Meet 'Pirates of the Caribbean's' newest ingenue: Astrid Berges-Frisbey

Berges-Frisbey-Astrid_320.jpg Disney has cast one of France’s most in-demand young stars, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, in the key role of Syrena for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Syrena, according to Pirates’ press notes, is a “beautiful and alluring young mermaid” who will play opposite Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Few plot details have been given for this latest movie, though we know that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom’s characters Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner will not be back for the new iteration directed by Chicago helmer Rob Marshall.

Berges-Frisbey, 23, is a French model and actress, who has appeared in French films La Premiere Etoile and Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique and the French stage production of Peter Shaffer’s Equus. The movie is set to begin filming in June on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles. It’s slated to open on May 20, 2011.

maybe there’ll be a cell block tango featuring mermaids!!!bwahahahaha!!

I am so happy that Orlando Calrician and The Princess are not in the new movie. As long as they make it Captain Sparrow centered like the first movie and not make it 3 hours it could be a good movie

*sigh* if your going to hire someone who looks like Keira Knightly, why bother not getting Keira Knightly. Or pull an Other Darren and recast the role.

Personally, I could go without any younger star crossed lovers. Just focus on Barbossa and Jack’s race to the fountain of youth, throw in a new curse, add in fun, and you’ve got a movie without any necessary romantic entanglements.

I’d much prefer a return of Anna Maria myself, if they must have a female protagonist.

Add this with a new director, and I’m really not interested in this, and I still admit to liking Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, although I can see where people wouldn’t like them.

    A mermaid? Nyahhh :/

    • nick

I think it’s just the beginning of a mermaid series and the true end of Pirates of the Caribbean

  • Stacy

She is so pretty. But mermaid? Idk, Disney…

  • Angela

There better not be a crab-dude that sings… That octopus bad guy dude was already pushing it but mermaid? really?

  • barock

I hope she gets her bottom half for Sparrow’s sake

This is sounder dumber and dumber. I love Depp but come on. She’s young enough to be his daughter! I also still have a bad taste in my mouth from the third film, and wondering what Bloom and Knightley know that we don’t that made them want to run the hell away.

    • JasonHomey

Thats pretty funny the irony of saying this is sounder dumber.

    • AD

How old do you think Johnny Depp is? He couldn’t be her father…

      • Laura

Johnny Depp’s 46… this girl is 23… he could easily be her father.

      • Kelsey

Um, yeah he could? He’s in his mid-to-late 40s and she’s in her early 20s. Yes, he could be her father.

    • tipsy

LOL @ Bloom and Knightley running away. They didn`t. Disney ran away from them. especially from Bloom who is a terrible actor. Knightley is fishing for the Oscar so she cna be excused. But he? His movie line-up looks like crap and he is begging LOTR fans to campaign for Legolas return in The Hobbit 9although he isn`t in the book). His 15 minutes of fame are over.

  • Itchy

As long as the top half is real… (this is a nod to the story recently and not a perverted statement.)

  • AK

I’m not sure she can every be a star with a name like that. What a mouthful! (And very cacophonic, too.)

    • JR

“very cacophonic”? Long and a mouthful, yes. But the only thing that would approach cacophonic might be the second ‘b’. It’s a french name…

  • Michael

I’m french and I had never heard of her until now !! ;-)

  • Matt1

@Everyone who’s balking at the whole ‘mermaid’ thing…
Have any of you read the book from which On Stranger Tides is based?? I didn’t think so!
The mermaid role is featured prominently and if the movie follows through, will be very poigniant.
Pirates 2 and 3 had moments of brilliance though were admittedly very flawed. Don’t give up hope though people! This franchise (if done right) can have many more awesome installments to come…

    • amy

I had no idea it would be based on a book-thanks for the tip, Matt!

    • tipsy

Mermaid cannot be worse than Giant Calypso doing a Stargate voice and dessolving into crabs.

  • Annah

i tink she looks swt.. en ha movie wil b wondrous….

  • selma

yeah i saw her in the movie “un barrage contre le pacifique” and she was pretty good, she was even nominated for a cesar (the french academy award)

  • Mac

The last two Pirates movies were soooooo boring. Can’t Disney come up with another idea – maybe “Big Thunder Mountain: Jorley’s Gold”?

  • Dylan

I don’t care how ruggedly handsome Depp is, this pairing is going to be a little creepy.

    • rmr797

Who says they are going to be a pair? In any of these movies has Cap’n Jack been “with” any of the leads? nope.

    • Quirky

Any creepier than a 100+ year old vampire trolling high schools for teenage girls? Maybe mermaids are immortal or live long lifes like the LOTR elves.

      • @Quirky

Ha, ha, ha! You said it, Quirky! Yeah, maybe mermaids, being mythological creatures, like elves, have extraordinarily long lives/ are quasi-immortal.

    • Virginia

What pairing? All press says that any sparks are between Depp and Cruz in the film – the mermaid may be the bad-news-kind as well, that drown people for fun.

    • tipsy

Depp is paired with Pene Cruz who is playing Blackbeard`s daughter. Also, they are casting a young actor to play a character a la Will Turner. Jeremy Irons`s son and another Brit are in consideration.

  • harry

    mermaid huh? sounds exciting!!!
