Image Credit: David Livingston/WireImage.comKevin Smith’s hockey movie, Hit Somebody, now has a lead. The director announced the casting of Nicholas Braun on his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On (#14). Smith had hoped his film would star Seann William Scott, who he’d worked with on Cop Out, but Scott ended up leaving him for another hockey film, the comedy Goon. There are no hard feelings though, because Smith found Braun, who also stars in his upcoming film Red State. “He’s this really, really great actor, who I love to death, and he is the perfect lead,” Smith said. Hit Somebody is based on the Warren Zevon song “Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)” with lyrics by Mitch Albom. The song centers on a Canadian farm boy: “The king of the goons with a box for a throne/A thousand stitches and broken bones/ He never lost a fight on his icy patrol/But deep inside, Buddy only dreamed of a goal/ He just wanted one damn goal.” Smith hopes to being shooting this summer. We may not know much about Braun (he starred in Sky High and is apparently really tall), but his sense of humor on Twitter seems promising.

Oh great. Another wonderful Kevin Smith movie. I can’t wait to not run out and see this one either. Who will he blame for the bad reviews and low ticket sales on this one?
all of kevin smith’s films might have low tickets sales but they all dont very good and most of them triple their budget
While Smith’s more recent stuff might have ut’s stinkers, his eearly work is some of the best dialogue driven cinema around. Like the other comment said, his return in relation to cost is one of the best in the business. I’ll gladly take my chances with his films over another big budget, PR and effects driven empty shell from Michael Bay, Ridley Scott or James Cameron.
He looks like a younger dark haired Bradley Cooper. Or maybe like if Bradley Cooper and Jonathan Silverman had a baby.
If you saw his Evening Out show, you would see Smith’s born-again enthusiasm for hockey. He’s studied the Gretzkys extensively. It’s going to be a great movie, and eventually one of the hockey classics! Thanks Kev!
Smith’s last flick Red State was excellent and made all the better by following the podcasts prior to release. I hope he sets up a Hit Somebody Podcast ahead of release to build it up. I’d also be pleased if he considers continuing with screenplays after he retires from directing… Still wanna see his take on Fletch!
