Aliens: cute or evil? Filmmakers have long bounced between the extraterrestrial tropes, giving us E.T.-style aliens who tug at heartstrings and Ridley Scott-esque aliens who eat heartstrings. But the trailer for upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul, directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland), about a pair of comic book aficionados on a successful expedition to Area 51, promises to fill the void between. Meet Paul, the regular guy alien.
Yes, Paul has an American accent, likes bagels, can show you the universe by touching your forehead. And also – he’s hilarious! The trailer doesn’t provide an overwhelming argument as to why people laugh so hard when Paul asks how long it’s been since his driving buddy got laid (other than that Paul is an alien) but it lays out barer reasons to be excited: the reunion of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), and turns from Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jason Bateman, and Seth Rogen as Paul. The cast also includes Jane Lynch, Sigourney Weaver and Jeffrey Tambor. Check out the trailer below:
