'The King's Speech' wins Toronto Film Festival audience award

The King’s Speech has won the audience award at the Toronto Film Festival, all but cementing its status as an eventual Best Picture nominee. The British drama, about a king’s attempts to overcome a stutter, stars Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. The last two audience prize winners were Precious and Slumdog Millionaire.

An oscar win for Firth seems likely.

      About time he won one!

I’m not sold on the premise of this movie. It sounds like it could be boring. However, Colin Firth is fantastic, so it’ll probably be worth seeing just to see his performance. I hope he gets some recognition for it.

I agree, but some of the best movies I’ve seen this year have been based on boring-sounding premises, so I’m going to see it anyway.

FABULOUS movie, FABULOUS performance by Colin Firth – made even more so by the fact that the story could have been oh so boring but is oh so not

I go to TIFF every year and every year I complain about the People’s Choice award. It is based upon the number of ballots received. The problem is movies like The King’s Speech are presented during galas where 2000 plus people get to see the film during its first of two or three screenings. Smaller movies tend to play in smaller theatres to smaller audiences so they never really get the chance to win over the big gala films.

I can’t imagine Bella or Tsotsi getting big gala premieres, and yet they both won.

The theatre where Galas premiere is just one of many massive theatres used during the fest for all kinds of program. And many highly touted Galas absolutely flop when it comes to audience reaction, and/or walk away without a distributor – getting a Gala slot doesn’t guarantee anything. When you look at the entire history of the Fest, more Audience Award winners have come from the Contemporary World Cinema program than the Gala program…

So this movie is the exact opposiite of My Fair Lady.

The movie is far from boring. It’s well paced, beautifully acted and builds to a triumphant ending. I’ll be very happy when Firth accepts his Oscar. I saw it my third day in Toronto and the audience were cheering after the screening.

I can’t wait not to see this movie.

I can’t wait to see this one. The cast is brilliant: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham-Carter. Sounds like a winner to me.

Let’s not forget Guy Pearce. He’s always great.

      • Celimene

The world needs more Guy Pearce. Honestly, my favorite underrated actor out there.

Sigh, If only Fubar 2 had won.

Just kidding (kind of). The King’s Speech was fantastic!

  • dee123

Nope Firth won’t win (he might get nominated) but i smell another one for Rush.

Kings Speach Opened the Mill Valley Film Festival, attendees also calling for Best Actor & Supporting actor Oscars. Firth and Rush both rose beyond their roles to blur the line between lead and supporting actor. Both earned B/actor ocsar….!!!
