'Transformers 2' racks up record $16 million in Wednesday midnight shows

Tags:

Paramount was looking for bigger with Michael Bay’s highly anticipated Transformers sequel and it looks like they’ve got it. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen debuted to a record $16 million last night, the most ever for a Wednesday midnight run. (Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight scored $18 million for its midnight run last year, but that was on a Friday.)

So how high will Transformers 2‘s grosses go this weekend? Predictions have ranged anywhere from $125 million to $160 million for the five-day frame. Whatever the number, it will be good news for the box office, which is having trouble maintaining last summer’s record draw. Check back here tomorrow for more detailed predictions in the Box Office Preview.

Congratulations America. You have made a misogynistic, racist, retarded movie a big hit. Thank you for allowing Hollywood to know that people don’t want 3-dimensional characters, a coherent plot or quality editing. We want robot testicles, humping robots and a robot Amos and Andy. Bravo.

Love the movie and Megan. She is so hot: http://www.actressscene.com/search/label/Megan%20Fox

The comment (“…America. You have made a misogynistic, racist, retarded…”) is in itself offensive and everything it claims to hate. Why do haters feel they must bother the rest of us with their garbage? Can’t we just get along?

  • Alex

Ah, “Q”, you are sooo much better than the rest of us. I don’t know how we survive without your wisdom.
Anyway! Dude, lighten up, will you? it’s just a movie. It’s entertainment. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be plenty of pretentious, self-important, boring movies released around Oscar time. In the meantime,if you don’t want to see the movie, don’t. That just means there will be more seats for those of us that still like to have fun at the movies.

    @Hawaii Muskrat
    I don’t follow.
How is my criticism, in and of itself, also misogynistic, racist and retarded? I am pretty sure you have complained about some movie in the past.

Bay turned heroic transformers into a human and robot sex movie. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him and tricking people to watch a transformers movie.

  • Dave

Hey Q & Dumb please stfu. You know everyone is going to see it. so please stop. your acting like f-ing robots are real actors. Please why dont’t you sit them in your basement/bedroom and interview them. NERDS ahhhh

  • lolwut

Congratulations Q, you have made having thin skin and a penchant for being constantly offended a way of life. Thank you for letting the world know that we don’t want to enjoy things for what they are without someone policing them because somewhere, someone has their underwear in a bunch. We want turtlenecks, mocha’s and subtitled indie flicks.

way to go Q! Don’t expect too much from America…

  • K

this movie was exactly what i was expecting. Fun to watch, sure it wasn’t best movie material but it’s the middle of the summer and i just wanna have some fun at the movies…

  • ajc

Yes, the movie is big and dumb. But I don’t hate America for going to see it. The Hangover, Up, and Star Trek are giant hits not because of marketing or gimmicks, but because of strong story and characters. So, the success of those films more than make up for the success of Transformers, oh, and Paul Blart.

16 MILLION DOLLARS- OMG!!! For a movie that opened at midnight on a Wednesday in the middle of a non-holiday week. Nicole, you’re looking at a movie that is going to take in excess of 200 Million. Remember there were close to 300 sold out midnight showings across the country last night. And as of today close to 700 sold out shows for the weekend. It will be the number one movie of the year by the end of the weekend. And who knows how big it’s holiday totals are going to be for the fourth of July weekend. I’m Stunned! My question for EW is knowing that the 1st Transformers film did over 700 million worldwide, do you guys think this one will do a billion dollars?

  • ajc

I personally don’t think this film will do the billion dollar thing, mainly due to poor word of mouth. The word of mouth for the first one was much better, and then it had legs. I see this one dropping like a stone. It could pull in $100 million for the weekend, and $160 million for its five days, but it will drop. It will make over $300 million domestic, but not much. We’re not talking Titanic or Dark Knight here. By August, it will be nearly gone from theaters.

  • Lynn

I enjoyed the movie for what it was (dumb, mindless fun), but the word of mouth isn’t that great on it. It’ll make a killing this opening weekend and then drop pretty sharply. Most people I’ve talked to who’ve seen it were underwhelmed, and some even said it was boring. I went in with low expectations, so I wasn’t disappointed.

  • Brianna

I saw the movie at midnight and I thought it was spectacular! The people who reviewed it must not have been paying attention because it was awesome. The best movie I’ve seen so far this year, and it will probably stay that way with Harry Potter 6 and New Moon close behind.
