'Pushing Daisies' star Lee Pace in negotiations for 'Breaking Dawn'

Sources confirm to EW that Lee Pace, the star of the short-lived series Pushing Daisies, is in negotiations to co-star in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Summit Entertainment wouldn’t confirm the casting, but sources say his name rose to the top after he read for the role of Garrett, Edward’s best friend in the final book of the saga, last week. E! Online first posted news of this casting yesterday.

The hiring will mark director Bill Condon’s first casting decision since coming on board the mammoth project, which will be split into two movies. The first half of Breaking Dawn will bow on Nov. 18, 2011. Most recently Pace, an Oklahoma native, co-starred in When in Rome A Single Man, and Marmaduke.

Production is set to begin in October in Louisiana and Vancouver.

Garrett is not Edward’s best friend. This movie is becoming lamer by the second. DO NOT MAKE IT 3D PLEASE. Isn’t he that nomad from the 1700′s America.

    • Liz

I don’t even remember this character.

      • Karate Pants

Though I’ve read it, I had no idea who “Edward’s best friend Garrett” could have been, had to look it up.
Garrett was a nomad that showed up at the end of the book – BUT he wasn’t Edward’s best friend. That’s silly. Nicole (or someone) has really bad information.
Sidenote – Lee Pace as disheveled nomadic vampire? YES, PLEASE!

      • Karate Pants

Now, if Garrett had REALLY been Edward’s bff as alleged, it would have shaved about 500 pages off that nightmarish monstrosity that is Breaking Dawn (Alice’s worldwide adventure to hunt for witnesses to save spine-snapping demon baby Renesmee would have been unnecessary – along with all of the nonsense that occured during said adventure. Because his bff would have already been there, as a bff would. Plus, he would have had a decent bachelor party.

      • dee

I don’t either. Everyone who’s read the books knows Edward doesn’t have friends outside of Bella and his own family anyway. It’s sad that Meyer’s characters are so nondescript that I can’t even remember hardly any of them.

      • Liz Lemon

Likewise. I read the book (unfortunately) only once when it came out and I will never touch it again. Worst literary experience of my life. It was even worse than Watership Down and I loath that book.

      • dee@Liz Lemon

Breaking Dawn is quite possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. After finishing it, I gave it and the other three to someone else, knowing I would never want to read them again. Which is saying a lot, because I frequently reread books, and I rarely, if ever, get rid of them.

      • @Liz

You’re not the only one! I do love Lee Pace though, so I’d be happy to see him get some work.

    • Diane

Totally agree with all the other remarks that I’m reading. Where did EW or Bill Condon ever get the idea that Garrett was Edward’s best friend? But he’s just one of the many vampires that the Cullen family enlist to stand by them at the end. And yes he was a Nomad.

    • Caitlyn

If you don’t like the movies, then why do even bother to comment on them? You’re just wasting your time!

    • Rosalie

Honestly speaking, the nomad vampires, including the volturri have no purpose in this series. They add no value to the story whatsoever. They could have been a simple footnote saying that the Volturri “enforce” vampire laws. I hate to say it, but it’s not like Harry Potter, where just about every character that is mentioned serves a simple purpose. For example, Mr. Olleander, the wand maker. He has a purpose to the story and we see him through the series. All this nomad vampires, we learn about them at the end and have no purpose whatsoever. Think about it, how much did we really know about Victoria, the real threat through the series? She only spoke 3, maybe 4 lines through the entire series. I have not seen Eclipse and I will not watch Breaking Dawn either.

      • WHAT?

The Volturi demonstrate the differences between the “typical” nature of Vampires compared to the lifestyle the Cullens have chosen. This whole storyline speaks to the nature of whether they are damned for what they are or who they are. I haven’t thought too much about the nomads, but the Volturi serve a purpose. This is just one way.

      • Flyer

With the Volturi, Stephanie Meyer introduced a potentially intriguing idea, and then DID NOTHING FURTHER WITH IT. It was a major disappointment (though not that surprising, considering the poor quality of the rest of Meyer’s writing). We already KNOW what the difference is between the “typical” nature of a vampire and the Cullens’ lifestyle. Everyone knows that vampires drink human blood, and we’re told in “Twilight” that the Cullens limit themselves to animals. I got the concept with Louis in “Interview with the Vampire” long before “Twilight,” and thank heavens in the Lestat books, Anne Rice didn’t feel the need to treat her readers like idiots.

      • WHAT?

Of course we know the true nature of vampires. By my statement regarding the true nature of vampires, I didn’t necessarily mean something as literal as drinking blood. Personally, I think it is deeper than that. At least that is how it spoke to me. I think the Anne Rice books were written with a completely different story in mind. I don’t think it is even relevant to compare her books with the twilight series just because there are vampires in both stories. I guess if you felt like an idiot reading the Twilight books, then they aren’t for you. If that is the case, I hope you didn’t read all of them.

    • Jeff Eastwood

I might actually watch the movie if there is a scene of Edward and Garret making out. Bill Condon, the director, is gay so maybe not as far-fetched as it sounds… except that the chick who wrote the books is a Morman so maybe not. Oh well. A guy can dream, can’t he?

      • SiD

I like the way you think. Come to the world of fanfiction; we’ll give you Edward & Garrett making out!

      • Taberli

Go watch “Little Ashes” if you want to see Robert Pattinson make out with a guy. Its a very good movie.

    • bad pun alert

all we are saying… is give Pace a chance

    • Kate

I’s pretty sure Garrett was not Edward’s best friend. Where did they get that from? haha He was probably closest to Emmett.

    • nisa

      Right! no where near it.

  • Jeff

This may be the worst news I’ve read all day. Seriously, Lee Pace?? You’re SO, SO much better than Twilight. Pushing Daisies was absolutely brilliant and Pace is immensely talented. Such a shame it’s going to waste on Twilight…

    • Sadie

I wish it was Vampire Diaries he was doing instead

    • DeeMac

YES, he was so brilliant that they canceled his show….right!

      • Flyer

Obviously he was too brilliant for YOU.

    • Brooke

      I agree with this comment.

    • Karate Pants

Come on, he did ‘Marmaduke’. This is not beneath him.

    • tvgirl48

I cringed when I read this. Poor, poor Lee Pace. I’d love to see him on Vampire Diaries instead. After watching The Good Shepherd, I have a feeling he could do sinister well, an after watching Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, I know he can do sexy well.

    • Lauren

I completely agree that Lee Pace is an incredible actor and very possibly too good for this series. But consider, Michael Sheen is in Twilight, and who doubts his amazing acting? Anything Lee Pace can do to make his star rise and put him in more projects is good with me. Because the world needs more Lee Pace.

      • G

ITA! Not a fan of the movies, but it’s a high-profile role. Anything to get the rest of the world to know how amazing Lee Pace is!

    • Nat

I couldn’t agree even more! Not gonna lie, I loved the books, minus Breaking Dawn, but the acting in these movies are horrible. Some actors are good but the main characters just ruin the movie for me. Sad thing is Lee Pace would do so much better than most of these actors and his role would be so minor.

    • Susan

He was awesome on Pushing Dasies, but I don’t really think he’s better than Twilight seeing as he thought it was a good idea to make Marmaduke.

      • dee

        Gotta pay the bills somehow!

    • Akane

I hope he doesn’t do it, I don’t even remember that character, maybe he is in after chapter seven, all that part I really hated so I blocked it, anyway Lee Pace is a great actor and even though he might get some well deserved recognition from it, is not a good idea. Besides isn’t he doing a pilot for HBO, lets pray the show gets made and schedule conflicts won’t let him do the movie.

  • Leslie

    Lee Pace FTW!
Even though it’s Twilight, I’m glad to see him in anything.
I can see the sparkles coming off his skin right now…

  • Leeann

Since when was Garrett Edward’s best friend? How’d I miss that?

    • meg

you didn’t… people just keep saying that. random much?

      • Leeann

Ok, good. I’ve read Breaking Dawn a few times and didn’t remember that.

  • nirveeze

Please, the Cullens aren’t close to any of the vamps that come, there stuck up there own arses, or at least Bella’s and Renuzits.

3D BD would be the trash fest of the year, it already is going to be absolutely ridiculously, why not pile on the cheese. I hope they realize that taking it seriously won’t lead to anything good if they aren’t going to attempt to change the material.

    • Emma

LOL “Renuzits.” And they’re already talking about glossing over the birth scene, which, from what I’ve read, would’ve made a LOT of people see it, just for the sheer badness of it all. The comments usually go something like, “Wait, they’re taking out the birth scene?? That was the only reason I wanted to see this crapfest!” If you’re hoping they’re not going to take it seriously, don’t hold your breath.

  • Lily

Great. Now I’ll be forced to buy a ticket to this sure to be trainwreck of a film just to have my little sister wake me up when he’s on screen. Darn you, Lee Pace, for being so charming that I feel the need to support you no matter what!

    • Ellie

      I agree.

    • Ruth

I mean, I’ve never seen any of the movies. But I can basically just watch the movie for comedic value, and then stare at the screen in rapture when Lee comes on.
I couldn’t watch Marmaduke though. Ugh.

  • TBFan

I absolutely adore Lee Pace and will see him in anything. Did anyone see Ms. Pettigrew Lives for a Day? He was the main reason I watched that movie. God, I miss Pushing Daisies. What the frak was ABC thinking?!?

    • Taylor

He was FANTABULOUS in Ms. Pettigrew!

    • Lee

TBFan you took the words right out of my mouth. Loved him in Pushing Daisies and Miss Pettigrew. He is so cute and charming. I hate ABC for cancelling that (and Alias).

      • LoveVioletFlame

Ditto Lee! Hated when Alias and Pushing Daisies were cancelled. It did give Jen Garner some time off to get married and have babies. Speaking of which, both of her two cuties are beautiful and dimpled enough to play Reneesmee!

    • Karate Pants

LOVED Ms. Pettigrew and Pushing Daisies too! Great stuff.

    • melissa

Yup, Miss Pettigrew was great. (As was Pushing Daisies, obviously.) I love Lee Pace so I’m actually getting a tiiiiiny bit excited for Breaking Dawn, although I don’t remember at all who Garrett is.

    • Nat

I was a a absolutely livid when they canceled Pushing Daisies! I lived for that show! I think NBC was happy it got canceled cause they wanted to use the producer, Bryan Fuller, to help out with Heroes…. That didn’t seem to last but Pushing Daisies was actually good! He is so sexy in Miss Pettigrew lives for a day and I recently bought Possession….. Alternate ending is the best thing ever!

    • Heather

AUGH I will too! Oh I both want Lee Pace to not be in Twilight since I think it’s beneath it but I want him to be in it to show the Twihards what hottness really is.

    • Moira

No, you’re not the only one! I watched the film to see him, but fell in love with the movie (I’m a big classic movie geek, so I appreciated the screwball comedy-like script, too). He was so amazing in that and when he sang…I had to check my pulse multiple times to make sure I hadn’t died and gone to heaven. I cried when “Pushing Daisies” was cancelled and broke down in tears at the finale. He has shown in that and many of his other works how talented he is at many different genres. I would HATE to see him in anything connected to Twilight. He’s so much better. There’s a devout fanbase on imdb.com, mentioning him to play Mr. Darcy in “P&P& Zombies,” which I think would suit him well AND would be a project with some buzz attached to it. After all, in my opinion, he’s the sexiest man in Hollywood right now.

  • Hannah

Love you Robert pattinson!!!!! You are my idol!! You are hot and sexy!!!!

  • Marion

I would support Lee Pace in anything. He’s a darling.

  • Danni

Okay, it has been a really long time since I read Breaking Dawn. Who exactly is Garrett?

    • Leeann

He was the vampire from the Revolutionary War who called the Volturi out about why they all came to Forks and encouraged the other vampires to think for themselves instead of listening to the Volturi.

      • MG

He is all that – but not Edward’s best friend!! haha I think his best friend is his brother Emmett.

      • LoveVioletFlame

Good answer, Leeann! Further, he saves the day (or at least the Cullens and allies) by enduring Kate’s “fire touch” to hold her back from retaliating when the Volturi incinerate her sister.
Stephenie, through Bella, describes him as an ‘adventurer’ and he also helps Bella learn to fight.

  • girlnamedchuck

I hope he doesn’t do it, I adore him and I think he’s a million times better than crap like twilight. However, a (very, very small) part of me wants him to do it. I know I’ll end up seeing this movie either by force or to laugh at it, and if he’s in it, I’ll at least enjoy some of it.

    • kaci

hey chuck you are seriously lame if you would allow yourself to be forced into watching a movie that you don’t like… even more lame for watching it just to laugh at it… no life much?

  • Kat

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Don’t do it, Lee Pace! No amount of money is worth the blow this will deal to your cred as Someone To Take Seriously As An Actor.

  • cami

I would like for him to be in it simply for the exposure, but he’s not the Garrett I had in my mind. Maybe Eleazer?

  • rebecca

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I love Lee Pace, but why does he want to be in Twilight!!!

  • Danielle MacLennan

Garrett is not Edward’s best friend! Get your facts straight before you right an article…gees!
