I met with a jet-lagged Colin Firth yesterday in Toronto, fresh from his Best Actor victory at the Venice film festival for his impeccable lead performance in Tom Ford’s A Single Man. In the drama, Firth, best known for his roles in Pride & Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary, plays a college professor, mourning the loss of his partner, who considers ending his own life. At the InStyle/Hollywood Foreign Press Association party tonight in Toronto, Harvey Weinstein told me he intends to release the film on Dec. 4; in the meantime, here’s Firth talking about his career-best performance.
More Toronto Coverage:

I can’t wait for this film to come out. I love Colin Firth and the clips I’ve seen of this are fantastic:)
Colin Firth has been working hard and I have admired him for so many years. He is extremely talented and I really hope he gets some recognition.
Love Colin Firth. Congrats to him on this amazing project! Looking forward to hearing his name come Oscar time!
this is the best piece of oscar news so far this year. i hope he goes on to get nominated. that man accepting an oscar would be utter magic. can’t wait to see the film, hooray for colin!
About time! I’ve always felt that Colin was underrated. This is the best news I’ve heard in a very long time. Bring on the Oscars.
I tried to hard to see him while he was here in Toronto but alas he was well hidden:
such a talented man
There is something about Colin Firth that just makes him one of the sexiest men today…it isn’t obvious, he doesn’t work at it, he isn’t traditionally a gorgeous man but when he gives that special smile he has your heart just melts watching him. I loved him in Bridget Jones Diary and everything I have seen him in since.
i thought it was just me. he made me swoon in “bridget jones’ diary.”
he’s incredibly sexy. I thought he couldn’t get any hotter than in P&P, but then I saw Girl with a Pearl Earring, and he’s just magnificent in it! I think he would be a great in the remake of My Fair Lady that they are supposedly making with Keira Knightley. He’s charming and witty, but in a very reserved, almost arrogant way.
Oh, yes, yes! Colin Firth as Prof. Higgins in a remake of My Fair Lady? What a splendid idea! He’d be excellent, no doubt about it.
such an intelligent, articulate actor – one of the absolute best out there – can’t wait to see the movie!
Oh, Colin Firth … I’m so happy for his success, and hope that there’s more in store for him.
I was hooked on Colin Firth from the first time I laid eyes on him in the A&E version Pride & Prejudice. He’s good stuff!
What!! Why haven’t I heard about this? Dammit I’ve missed him and cannot wait for this movie to come out. Congrats for an acting award long overdue.
It’s about time! You can always count on him for a brilliant performance in every imaginable role–Nanny McPhee’s employer and a Roman warrior. What a man!
Colin deserves all the accolades and is an amazing man. I could look and listen to him 24/7.
The thing about this year, however, is that a lot of the best films are not star-driven, meaning the best actor races and best picture race will not overlap very much. (Also, I’m still hoping for District 9)
I saw this film – twice – in Toronto and it is an absolute masterpiece. I can’t stop thinking about Colin Firth’s performance – it is without doubt the best of his career.
