Warner Bros. opts out of 3-D for first installment of 'Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows'

Tags: , ,

Hey all you 3-D haters, you’re in luck. The first part of Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows will not be in 3-D. Warner Bros. announced today that the 3-D conversion of the first installment of the final chapter would not be completed in time. “We do not want to disappoint fans who have long anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey,” said the statement. As such, Part 1 will only be in conventional and IMAX theaters.

The move should be applauded as Warner Bros. is the studio behind Clash of the Titans, the Sam Worthington-starrer released in 3-D earlier this year. The movie was one of the first to adopt a post-production 3-D conversion process that was highly criticized in the press and became a poster child for all things wrong with the new technology. It’s clear the studio doesn’t want to be criticized again for another rushed conversion. Director David Yates will now have the time to turn Part 2, which bows July 15, 2011, into a 3-D spectacle worthy of the billion-dollar franchise.

Part 1 of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows opens worldwide on November 19, 2010.

    • Person Who Talks

YES!!!! SO FULL OF WIN!!!!! I HATE THIS STUPID 3-D “CRAZE”, IT’S RUINED A LOT OF GOOD MOVIES!!!!!!

  • Mole

Bravo Warner Bros! Don’t worry, we’ll make sure the movie still makes butt-loads of money. I’ll be there at the midnight screening!

    • Templar

The sooner this current 3D fad expires the better.

    Good!

    Great news.

I wasn’t going to see it in 3D anyway. Sometimes it seems like people think we are forced to see films in 3D. If you don’t like 3D, then don’t support it and see it in regular 2D. The option is always there. I won’t see Part 2 in 3D either, no matter how much time they spend converting it.

    • Mole

Same here. I will only see movies in 3D if they are conceived and filmed that way. While we’re not literally “forced” to see 3D movies, a lot of less-informed moviegoers often get misled into spending more money on 3D conversions of movies not meant to be seen that way. It’s maddening, and only a good thing, for movie lovers and proponents of 3D, that studios are showing more reserve in what they release in the format.

Not true. I used to live in a country town where they only showed 3d. Now i live in the city i have the option to skip it, which i will.

    • JonnyT

I agree, but the 2D option isn’t always available close to home. The one theater near me that carried a 2D version of a movie was so rundown and filthy I had to leave. Face it; most theaters want to draw the crowds and cash that come with 3-D, however crappy the quality.

  • Josh M

Well, it looks like I’ll be seeing it in theaters after all.

    • Silent Rage

(you could have seen it in theaters regardless)

      • Celia

I know right. I think some people were under the impression that WB was only releasing it in 3D. It was always going to be released in both 2D and 3D formats. Im actually a little sad that it won’t be in 3D, because there are quite a few scenes that would have looked amazing in 3D, like the 7 potters scene. But I deeply respect WB for putting quality first.

  • mikey

Yay! Since I wasn’t going to see it in 3D anyway, this means it will be easier for me to find (affordable, gimmick free) screenings in my area. Don’t worry WB, you are still going to make a Gringott’s vault full of money on this even without the 3D surcharge.

  • PK

Hurray! Stupid fake 3D is the worst.

Hopefully the positive reaction will get them to change their minds about Part 2 as well.

  • Al

    Good news!

  • B

Great! I say don’t bother with Pt. II, either. The other movies have done just fine w/o 3-D. It’s not needed.

  • chris

there are some of us who can’t see movies in 3D because of health reasons…

    • Derek

or because we only see out of one eye.

  • Lisa Simpson

Excellent. I really don’t see how anyone can sit through a feature-length movie in 3D. I get a headache just watching a 45-minute IMAX movie in 3D.

  • Trill

I’m out of the loop … What’s the difference between pre- and post-#D?

    • Trill

      # = 3

    • mikey

Pre (real) 3D is a film like Avatar that was shot with stereoscopic cameras and shots expressly constructed for 3D viewing. Post (fake) 3D is taking a file like Clash of the Titans that was shot with conventional 2D cameras and attempting to extract and composite 3D information from the 2D imagery.

      • mikey

        file = film

  • Amy

Hooray! I was worried I wouldn’t find a screen nearby that was just showing it in 2D. I hate 3D and plus it’s WAY more expensive! Going to the movies isn’t cheap as it is…

    • ReRe

      Agreed.

    • Celia

Most of the screens would have been showing it in 2D. 3D was just a side option like IMAX.

      • Alex

re:Celia. I’m afraid you’re mistaken. In a growing number of markets only the 3-D versions of films are being shown because the theaters can charge more. I never was able to see Alice on the big screen, or Resident Evil IV, because in my part of the world only the 3-D versions were shown. There would have likely been no 2-D showings of Harry Potter up here until the Blu-Ray came out.

  • Bibi

Thank you. I hate 3D, gives me a headache.

    • Barb

I, too, get a headache from CD. Also, I like the price of a regular movie much more.
