I confess, looking back, that I have no great generalizations to make about the movies that came along this decade. Read the full post.

30. A History of Violence
Notice Slumdog millionaire did not make the list… that particular movie was way overrated in my opinion!
Alexander Payne’s Election is my favorite film of the decade. Far more superior than Sideways. The characters still haunt me today. Look at how Glee took inspiration from it.
I did a Top 30 list for the decade. I won’t post it here. But I will put a link if anyone would like to take a look at it.

Gday there. very interesting post. I did a similar one myself at AMO if you care to take a look and let me know what you think. I definitely had some of the ones you mentioned in my top 50, but cutting it down to 2o was very difficult.

Where’s Brokeback Mountain???
How do you skip Cold Mountain in your top 10?
1. There Will Be Blood
2. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy
3. Brokeback Mountain
4. A History of Violence
5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
6. You Can Count On Me
7. Pan’s Labyrinth
8. Gladiator
9. Star Trek
10. Knocked Up
I’m surprised by all the top-ten love for The Dark Knight. It was NOT a great movie. It tried to do too much, couldn’t handle it all, and ended up sloppy. It had unnecessary scenes and accidental loose ends. It should have set up a bigger story for Two-Face, instead of trying to squish it in.
One of the best movies of the decade that never got enough attention was The New World.
The problem with most of the “art” films listed by so many of you – I wouldn’t watch them a second time. For example: The Departed – fantastic film, but I wouldn’t give it another gander (did I really just use the word gander – I’m turning into my grandmother). On the other hand, you have the entertaining and artistic films like Casino Royale and LOTR that people watch over and over. I can’t even begin to count the number of times my brother has watched LOTR. To list the top 10 movies of the decade I believe a rewatchability has to be included. There’s no way I could narrow it down to 10 because there were several movies I enjoyed in the last 10 years, but I do know that the very top of my list would be WALL-E which deserves all the acclaim that can be heaped on it.

Mr. Gleiberman: I was reading your review of Alice in Wonderland and had thought”well, maybe it wouldn’t be a good movie”. And then I saw your pick of best movies for this century and realized that you have no idea what a good movie is. Your choices of movies are disturbing to me at best and it tells me that you are completely out of touch as to what the American family would consider good movie entertainment. I will never read your reviews nor would I even presume them to be correctly screened. You might consider a job cleaning toilet for you are not a movie critic unless you only think your job is to be “critical”.
This guy gave Book of Eli a “D” A movie with one of the most true storylines of religious history, and a good movie to watch. He’s uneducated. Casino Royal? The 20th remake bond movie????? please
