'Avatar' sweeps Visual Effects Society Awards

Avatar was predictably the big winner at last night’s Visual Effects Society Awards, taking home six trophies out of the seven categories in which it was nominated (its only loss came to District 9, in the Outstanding Compositing category). Avatar‘s Neytiri was named Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Film, while “Neytiri Drinking” won the award for Best Single Visual Effect of the year. Up, meanwhile, swept all three animated-film prizes, while Sherlock Holmes was the winner for Best Supporting Visual Effects, the award given to films with a smaller amount of bells and whistles. If there’s one Oscar Avatar is most likely to win this Sunday night, it’s clearly for Best Visual Effects.

Best single visual effect of the year, huh? I still can’t get the image of California falling away into the sea out of my mind (2012).
Christopher (District 9) was also maybe a more interesting character to me than Neytiri, but for the most part, I can’t really complain about Avatar winning what it should- visuals.

I also might have thrown some love to Dr. Manhattan (Watchmen), who’s incredible amount of detail (down to the glowing veins in his skin) was better realized than anything I could have hoped for from that graphic novel

i was too busy staring at the glowing veins of his… um…

        Ewww

I don’t believe they have a Best Digital Penis award.

      • Krispy

It’s not the size of the digital penis, it’s how you pixilate it.

I may need to see this movie….

      • Umair

HAHAHAHA this all made me laugh out loud :D

  • Celia

In what scene does she drink? I don’t remember that.
But Dr. Manhattan’s blue balls were fascinating.

    • Levi

      either do i

I’m thinking it’s the scene where she drinks water (or some kind of liquid) that had collected in the leaf. It’s when they’re in the jungle running around and she’s showing Jake how to hunt and track.

Who drinks what?? I saw the movie and don’t even know what they’re talking about…

  • Celia

I’m thinking there may have been scene in which she drinks water off a leaf, but I’m not 100% sure that was Avatar because that scene has appeared in a gajillion different movies.

  • Umair

The bit where she lowers a cup-like leaf from a plant so she can drink the water inside. Lol i dont get why that was the best…

    • Hannah

Probably because showing a realistic portrayal of drinking involves a lot of minute muscle movements in the jaw and throat. The attention to detail had to have been staggering for it to look “real.”

  • Karen Clark

When are you going to give us the list of your Oscar picks? Or did I miss them?

  • Kelsey

The drinking scene they’re talking about is when she drinks from the leaf in the jungle.
And I could be wrong, but would Christopher from District 9 even count as an animated character, seeing as I’m pretty sure he was created using puppetry/animatronics? I can definitely see how District 9 won compositing, though.

    thanks men

Not surprised this “Neytiri Drinking From Plant scene” was chosen.

Interesting category… is all about technological achievement or strong composition as well?

The scene is brilliant on both counts: Difficult water effects & droplets & gravity, musculature of the face and throat when drinking and again when emotive expression of joy. The composition is really impressive due to the virtual camera swooping directly overhead and back alongside again. The effect of the shot to portray various motifs: Knowledge of plant life and survival skills and simple pleasures of necessities as part of the training and slow pausing to appreciate all this… Well deserved!!! The artistry and quality of the work is so high.
