Box office preview: Will 'Alice' crush Robert Pattinson?

alice-in-wonderlandAudiences may have already given Alice in Wonderland over $116 million of their cold, hard cash but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to spend more time inside Tim Burton’s wildly imaginative world. As such, the Johnny Depp-starrer is all-but-guaranteed the number one spot for the second weekend in a row. Not Matt Damon as a military operative in Iraq in Green Zone nor Robert Pattinson brooding without vampire make-up in Remember Me will keep Alice in Wonderland from topping the frame yet again. Also opening this weekend is Dreamworks’ She’s Out of My League and Fox Searchlight’s romantic comedy Our Family Wedding. Read on for how the weekend will pan out.

1. Alice in Wonderland: $52 million

By the end of this weekend Alice in Wonderland will have grossed over $200 million. That’s a milestone that took Charlie and the Chocolate Factory eight weeks to reach; Sweeney Todd never even got close. Yes, 3-D is the box office miracle the business has been waiting for and this weekend that technology will do wonders to keep the vivid spectacle on top of the box office yet again. And that’s good news for Disney, which only has one more weekend to reap their dollars before Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon comes looking for some family discretionary funds.

2. Green Zone: $17 million

Not even the affiliation with the beloved Bourne franchise will help this R-rated adult drama gain much traction at the box office. Yes, Matt Damon is a giant star, but this gritty war drama shot in Paul Greengrass’s kinetic, fast-paced style will have trouble drawing in the audiences. It’s not helping that the film hasn’t received the best reviews. You would guess Universal Pictures signed on to this $100 million project to keep their Bourne players happy. Too bad Greengrass has already bowed out of the next Bourne film and Damon isn’t even a shoo-in without his director pal. This is one movie Universal’s new leadership will likely blame on its previous management team.

3. Remember Me: $10 million

Yes, Robert Pattinson is the star of this plodding drama, but that doesn’t mean the Twilight star is going to draw huge box office numbers. Even the online Twitter and Facebook movements created by tween girls to support Edward Cullen this weekend are not going to do much to pull in the box office cash. And that’s really not a problem for Summit Entertainment. The film cost only $16 million and the studio has already sold off most of its international territories. In fact, a $10 million opener is probably exactly what they’re expecting.

4. She’s Out of My League: $9.5 million

This Judd Apatow-esque comedy from first-time director Jim Field Smith, starring Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up) and Alice Eve (Starter for 10) might generate some box office dollars just because college kids are out on spring break and looking for some laughs. Reviews, though, have been cruel and the marketing dollars spent seems to be rather limited.

5. Our Family Wedding: $9 million

Can America Ferrara turn her Ugly Betty success into a film career? She started in film way back in 2002 with the Sundance fave Real Women Have Curves and later appeared in the chick-lit franchise Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Now she’s playing a bride whose father, played by comedian Carlos Mencia, spars with her groom’s dad (Forest Whitaker.) The film opens in around 1,500 theaters and is likely to generate only single digits.

Check back this weekend to see how close we got.

yes i am positive that Alice in Wonderland will do much better than some dumb ugly guys movie. Alice will probably get more than 70 million in the box office. the only reason that rob pattinson movie will get money is because all those stupid twilight fans will watch the movie. Robert Pattinson is ugly!

    • cindy

Johnny Depp is the only ugly freak that I see!!!!!! Rob is way hotter….go get your eyes tested before making stupid comments and BTW looks have nothing to do with acting ability!!!!!

      • TY

I completely agree. Johnny Depp can act circles around the guy that no one would care about if he didn’t get cast as Edward.

      • Fatima

        Cindy please, you’re embarrassing women.

      • rebecca

well of you weird twilight people think that pattinson can act, but really you are just distracted by his ugliness!

      • Be Real

I think you need to be real and you know in your heart that Mr Depp is far better actor A+ than Mr Pattinson who seriously cannot act.

Lost Boys was a far better movie than any twilight hype movie. In the end all Mr Pattinson will be remembered for is twilight hype and nothing else, so get real Cindy, he doesn’t even come close in all departments.

      • Kylie

Okay I would not read or watch Twilight. But what is with the bashing?

Dag. It is not your cup of tea, and neither is it mine. But of all the romantic tripe that is out there Twilight cannot worst.

    • Rosalie

Why is there so much hatred towards those of us who are Twilight fans? Is there something wrong with choosing a genre over another. Do you call transformer fans stupid as well? How about fans of Harry Potter or The Beatles? Rebecca, I don’t even know you, but based on the fact that you called me stupid because I am a fan of Twilight, makes me think that there is something seriously wrong with you. I may not like CSI, but I would never call someone stupid because they are fans of the show. Learn how to respect individauls taste and you will see how you can go through life smiling more often.

      • Menchy

Do i call transformers fans stupid? Is that a joke? If anyone even tried to tell me they liked that movie, I would consider never speaking to them again…

      • Jason

Do your research. Transformers fans are generally regarded as some of the brightest minds that we as a society have ever seen. Transformers fans will cure cancer and give us world peace. They certainly don’t just like seeing shiny things blow up.

      • Brian

        Sorry, Twilight’s pretty objectively bad.

      • Ryan hoag

Jason, I have a cousin in MIT, a cousin in Yale, a cousin in Carnegie, and I’m at the California Institute of the Arts, If anyone will cure cancer, one of us probably will, or we’ll know personally who did it. And we all think Transformers was…just… really its not worth the time to say it…

      • AD

Yes, Rosalie, I do call Transformer fans stupid. Well, maybe, not stupid… immature and addle-brained.

      • Blaaaake!

Right, Ryan.. because all you brilliant folks have nothing better to do than to post comments on an entertainment website’s blog.

Nice name dropping btw – I’m sure you figured it would give your comment some validity when in actuality, it does the complete opposite.

      • Katie C.

Harry Potter fans are always called nerds. But I don’t hate Twilight fans, I like a lot of them. But I do hate Twilight. *shudders* Then again, so does Robert Pattinson. But Helena Bonham Carter > Robert Pattinson. Way greater, in my opinion.

      • @Rosalie

It’s different. Everyone (all ages, races, sexes) are fans of The Beatles and Harry Potter. Twilight fans are primarily 12 year old girls. Every fanbase gets made fun of: Potterheads, Lord of the Rings fanatics, Trekkies, fanboys, etc. It comes with the territory. The only difference is Twilight is terrible. It’s a sorry excuse for book and a film. It doesn’t deserve the success it’s gotten.

      • ConcernedSoul

Twilight is just a terribly written book and the big screen interpretation is just exponentially worse. The acting, directing, screenplay, etc. is just simply pathetic. I’m truly appalled at the success of the series. Ugh, Im supremely disappointed with the Tweens.

      • Kylie

@Rosalie, I agree with you. Why so much bashing.

I think and this is my own guess. When Twilight came out it was compared to a certain other more universally liked book. It was no comparison they are two different types of books–and the comparison should have never been made. Needless to say it rubbed certain people the wrong way.

Twilight is mainly about Romance. And for Romance novel it has done extremely well. It has a fantasy backdrop but is really about young love. The other book has more universal themes.

But I do not think it right to call anyone ugly.

    • nene

It’s too bad you need glasses – Robert Pattinson is beautiful – he’s been described by both male and female journalists as “gloriously handsome.” With that aside, I am 46 years old and am not a stupid twihard. Alice in Wonderland is a completely different kind of movie. It’s a fantasy movie, while Remember Me is a dark drama. Fantasy pictures do tend to attract more people, because they are usually suitable for both children and adults.

      • nene

And by the way, I do like Twilight, but that doesn’t make me stupid.

      • The Vicster

        yes, it does…

      • charli

I’m going to get into the whole “he is hot, he is not” but I do want to ditto one comment. Different Audiences. that is 100% on the money. Alice is a different kind of film for a different and wider audience. so of course it will make more money.

      • Katie C.

Well, Alice in Wonderland was still an amazing movie. Just to make that clear.

    • Ellie

I think your opinion differs from 99% of the rest of us females.

    • Teeneer

The only “stupid” people are those who childishly accuse others of being stupid based on the films they like. I can enjoy anything from Avatar, to Twilight, to Transformers, to Hurt Locker to La Teta Asustada to raunchy comedies to indie dramas to whatever. Films are just films, we don’t have to be such snobs. (especially when the majority of film douchebags, who look down on Twilight have not even seen it, they just act that way because it’s trendy to hate on the Twilight saga)

      • whatever

I don’t like Twilight, simply because i think that it drags. I don’t think that a person is stupid because they like the movie.
I also don’t think the ability of an actor should be based on their look, good actors are good and bad are bad.
IF you want to sit there and compare the two actors then you have to say that Mr. Depp has a longer more diverse career.

      • Katie C.

You’re right about the trendy thing, but I avoid Twilight even though I’ve read and watched it. I like Robert Pattinson though. But I don’t like Twilight. No offense, though, the fans aren’t stupid or anything.

    • charli

i don’t think that Remember Me will make oodles and oodles but it will do nicely. After all you do have the Twihards and then the Losties (the girl is from there) not to mention perhaps some of the Harry Potter fans that remember him as Cedric and at least in LA and NYC a decent number of folks that might be curious if he’s just a one hit wonder and Edwards appeal is a complete fluke. Especially since he’s gotten some follow ups with some major names (Uma, Hugh, Christoph etc)

    • Olivia

Agree.Johnny Depp is a real star, Pattinson is just a sparkly vampire. There’s no comparison. One with star quality, the other without.

  • Celia

Alice in Wonderland will definitely be on top again, but 52 million seems a little too hefty.
I think Remember Me could make more than 10 mil if the Dear John/twi-tard crowd goes to see it.

    • nene

Twi-tard? That comment makes you a RETARD!

      • Celia

        Okay….

      • Lucas

and your comment is just as nasty as the one that you replied to. better to simply ignore those that have a different opinion. as they are just as entitled to it as you are.

      • mike

wow, a comment can make you a retard? I just thought that it could make you look like a loser…go look in the mirror.

    • Hannah

The low Remember Me prediction is probably based on the theater count. It’s opening in less than 2,000 theaters. Green Zone and Alice are in closer to 3,000 theaters. You see the predicament.

      • Charli

Indeed. Perhaps a better judgement would be per screening numbers. At least when saying one film is way better than another.

    • Dear John Fans

Dear John fans will not be watching Remember Me as they will be watching still Dear John.

Sorry, you will have to depend on the Twilight fans for Remember Me to be a hit, so let’s not get confused as Dear John fans need to still support Dear John.

      • Yeah

Agreed, why would I be watching Remember Me when I can see Dear John instead.

  • rose

i think it’s not nice to call other people stupid.you may hate robert pattinson with passion but not everyone thinks the same way you do. i respect your opinion but i hope you also respect mine. moreover, i am not stupid and i have a doctorate degree to prove it. i hope all the movies do well in the box office. cheers.

    • skink

” i am not stupid and i have a doctorate degree to prove it.”

Oh dear, here come the losers, replete with their “doctorate” degree and the inability to capitalize. Sigh. Just the sort of person who revels in the intellectual wasteland that is the “Twilight” series.

We always get those types whenever they feel Pattinson has been dissed. For some reason, they feel compelled to insist that they are “smart”. Right.

      • whittles

        I agree with you completely…

    • Lala

Ha, I always love when people think listing their degrees on an entertainment discussion board will get them somewhere. The quality of your points and argument should suffice in lieu of listing a resume. I mean, what’s next? Uploading a picture of said degree? There’s nothing to prove.
I don’t think all Twihards are stupid. Negative reviews of anything Pattinson related are usually met with quite a few “Oh plz your (sic) just jealous of his looks and talent!!! I read the script and the plot is beautiful and sad. You just can’t write a good review b/c you hate Twilight!!!” as if critics nationwide decided to care enough to create some mass conspiracy against this actor. The arguments some of the Twihards make are stupid, not the people themselves.

  • Debb

LOL at your bringing up Remember Me at all when it will be in half the cinemas as Alice. 1900. Why bring it up at all? Can’t get hits without Rob’s name or something. Idgi?

  • renate

For me personally I’ll go and see “Remember me” at least 3 times. So back off. Alice just doesn’t do it …..

    • LK

      3 times? Wow…

    • Katie C.

      Alice was amazing.

  • Linda

I am a Robert Pattinson fan and hope that his new movie will do very well. i will definitely see it -tomorrow in fact. I will not see Alice. i am not stupid either!

    • the rest of us

      yes you are

    • Katie C.

Alice is awesome You should see both. Oh, gosh, Alice was amazing.

    • whatever

Your not stupid if you choose to see one or the other, but Alice was not a bad film at all, you might be surprised and find that you like it.
I love all types of movies, your taste and my taste will vary, to me Robert Pattinson hasn’t done anything yet that would tell me he will have a long career in Hollywood.
I gave him a chance in the movie, “Haunted airman” and thought the movie was horrible. If it wasn’t for the Twilight saga I really think he would still be a struggling actor trying to find himself.

  • SaveYourMoney

Robert Pattinson dies in the 9/11 World Trade Center attack at the end of Remember Me, revealing (in extremely poor taste) that the movie takes place in 2001.

    • GGfangirl

You are a rude and inconsiderate jerk for spoiling this film for those of us interested in box office estimates, not spoilers!!!

      Sincerely,
      An Emilie De Ravin fan

      • Carol Seaver

In his defense, he/she did save us some money, maybe he works for GEICO?

      • the rest of us

Any commercial movie using the events of Sept 11 to add dramatic flair is insulting to the thousands who died that day. I wasn’t a fan of those post 9/11 movies about the WTC and United 93, but at least those were centered around the event, not using it as a plot twist. Disgusting, and all the writers, actors, and crew should be ashamed for exploiting the event.

      • whittles

        @GGfangirl
if you’re don’t care about the box office, then why did you not only click on the article, but read all these comments?

    • Celia

Wow. Some people really are jerks.
I knew how it ended, but I wouldn’t spoil it for people. You’re disgusting for sinking that low.

    • cindy

It’s not in bad taste…it is just showing you that you need to love the people in your life because you never know what might happen!!!! Why did you have to spoil the end for people who didn’t know yet????

    • MovieFan

You revealing the ending showed extremely poor taste. Enjoy the attention. It will be short-lived.

  • memakitty

Why is it that e1 seems to think that the only ppl behind this movement to go see Rob Pattinson are tween girls??? The twitter group I belong to is primarily women, you heard me, WOMEN thirty and over. They are the ones behind the Remember Me Saturday!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it, EW!!!!!!

    • cindy

Damn straight…..I’m 36 years old and I love Robert Pattinson and the Twilight Saga!!! I’ve read the books numerous times and I love the movies!!!!

      • Carol Seaver

So creepy old soccer moms love him too? Yeah, keep dreaming, I’m sure Robert Pattinson is lying awake thinking “That hot 21 year old can’t compare to that near 40 something mmmmmmmboy!!!!!!!”

      • Katie C.

        Robert Pattinson, cool.
        Twilight, ugggh.

      • nidhi

i will watch both alice n remember me…they r from different genre….n i m a dentist so not retard or tween….as far as i know we watch movies because they look good on the screen…coz they make us feel wow….alice wow for some rob wow for others….lets try n understand each others choices…..alice is for the kid in our hearts n rob is for the tween in our hearts….so why the fight????

    • nene

I think he’s smokin’ hot! Just because he looks scruffy sometimes doesn’t make him ugly. He’s a very down to earth guy and not hung up on being a fashion plate 24/7.

    • LOL

If you type like that and you’re NOT a teen girl, then that’s just embarrassing.
The biggest publicity push for this film is on Twitter and Facebook. Both of which are crawling with teenage girls.

  • sam

I don’t like Pattinson, but it really isn’t fair to compare these movies. Nobody is a small drama could match Alice.

  • STFU Save your Money

Save Your Money…so you think you’re funny or something? You’re not. Plus, that’s not what the movie is about so STFU! Keep hating on Rob & Twilight all you want. He’s still making more money than you and is loved by more people than you ever will. So crawl back into the hole (rabbit) where you came from.

First of all why is EW comparing Remember Me’s box office to Alice? It’s apples and oranges. Alice is a fantasy flick being shown on expensive IMAX screens and it’s on over 1,000 more screens. Remember Me is a Dramatic Romantic movie Duh! I could see you comparing Alice to Eclipse but Remember Me? That’s stupid. Are you all really in he entertainment business? If so, you should know better.

The last time I saw someone predict a box office that Robert was in was soooo off it was funny. Remember Me is going to surpass expectations as usual. You cannot compare what the Green Zone is going to bring in either. It’s a different type of movie which, again, is going to be shown on over 1,000 screens more than Remember Me. Duh!

But make no mistake about it, Remember Me is going to make some box office. No, it will not be Alice’s figures and it shouldn’t but it’s going to make a lot money.

    • Q

Calm down. It is just a movie.

      • nene

It’s just annoying that people are bashing Robert Pattinson. I’m not a Johnny Depp fan, but I’m not go to trash him because of it.

    • Kylie

      Wow!
Do you know that EW does a weekly projection of movies to be released in theaters and those currently running.

      It is what they do.

It has nothing to do with bashing Remember Me.

They also do an analysis after the fact.

    • James

“First of all why is EW comparing Remember Me’s box office to Alice?”
They do box office predictions EVERY SINGLE WEEK, you lunatic. Some of you fangirls are borderline crazy. Seriously.
And the only people who are going to be surprised by what RM pulls in are said psychotic fangirls who sincerely thought it could “like totally pull in $30 million omgz!”

    • Blaaaake!

Robert’s character dies at the end… in one of the 9/11 towers. they have a big fight, he goes up to see his father and she never sees him again.

      Enjoy!

    • Lala

Revenue and profit projections are widely used in determining a movie’s box office performance. Actually, projections and forecards are widely used in business in general. It’s not “hating” on anyone. Box office performance can also be determined by number of people per screening, and by revenue generated per screening. Alice will still beat Remember Me in both of those respects.

      • Lala

        I meant forecasts, not forecards

  • Kylie

I think Alice will keep the top stop. But I think you underestimate the tween crowd for Remember Me, and ethnic Tyler Perry-ish crowd that likes to support actors that look like them that are positive. I saw the critics panned it up the people are already giving it positive buzz.

So the Out of My League movie–eh. I saw the ads and calling Lindsay Sloan a 6 will alienate women. She is a red headed Anne Hathaway- as far as looks. Hanging your whole box office on teen guys is a rocky move.

And as for Bourne again in Green Zone–Iraq just has a way of killing a movie.

    • Dibannerbze

I don’t think Remember Me will attract any of the Twilight crowd. The Twilight fans are not drawn to Robert Pattinson or any of the actors in the movie. They are drawn to the movies themselves because they are the movies made from their favorite books. Most if not all of them would go see the Twilight movies regardless of who is starring in them. They could recast the movie with different people and that would still attract a huge crowd to them. It wasn’t like the films were very well cast from the beginning anyways unlike Harry Potter which was cast by some kind of half human half gods lol. I have never seen my imagination crystallized as in Harry Potter films. In the Twilight films for some reason i think Edward isn’t just quite right lol.

  • anonymous

I never give a crap about how a movie does at the box office and I don’t care for critics. Its my money and its my choice and I for one will be running to the theatre to see Remember Me. I luv the trailer and I’m interested.

    • Blaaaake!

hey, did you know he dies at the end in one of the 9/11 towers? THey have a big fight, he goes up to see his father and she never sees it again.

      Have fun!

      • Stephanie Selene

Wow. You must have a sad and pathetic life. If spoiling movies for people makes you feel better about yourself, you’re seriously sick. I think that makes you more pathetic than the ‘fangirls’. Have fun! =]

  • Trish

Of course Remember Me won’t draw in the kind of money that Alice in Wonderland will. It doesn’t matter who the star is…a small-scale romantic drama is not going to make the kind of money that a Tim Burton blockbuster is going to make.
However, I’m expecting Remember Me to make closer to 15 mill.

    • whatever

I think it might pull the 15 mil, but it wont sustain it, I think the tone of the movie will leave people feeling depressed and very few movies that deal with that type of issue can keep it going.

TO THE IDIOTS THAT KEEP SAYING THE ENDING FOR THE ONES THAT DON’T KNOW IT, GROW UP AND GET A LIFE

  • deadpool

the bottom line is jhonny depp friggin RULEZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!

  • Josie

The movie budget for Alice would be at least ten times more than for Remember Me. plus it is being shown in more theatres etc. etc. the differences are too many and, as has been said before, one should not compare the two they are apples and oranges. Remember Me has had some excellent reviews from Rogers and Ebert, USA Today and lots more. I can’t wait to see it.
