Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to play Freddy Krueger in New Line’s forthcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, EW has learned. The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his role as a sex offender in 2006′s Little Children, will take on the part famously originated by Robert Englund when cameras roll on the franchise’s ninth film, titled A Nightmare on Elm Street, on May 5 in Chicago.

I’m not for remakes at all, but Jackie Earle Haley is absolutely PERFECT for that role…
That sounds like something people should take offense for but I swear it’s a compliment.
The only purely watchable part of “the Watchmen”. I give my approval whole heartedly.
My question is why can’t Robert Englund play Freddy? He should stil be able to play the role, he is not that old. And besides….he is Freddy. I think Jackie would be good, but why change?
Are there no more original ideas in Hollywood? All these horror remake/reboots are driving me insane. There is nothing wrong with the originals. Now N.O.E.S. Also saw a Hellraiser remake is on the way. I swear if they remake Rosemary’s Baby or The Exorcist I will scream bloody murder in the streets.
I think this is great casting but I really don’t think this needs to be done. A Hellraiser remake, however, is DEFINITELY needed… the original is cheese-tastic.

The original is such a classic. I agree Jackie Earle Haley would be a great Freddy, but is this gonna be a frame by frame remake or just a retelling like Rob Zombie’s Halloween?
Not sure it’s a great move for Mr. Hailey.. it’s not exactly a role that adds credibility to an actor’s resume, and he’s at a point where he’s starting to be taken seriously.

It’s a big role, and will show what he’s really made of.
I think he’ll be good. But I’m still not thrilled they’re remaking NOES. And to the person who suggested a HELLRAISER remake, SHAME ON YOU.

Robert Englund has stated that he is too old to play Freddy anymore, but he would be interested in a cameo… it was in an interview.
