at all. She always comes across as charming and extremely grateful for her success in every interview I have seen. However, she also has the guts to stand up for herself and not be bullied. These are qualities people should admire not criticize. If Josh Brolin does the same then good for him. Personally I am tired of hearing the same everthing was wonderful comments
