Hugh Jackman exclusive: How 'The Wolverine' director Darren Aronofsky got the star calling up The Rock

Wolverine-jackmanImage Credit: Michael MullerWill The Wolverine be the biggest hit of the X-Men universe? We won’t know till the film opens (reportedly in 2012) but it certainly might be our biggest Wolverine: Hugh Jackman tells EW that director Darren Aronofsky has already asked him to gain 25 lbs of muscle — “which is more than I ever have for the role” —  before filming begins next spring. “It’s not easy for me,” he says. “Because I’m actually quite long and lean.” For advice he turned to none other than The Rock! “I had a chat with Dwayne Johnson, who did 25 pounds for his movie,” Jackman says, referring to Johnson’s latest, Faster. “I rang him up and was like, Okay, tell me what’s going on.” The answer: Six months, a pound a week, 6,000 calories a day which, Jackman points out, is an awful lot of chicken, steak, and brown rice.

Still, he’s very excited about re-teaming with Darren Aronofsky (whose Black Swan is doing even better than expected in limited release), after previously working with him on 2006’s The Fountain. “I love every one of his movies,” he says. “He’s a visionary. I’ve been trying to get Darren since X-Men 3, really. We’ve been talking about this and Wolverine for so long.”

There aren’t too many details yet about the film, which is to be a one-off rather than a traditional sequel. But, Jackman says, “we had a meeting about three weeks ago, catching up as friends more than anything, and he just ran a few ideas by me and my eyes just lit up, because already I think this is like a whole new ballgame — just the ideas, the level of depth, and intelligence, and creativity. I think he’s been waiting so long to do a movie in this genre. When he found the script, he said this is it. It’s really exciting.”

Looking forward to this. I expect it to better than the Origin movie.

Jackman is a perfect Wolverine, and I pray this franchise never gets a “reboot”

Anything would be better than the Origin movie. X2 is still my all time favorite comic book movie, and I’m kind of looking more forward to X-Men: First Class than The Wolverine.

I loved “Origins”, except for the parts with “Worst Actor Alive”, Ryan Reynolds.

I think the first Wolverine gets a bad rap. It was a fun comic-book movie that was a significant step up from the awfulness of X-Men: The Last Stand.

Michael is right about the 3rd X-men movie, Brett Ratner really spoiled the series with that stinker. But having said that, if the rumors are true that this Wolverine is during the character’s time in Japan, I couldn’t imagine a better director than DA. There were so many images from The Fountain that were beautiful, haunting, and artistic. Set pieces like that with the action you expect from our furry hero. Can’t wait!!

Hugh Jackman is RACIST against pie and other baked goods!!! Face it, you ever see him eat? Look at the claws…

      this is so gay

      f off

      all fox’s xmen movies suck.
wolverine 1 should have swept the razzies, except transformers 2 came out that year.
the continuity is messed in this series, imo it shouldnt be continued.
The fox execs will ruin this with meddling even if it is good.

I hope it’s better than origins, but that’s not a very high bar. I hope it’s a ton better.

  • Alex

Here’s to hoping. Origins was such a wasted opportunity. There was a lot there that could have been cool, but was squandered.

  • Cygnus

I hope Aronofsky finally gets his due with Black Swan. He’s a phenomenal director with a lot of vision. The Fountain is one of my all-time favs. Looks forward to him directing main-stream fare.

Yup love the Fountain and Requiem for a Dream, he really is great.

      • hobbes242

I really liked Requiem for a Dream, but watching it made me want to curl up in the fetal position.

      • Vince from NYC

Watching it DID make me curl up in teh fetal position.

  • harry

    damn I’m excited!!!

  • markinnyc

the first wolverine movie was so so so so bad (movie about two guys with claws, yet there was little to no blood), I don’t know if it can recover. The plot made no sense, and the special effects were horrible (i’m looking at you, claws in the bathroom scene!).
while I do think Jackman is good in the role (although way to tall) and I love Aronofsky…it will take a few positive reviews to get me to see it in the theatre.

  • Stacie

I am looking forward to seeing those extra 25 pounds. Long and lean and I love it, but give me a beefy Weapon X!

  • JoshP

He was out of shape? I could have sworn I’ve seen him on the 100 Greatest beach bodies list all the time!

  • nodnarb

Every beach picture I’ve seen of him shows him frolicking in the surf with his personal trainer. So this story about him going to The Rock for fitness advice seems sorta gimicky. And 6,000 calories per day is ridiculous!!

    • Nino

Well, Michael Phelps claimed to eat over 10,000 calories a day training for the olympics so it’s not too far-fetched.

    • Jeff

Not ridiculous, no other way to put on 25. And he won’t be ripped either, just thicker. You know wolverine is only supposed to be like 5’6″ and weighs 225. Quite a difference from Jackman’s 6’2″ 185

      • d

if jackman weighs 185 then im a monkey’s uncle. he’s closer to 210.

      • matt

yeah and wolverine also had an adamantium skeleton so that may have added a few pounds there genius….

    • Vince from NYC

It’s not rediculous. What he left out was the two injections a day The Rock told him to use. There is only one way your body can obsorb that much protien and calories. I’ll give you a hint Jose Consaco wrote a book about it.

  • Robin

Jackmam plays any part well. I look forward to seeing more of his work. His emotions move me.

  • Molly

Surprising excited now that Aranofsky’s attatched.

  • Bo

25 more pounds of Hugh Jackman, all muscle? Yummy.

  • Kelly_J

But…will not be dangerous to Hugh’s health?

  • Kelly_J

I mean, ok he has always trained so hard at the gym and isn’t the first time that Hugh undergoing a tough diet, but 25 pounds are really too much…

  • vic vinegar

wasn’t there already one horrible wolverine movie? i hope that after the next batman, people stop making every comic into a movie.

  • B

I pretty much lost interest in everything X-Men, but if Aronofsky is directing, this could be a whole other thing. I LOVE The Fountain – I think it might be Hugh’s best work – so these two together again, I’ll definitely watch.
