'Inception,' 'Eclipse,' and more: Lisa and Owen talk summer movie moments

Sometimes one moment in a movie encapsulates the whole experience.  Remember the moment in Toy Story 3 where a Spanish-speaking Buzz Lightyear did the paso doble? Or the one in Twilight : Eclipse where Jacob had his shirt off? (Uh, which moment when he had shirt off?) Recently, Owen and I got to talking about a few of those memorable moments in four big summer movies. Check out our video after the jump. Then make a case for your own favorite moment from this summer’s movie slate.

THE moment of the summer is the Toy Story 3 toys holding hands, facing whatever they’re facing, together.
It is harrowing and uplifting at the same time. The image is hard to shake.

    • Jackie

I know! The first thing I thought of when I saw that was the scene in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ when Sam and Frodo are perched on a rock with the lava pouring down from Mount Doom… I barely breathed! (During both movies.)

      • dee

God, that was so epic. My audience went nuts at the end. Good times.

      • Paola

The new gym is OFF THA CHAIN!! This pollen and my glleraies did not help with time on today’s WOD, but I guess it wasn’t too bad. Finished in 11:44.

    • Iggy

Right! What a great scene…but also at the end with Andy reluctantly giving away Woody (I know…Dirty!) and playing with all the toys one more time. That’s when I lost it.

      • kiki

@Iggy: Ditto! I’ve seen it twice and lost it both times!

    • Madd

Oh God, I bawled like a baby! I somehow actually thought that was how it was going to end. And yes, that ending with Andy made me lose it.

    • MovieMan

      Thanks for spoiling it jackass!!!

      • D

hey MovieMan, I wouldn’t be reading an article on summer movie moments (especially when TS3 is mentioned in the title) and not expect a spoiler. Get over it.

      • Liz

It’s been out for about a month it’s open season and it’s up to you to avoid spoilers, Mr. I-read-EW-and-expect-not-to-see-spoilers

    • Carla

INCEPTION was AWFUL!! Seriously, don’t waste your time or money. Storyline was not “too intelligent” for me, just plain stupid. Very disappointed!!!

      • doug

inception was awesome! but i do agree the storyline was not too complicated, in fact it was quite simple. the events that need to take place to acheive this simple plot is what makes this trippy and fun. a maze is used as an analogy for a dream in the movie. the same analogy can be use for the movie itself. the point of the maze if very simple, get to the end. But it is the twists and turns and figuring out which way to go that make even doing a maze fun.

      • Otis

@Carla: Couldn’t agree with you more. Saw Inception opening nght and was extremely disappointed. Hope you aren’t attacked in these pages by the studio shills and pseudo intellectuals who can’t tell a bad Hollywood action-FX movie from something cerebral.

      • Aaron

Inception was awful??? You’re just trying to be different. I just saw it last night and was thoroughly entertained. Christopher Nolan is extremely talented and he makes a great film. I can see if it wasn’t your cup of tea, but to say it’s “awful” makes it painfully obvious that you’re just trying to seem smarter than people who enjoyed the film…but you’re not until you explain to why you think it was awful. Get off your soap box carla. It’s just entertainment.

      • moviebuff

@Otis: So because I thought Inception was a fantastic film, that means I’m a pseudo intellectual who can’t understand the cerebral? Because in making an unbelievably condescending claim like that, you’ve become this “pseudo intellectual” who deems it necessary to validate your own opinion of the film by tearing down others’.

I’m probably guilty of this too sometime, but when a polarizing film is released and you don’t appreciate what it brings, it doesn’t invalidate the actual quality of the picture or the individuals whose opinions differ from yours. I absolutely loved the film and I really like talking about it with those who didn’t find it so enthralling because I think the discussion is interesting, but if you’re going to sit there like a two year old and divulge in name calling instead of actually discussing the film, you come off looking really defensive and immature.

      • Dennis McCarthy

I concur with Carla. I really wanted to like it, but my brain just hurt.

    • shawshank

And likewise, THE moment in Inception is the turning hotel fight scene.

  • Jobless

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but watching Owen criticize Inception and lauding Eclipse makes me sick.

    • LOL

thank you for giving me the heads up to not watch this video if that is indeed true.
I really do not respect EW anymore.

      • Zampano

To be fair, Owen Glieberman has never deserved your respect. He is a terrible film critic, with highly questionable taste. Even though that FEELS so much like a fact, I suppose I should add, “In my opinion.”

    • Robert

So he thinks Inception was just okay but then goes on to talk about his love for the incredibly stupid Twilight movies? Dear God, I’m going to be sick.

      • Madd

Seriously. I’ve decided I can’t read either Lisa or Owen’s reviews anymore. Would I be a great critic? Perhaps not. But I definitely wouldn’t give every romantic comedy (except Killers) a B because the setting is pretty (Leap Year, Letters to Juliet, etc).

      • john

he definitely did not talk about his “love” of twilight. He explicitly referred to it as a “guilty pleasure” and made it pretty clear in the video why he ENJOYED the film. It has nothing to do with Twilight’s cinematic achievement. One must understand that to be a succesful film critc, you cannot judge all films with the same critical lens, you must adapt said lens for different types of movies. I think it’s rediculous that Owen should be attacked for his ENJOYMENT of a certain movie (and I definitely don’t think he’s running to give twilight an A). If you read his reviews they are all extremely insightful and valid opinions on film. You’re right, sometimes I think owen is overly generous (like his decades top 10, that list kind of did suck), but to call him a bad critic for a “guilty pleasure” is just absurd. Everyone has them. Don’t be so quick to jump down someones throat. PS I happen to consider Owen one of the better critics working the scene today (along with A.O. Scott, Michael Phillips and several others), You should be able to read his reviews and understand why, even if you don’t agree wtih them

      • LOL

this is hilarious. suggesting that the twilight movies reminds you of 50s melodramas doesnt make them any more sophisticated. crap is crap.

    • Rebekah

I agree with the general concensus here that EW’s movie reviews often leave something to be desired. I was also surprised by Owen applauding Eclipse but not Inception. Though, as a fan of Eclipse and I’m sure a future-fan of Inception, perhaps the difference is that Eclipse doesn’t take itself seriously–the actors, filmakers, etc. understand that it is, indeed, a guilty pleasure. In other words, I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two films; they are entirely different animals.

      • c

Maybe I read a different review-but the one I read in IW said “inception” was an incredible movie that he needed to see again. That review really made me want to see the movie. I’m not sure what you guys want. Does he have to trash Eclipse to make Inception look better? Can’t he like both? (And I’m not a Twilight fan!!)

      • David

C…that review you’re refering to was written by Lisa. Not Owen.

    • Wil

What, seriously? He gave s**t to Inception instead of Eclipse? Ridiculous.

      • Jale

My hips are smoked but that was so much fun!! (in a sick, sgidusting way). Next time we need assigned yellers/counters and Murphie needs to be here because it’s just not FGB if she isn’t telling me I can pick up something heavy and throw it at a wall.Pretty pumped with my score increase but not as pleased that I continue to catch wall balls with my face. One step at a time

  • Matt

EW’s relentless pandering to the Twilight demographic is pathetic.

    • StewyFan

They didn’t exactly rave about it. I mean come on.

      • Blah

I’m sick of hearing about it in general. Good, bad, I don’t care. I just want it to go away.

      • StewyFan

I understand, and I feel for those of you that despise Twilight, but this is a post concerning summer blockbusters. So …. did you think they were going to skip over it? Let’s be rational.

      • RA

Stewy, no matter how many times you post on these threads, Twilight will still be a huge suckfest. You won’t make them good no matter how many times you call people down for hating them. Also, you won’t be able to excuse EW for continuing to pander to the lowest common denominator for money. You are completely failing to sway anyone with your case. Fine, they are making a few $$. People have questionable taste apparently. Big deal – they will always be super-bad regardless. Super..bad…movies.

      • StewyFan

Who am I trying to sway? I think you are missing the point entirely.

      • Cat

I can say the same for you, RA. You’re not swaying any of us either. And anyways, I don’t see anything in those posts where “StewyFan” is trying to sway somebody. They’re just making a point.

  • Sean Elliott

The incinerator at the climax of “Toy Story 3,” which has the same existential power of the final moments of “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957).

  • Kelsey

Toy Story 3 had so many great moments.
The scene in the incinerator, when everyone seems to accept their fates.
Andy playing with Bonnie and letting go of his toys.
Lotso seeing himself being replaced, and you can actually SEE him crack in the head.
Spanish!Buzz was funny and clever (what parent hasn’t done something similar on accident when setting up a toy?) but I don’t think it spoke to the story’s themes the way those other scenes did.

    • The Other Guy

Yeah, the moment with Lots-O-Huggin-Bear (I’m not stooping low and saying “Lotso”, his nickname was the worst part of the movie) going insane was pretty cool. Toy Story 3 was the best kids movie of the year, and Twilight is the worst movie of any category this year. Simple. There’s nothing wrong with trashing Inception, but even saying one tiny good thing about that series is too much.

  • StewyFan

Toy Story 3 was a great film. I teared up so many times during that movie, being a big fan of the first two. The incinerator scene, I was losing it.
Eclipse, I loved it too. I thought the tent scene was so well done and conveyed the emotions from the book. I was worried that it would come off rather cheesy on film, but it didn’t to me.
I can’t wait to see Inception. I’m sure it will be great as well.

    • Rebekah

Agreed. With everything you said. Perfection.

  • gustiq

INCEPTION: the last 10 seconds of the film. The entire theater gasped in unison.
    Such a wonderful film.

    • Jose

At the end, when the before the film cut off everyone was just staring at the screen at the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen, at the end there where shouts of “Come on!, No!, Why? What the Fu..,” so awesome.

    • Skip182

I want to bring a camcorder in and tape audience reactions to that, becaquse at the midnight screening I was at last night, the reaction was hilarious. Only Nolan could give an ending like that without infuriating viewers.

    • kerry

When I saw it, most of the audience was so bored they just wanted it to end. You could see people checking their watched for the last hour.

      • kerry

        watches

    • Sharon

That was the theater waking up … all at once.

    • Carla

Again, by the end of this awful movie, I – and others around me – could care less if this was a dream or his “reality”. Movie failed to endear any characters to audience – I couldn’t wait til it was over!!! Still mad!!

      • The Other Guy

Look, this is the guy who made the Dark Knight, Inception couldn’t possibly have been that bad.

  • Jamie

Ditto to gustiq about the last 10 seconds of Inception. I won’t spoil anything, but…wow.
And if you’re sick of Eclipse, just don’t talk about it. Toy Story 3 and Inception provide PLENTY of great summer-movie moments. The best way to deal with Eclipse fatigue is to stop giving it attention. Just because Owen and Lisa feel the need to discuss it doesn’t mean any of you should.

  • jen

NOT AGAIN!!! Whenever there’s a new film coming out the name Robert Pattinson is always on it, in every way possible! Stop riding please!

  • ballroom dancer

Sorry quick correction…Buzz and Jessie dance a paso doble…not a tango. Two different dances completely.

    • Lisa Schwarzbaum

I thank you for the correction by doing a traveling spin!

  • Syn

to all you twilight haters..hate all you want..there are some people that do like it..you talk about the critics..what are you one Ra..grow up..I am sure there are movies you like that many people dislike to..

  • RyRyNYC

OMFG… GLEIBERMAN NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!! A F**KING 1950s MELODRAMA?!?!?!?! How dare he even try to include any of those sh**ty “actors” from the Twilight in the same notion as the great actrs of the 50s (i.e. the Hepburns, Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, etc. el.) Own is a disgusting critic. And shame on Lisa for allowing him to even breathe that notion in her presence!

    • The Other Guy

Honestly, though, most of the 50s movies aren’t all that good either. But I agree with you.

  • jodipo

omg, my favorite movie moment is either when Bella and Edward make out *squeeee* or when Jacob and Bella Make out *squeeee*!

ok, but really though I love the toy story moment they mentioned. When Andy decided to give Woody away despite his love of him, thats the only moment that I really wanted to cry. I dunno if its the moment I will remember once summer is over, but its the one i remember right now. I haven’t seen Inception yet… need to go soon.

  • vivacious_red_hed

I enjoyed Eclipse, I loved Toy Story 3, I won’t see Inception because it doesn’t interest me, but then I didn’t care for The Godfather or Braveheart, or Gladiator….all too violent (real people violent, unlike fantasy violence) Twilight may be insipid, lightweight, unconscionable for most “serious” people but it’s good entertainment, especially if you’ve read the books. I’m so glad we don’t all agree on anything…diversity in choice and intelligence is a good thing.

    • StewyFan

I agree with what you said about Twilight. But I do enjoy my intelligent and violent movies as well. I love all genres of movies, be it fantasy romance or suspence thriller or intellectual mind bender.

    • amina

where did ya see eclipse also i love that ed ward

      • sabrina

        ya are dump

  • Carl

Just saw Inception. It was beyond brilliant. Anyone criticizing that movie, and praising Eclipse is insane. Literally. Inception was not only action packed but a great movie. We’re talking almost David Lynch level here. If the critics couldn’t see it, that’s no surprise. Truly great movies usually aren’t appreciated on first viewing. People can hate on me for that comment, or Nolan, or the movie or whatever, but that was brilliant. And it will long outlast Owen’s juvenile hatred.

    • @carl

On Owen. His opinions are always kinda ‘dumb down’. Either he is trying to appeal to the dumb masses or sadly he really is that awful at judging anything. I haven’t seen this movie yet but have read his past reviews. Then again is you check around you will see most American movie critics today are awful, they are all fangurls. Gone are the days when you could read a review and even if you disagreed with it at least you felt the review had some sense and high hopes for film

    • Otis

@Carl: Did you actually see Inception? Are you a shill for the studio? My wife and I and another couple did see Inception Friday night (7/16) and ALL thought it was a terrible movie… confusing, boring, nothing new in FX. Even DiCaprio couldn’t save this mess. I nodded off and had a bad dream that I went to a movie, fell asleep and had a bad dream that I was watching a movie about a bad dream.

      • kerry

THANK YOU! I was so bored! I don’t mind deliberate confusion, I don’t mind time jumps (loved 500 days of summer), but this seemed to be “I’ll do it because I can! See how money I spent?!” My dad said he wanted to shoot himslef halfway through so his bad dream would end.

    • The Other Guy

Now that’s more like it, Carl. Glad to know not everyone has gone insane here.
