Over the last 10 days I’ve heard a lot of people, in the Academy and otherwise, bad-mouthing Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway for their emotional Read the full post.

The fact that you had to write this article — never mind that “a lot of” people are talking about it, means the entertainment community has now got its head so far up its own a*s that is is now withholding awards based on perceptions of reactions to other awards. DAVE, if someone brings up this topic the proper response is, “Shut up and watch a movie.”
Ask Eddie Murphy and Burt Reynolds if speeches for earlier awards affect Oscar chances.

The Oscars are all politics so these speeches could very well have an effect – although they shouldn’t.
Having said that, anything Anne Hathaway can do to hurt her chances, I’m behind it 100%. I can’t stand her and her holier than thou BS. I hope she doesn’t get nominated and cries into one of her cigarettes she started smoking just to be cool.

Well if we’re on the topic of speeches effecting future voting… how does Rourke not get mentioned in this article at all?? He looked like he just rolled out of bed, mumbled incoherently, and exchanged not-so-classy remarks with his director, which lead to a middle finger. Not something the Academy is hoping for at their award show…
So Dave, you know what’s in the brains of “Academy voters” why? Because you overhead Gena Lee Nolin or some other C-list actress saying it at the Ivy? Where’s your evidence? Your concealing your own opinions as fact and it makes you look bad as a journalist….When you say “But it came off condescending to all the other actresses in the room, particularly her category-mates like Angelina Jolie and Melissa Leo.”…so that must mean that you spoke to Jolie and Leo and got their opinion, right? Otherwise, how do you know they took it that way? This article is the most ridiculous name-dropping-look-at-me-I’ve-got-connections-to-inside-Hollywood piece of crap I’ve ever read. You have no evidence to back up your claims about knowing what’s in the minds of people. Name names, Dave, or your article doesn’t mean squat.
This just proves the awards are not based on the person’s performance in a movie. It’s high school all over again.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Are Academy voters still in high school? They’re not voting for Most Popular, they’re voting for Best Actress. Keep it about the performances.
This is foolish! We need to stop hating on Kate and Anne and refocus our energy towards their tremendous performances. It sounds like people are contradicting themselves- they complain we don’t have any classic actors like we did in early Hollywood (’40′s- ’60′s), yet their mocking the closest people we’ve got! Appalling…
You have to be kidding. As if enough politicking doesn’t go into Oscar winners, you are asking seriously if a SPEECH at an awards show should also play a part? That’s absurd. Meanwhile, I don’t give a hoot about Anne Hathaway, but Kate Winslet has earned an Oscar. Who cares about the rest of it.
It should ALWAYS be based on performance!
Forest Whitaker won so many awards for The Last King of Scotland before he won at the Oscars. Apparently he would ramble on and not make very good speeches. But lo and behold by Oscar night he was fluent. Should he have not won for giving so-so speeches before Oscar night? I don’t think so. Typical media trying to stir up a story. This magazine has gone so far downhill, it is not even funny. So after 17 years, I will not renew my subscription!
Sorry, but I’m just still shocked that OTHER PEOPLE on this board are shocked that the Oscars are NOT 100% based on performance.
I agree, it should be about someone’s performance, not their speech. BUT, I must say Kate Winslett’s speech was HORIFYINGLY bad. I mean, career-hurting kind of bad. She accidentally insulted Angelina Jolie, couldn’t think of whom to thank, and generally rambled incoherently for long periods of time. I think anyone who didn’t really know her until then would get the impression that she is a flake. And she’s not. It was hard for me to watch, as someone who thinks she is a goddess. I mean, it has to be an example of the worst possible way to give a speech at an awards show, honestly.
