Box office update: 'Dragon' headed for top spot with new releases 'The Back-Up Plan' and 'The Losers' headed for obscurity

train-your-dragonImage Credit: DreamWorks AnimationYou know you’ve fallen out of A-list territory when your new release can’t beat a 5-week old animated movie about dragons. But such is the case for Jennifer Lopez and her romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan. The PG-13 comedy about a single mom who finds love after starting a family on her own likely won the top spot Friday night with an estimated $4 million. But prognosticators believe that lead won’t last through the weekend. Most put the Alan Poul-directed film finishing around $12 million for the three-day frame, while Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon will earn around $16 million based on its Friday take of $3.7 million. Likely to hold the lead with a scant 16% drop, Dragon is now on track to top $180 million by the end of the weekend.

Early results show Date Night nabbing the third spot with a $10 million take for the three-day period. The Steve Carell, Tina Fey-laugher only fell 40% last evening, a drop that will likely result in the PG-13 comedy grossing a total of $63 million by the end of the weekend.

Last weekend’s topper Kick-Ass and this weekend’s other new release, The Losers, will battle it out for the fourth spot. Kick-Ass’s early results are bound to leave  fan boys — who were counting on strong word-of-mouth to buoy the picture its second weekend in theaters — disappointed. Matthew Vaughn’s unique take on the superhero genre is likely to fall around 62% for the frame, making it unlikely the R-rated flick will even see double-digits its second weekend in theaters. Early results are showing a Friday take of $2.8 million translating into a $9 million three-day cume. The Losers, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Zoe Saldana, isn’t faring much better. The film’s Friday number is a bit higher than Kick-Ass, at a little over $3 million, but it’s also looking at a $9 million opening frame.

Perhaps betting on dragons isn’t such a dumb idea after all. Check back tomorrow for complete results.

This movie is a JOKE! J-Low is a JOKE! She can’t even hold a record deal yet alone a a movie. Please do us a favor and RETIRE! You are not popular any more and this m movie proves it!

    • Lucas

hate to say it but yes, JLo is a has been. she was never a great actress to begin with which just makes it worse.
this movie with someone else as the female might have done better because there was so much hype over this being JLo return to acting that I think folks expected tons more and didn’t get it. oops.

      • tipsy

When J-Lo was Jennifer Lopez and did stuff like Out of Sight, she had a real potential. But she opeted for whatever seemed most commercial at the moment (and whoever boyfriend gave her most press) ever since she adopted J-Lo persona and the quality went straight to hell tking her short-lived star power with it. She`s a has-been now with no hope of pulling a Mickey or Downey Jr. At least as long as Marc Anthony keeps her imprisioned.

JLo has always done romantic comedies well and she does this one well. It is funny and enjoyable and a great date movie–that is what it is supposed to be. Stop the hate of Jennifer. You clearly haven’t seen the movie–it is funny and Jennifer and Alex O’Loughlin are both very good in it.

    • Jesse James

I agree that J.Lo’s career is not where it used to be, but she can have a comeback just like many of the other actresses in Hollywood- Sandra Bullock, anyone? The few movies she made before The Back-Up Plan were flops and the critics were saying the same things they are saying about J.Lo right now. She can still have a major comeback, so let’s not count her out yet.

    • Ann

Sorry to say, but I agree with most people on this post who say Lopez should retire. Lopez simply doesn’t have the longevity to be in Hollywood. Lopez was awesome last decade and it was the climax of her career. Some people can pull off being in Hollywood even though they were relevant last decade (Aniston, Bullock). Lopez just doesn’t have [it]

    • Pedro

All J-Lo needs to do is stop doing nonsense like this, ditch her comfort zone and leave the rom-com genre alone for a few years. She can’t do any worse.

  • Adwina Lambert

    has-been j.ho must go!! tee-hee!!

  • DavidJ

Finally checked out Kickass, and thought it was decently entertaining, but not much more. From all the hype, I was expecting something a lot more daring and original.

Kinda wish I went to the Dragon movie instead….

    • Lucas

yep. they toned it down cause there was a kid in the cast but went too far down. turned it rather cheesy in the process.
which would have been fine if they embraced the cheesy and went at it like the Scream of comic book movies but it fails even as that

  • jaime

It karma jlo! That’s what she gets for thinking she was to good to not go to the Selena 10aniv concert in Houston.

    Selena RIP.

    • Meso soup

Jlo don’t listen to these haters, at least you’ve accomplished something with your life. If only posters could say the same…..

      • the chief

I am married to a beautifdul woman, a father of 3, have nice home in NY and work as an executive at a major record company… and I can’t stand J-ello… she sucks and her movies are lame and her music is horrid

  • jason.

See, this is what I was worried about: not only are we getting two (admittedly different) comic-based movies released almost back-to-back here, but there’s a chance the Losers is going to tank.

Haven’t seen it yet, but the comics were by far the best action movie I’ve ever read (and as a story with an ending planned from the beginning, they didn’t waste time vamping at all).

Even if the movie tanks, I would recommend reading the comics…

Oh, and Dragon? Was fantastic. Of course, the higher prices and family-fare rating has to be helping.

Still, in two weeks, you’re all Iron Man 2′s bridesmaids…

I might have gone to see BackUp Plan for Alex O’Loughlin but when I found out that CBS had partnered with the HSUS (radical animal rights group Humane Society of the United States which is NOT a humane society) I along with a whole lot of other pet owners and livestock producers boycotted the movie. It was all over the internet on pet-law lists and other animal related blogs. Bad partner choice, CBS.

    • Lucas

So cause they don’t give money to local shelters they are devils, even though they lobby the government for animal rights laws.
      Interesting.
I’m also unclear on what you mean by ‘partnered with’.
If you are referring to the bit at the end credits that HSUS certified that no animals were harmed during filming, that’s required for all films that use animals. CBS Studios had no choice

      • Terry

They lobby for laws to eliminate animal ownership entirely, they are considered the greatest enemy of agriculture (ask your state Farm Bureau) with their anti-meat stance. Go to the website for the movie and click on partners – then click on the pet shop link.

      • Kiare

Lucas, the laws they lobby for are incredibly restrictive- and in some cases, the spay/neuter laws that they back hurt responsible breeders, as well as those who train specialty dogs (assistance animals, police dogs, etc) – and actually wind up benefiting puppy mills and commercial breeders. They fleece people into donating to HSUS, making them think that the money goes to local Humane Society chapters (when most local HS’s go to great lengths to distance themselves from HSUS).

    • PFETD

I am with you, I refused to see How to train a Dragon, because I am a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Dragons, I cannot confirm the producers of this movie did not harm dragons. Geeze, some people.

I saw Dragon last night and am so glad I did instead of any of the new releases. It was such a great film!

I hate it for Jeffery Dean Morgan, but he is just not a leading man yet. I think he is great though, and hope he will try more supporting roles with bigger stars than try to be the next Bruce Willis. That isn’t going to fly… in my opinion. Not yet at least.
    Oh, and, J.Lo = no-no.

  • freane

Jennifer Lopez is so OVER Hollywood. Done finished!. You are no longer the box office girl. You husband is so UGLY who look like a skeleton. “Back-Up Plan” is the some plot as “Switch” w/ Jen Aniston. Both FLOPPED.. OMG it was boringgggg

    • Get Real

The Switch has not been released yet and Jennifer Aniston’s latest movie is a HIT – its made 120 million world wide

    • Dawn

I love JA haters who don’t bother checking their facts. The Switch doesn’t open till August 20th. And I have a feeling it will do better because it was produced by the same producers who were behind Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. The Back up plan was produced by the now 0-2 CBS films and Les Moonves who should stick to TV and get out of movies.

  • onestell

I’ll still go see THE LOSERS and KICK-ASS. DATE NIGHT (no matter how big a fan I am of Steve Carrell) still looks like a rental to me.

  • Rita

BOTH Jennifers – Lopez and Aniston – need to retire with all of their millions and realize that the public is NOT interested in whatever silly endeavor they attempt at acting…please, go away

    • Get Real

Jennifer Aniston has made The Break Up, Marley and Me, HJNTIY, and her latest movie The Bounty Hunter has currently made 120 million world wide.

People are definitely going to see Jennifer Aniston – as for J-Lo we’ll see if she can make a come back

  • Bre

I’m still going to see the Losers, it looks like a fun ride.

    • Lucas

If you go into it with that attitude, you’ll likely enjoy it. If you expect something killer with ground breaking effects, a flawless story etc, it will probably disappoint.
      Same with Kick Ass

    • Andy

      Its alright, nothing special.

    • WhitneyD

I saw it- it was fun! Not a brilliant flick, but definitely a fun time.

  • Jpx

This is not at all surprising. Tha backup plan looked as awful as Motherhood. Why is there no quality control in Hollywood? Jlo has lost all relevancy, when was the last time she did anything of significance?

    • mfan

It’s super hard to come up with new plots. But if you stick with something tried and true, the fashion is to criticize you for it.

  • D’s Advocate

Not surprising–Back-Up Plan’s trailer felt like a relic from the late 90′s to me. I don’t think Lopez should retire from films necessarily, but she should certainly consider finding herself some more interesting scripts to work with. I miss the Jennifer Lopez who made films like “Out Of Sight”.

  • Aaron

I prescreened The Losers and had never read the comics, it was fantastic. Funny and action packed, plus each character was awesome. I just saw kick ass lastnight and it’s pretty cool, hit girl is great. And really who hasn’t wished to be a hero at some point in their lives?

  • Bobby

What a crappy weekend for movies, absolutely nothing good out there.Only two more weeks until Iron Man 2 kicks everyone’s butt.

    • DT

Bring on IRONMAN 2 already, please!!!
