Sundance: 'Black Dynamite' purchased by Sony Pictures

In Sundance’s first over-night deal-making session, Sony Pictures has purchased the North American rights to the blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite from director Scott Sanders (Thick as Thieves). It was first reported in Variety.

The deal, which closed at 6 a.m. Monday morning, includes a large marketing commitment for a release later this year. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group, who earlier this week purchased the video rights to Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest, sees franchise potential in this film starring Michael Jai White (Why Did I Get Married). Actually, I think IndieWire had it first, not Variety.
