Jackson did what no one thought could be done: bring the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy to a mass audience and have a huge commercial success with it. Doing “The Hobbit” would be redundant, and a potential disaster. Not only could the film (or films) be a mess, but they could very well tarnish the legacy of the first trilogy (as Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels). Leave it alone!!
It’s based on the actual book by Tolkien. It was written BEFORE LOTR and the story is completely different. I don’t understand how you can say that the story is redundant when it was intended to be read first. The only reason the LOTR trilogy was developed first is because they were more popular and well known than The Hobbit and by filming all three films at the same time, it saved money. This is NOTHING like Lucas’ Star Wars prequels which never existed when the Original Trilogy came out in the 70′s and 80′s. He developed that story later on in life. The Hobbit on the other hand, was written before LOTR and has events that lead directly into the trilogy. Plus, Jackson has said that the second film will be a bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR. It will not be a mess as Jackson understands Tolkien and I predict a MAJOR success on both films. Mark my words!! It’s just a question of when it will start.
After over 9 hours of Lord of the Rings trilogy, I’ve had enough of that world. Great trilogy though…
Jackson wasnt going to direct this one because he was going to produce it and didnt want both jobs.. when del toro dropped out the two of them tried to find a suitable replacement but jackson said if it would prove to be unsuccessful that he himself would helm the directors chair just to make this film happen
it wud be awesome to have pj running the show!
Hope funding doesn’t cause problems
I’m waiting for an apology from Adam Vary and all the other bloggers and journalists out there who insisted that Peter could not direct these two movies. I mean it was if it was written in blood. Vary penned an article with the title “Why Guillermo del Toro left the Hobbit–And Peter Jackson WILL NOT replace him as Director”….LOL oh really.
I love that Jackson may return to the directors chair but I hope he’s 100% invested in it. First it was del Toro than he left, than we had Jackson state that he would direct if needed and now he’s in talks.
What Pete did with LotRs was amazing and I want to see the same quality for the Hobbit. Now if Pete is committed, as I hope, than this should be a fun ride.
it would be sad if MGM went under–so much history with that studio…
