And now, here it is: EW has learned exclusively that Hammer is in talks to join Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic, which will now be called J. Edgar. In the film about the former FBI director, Hammer would play lawyer-turned-FBI-official — and, some say, Hoover’s lover — Clyde Tolson. Though the pair didn’t always agree on political tactics, Tolson remained a loyal friend and advisor to Hoover. It sounds like a juicy role that fits perfectly with Hammer’s combination of brawn and brains.
Meanwhile, Vulture reports that Charlize Theron has been offered the part of Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk Hoover selected as his personal secretary at the age of 21, and who wound up working for him for over 54 years.
Eastwood will direct J. Edgar from a script by Milk Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black. Imagine Entertainment and Malpaso Productions are co-producing for Warner Bros. Filming begins early next year.

Hahaha, I really have to see The Social Network, because all I remember of his work is his godawful appearance on the (otherwise brilliant) show Veronica Mars. Oh, how he has come a long way.
Phillippe, as a tremendous judge of talent who has only seen his work on Veronica Mars, perhaps you should get out more.
Hah. Why the hostility?
I specifically started my comment by stating “I had to see The Social Network” – in other words, I have to familiarize myself with his work. I was hardly criticizing him. Second, outside of TSN, I doubt he has delivered many memorable performances considering his short filmography. Perhaps you should recommend his good work instead of saying I should “get out more”.
And the personal attacks… Really, now?
Yeah just because of one movie he has suddenly developed some sort of rabid fan base.
I first saw him in Reaper- and he played this d-bag, and all I wanted to do was slap him. And then I saw him in TSN, and I wanted to slap him again for being such a whiny, pretentious snob. But whatever… not like I hate the guy- just the characters.
Oh yeah Kurt the football guy, I forgot about that..lol He was good in The Social Network though.
He had a part in Reaper too, if anyone has seen that TV show.
He should play Superman in the next movie.
He is such a nice guy. He deserves to go far. He was great in TV shows like Reaper and Gossip Girl, honestly don’t remember him in Veronica Mars. But The Social Network showed he is a rising star and I’d be happy to see him and Leo in J. Edgar.
Brokeback Pentagon tee-hee!!
I also got the Brokeback vibe!
I was at a Q&A where he talked about the logistics of how he played tho two roles in Social Network and I have to say – FREAKING A. Definitely a fan until he does something flat-out awful. A well deserved career boost.
Armie Hammer is pure sex !
Yay! He was great in The Social Network, and assuming he’s on board, I’m actually started to get excited for Hoover (or, I guess, J. Edgar). This’ll be interesting.
