Art Directors Guild nominees announced

Today begins the flurry of guild award nominations that can give you a good idea of which films are going to do well with the Academy. (As opposed to the Golden Globes or critics groups, many people who vote for guild prizes also vote for the Oscars.) The Art Directors Guild has announced its 15 nominees, including all the expected visual feasts (Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Inception) and overall awards contenders (The Social Network, The King’s Speech, True Grit). Here are their lists:

The winners will be announced Feb. 5.

Contemporary has to go to Black Swan.

No idea on the others though, Alice in wonderland was a bad film but the art direction was stunning, but I can see it going to Inception.

Period piece, The King’s Speech I guess, and its nice that shutter Island is getting some recognition here.

    -The King’s Speech
-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (come on this film series deserves a win for art)
    -Black Swan.

Wow, the love for Harry Potter is surprising, it usually doesn’t win these things so I’m surprised it has support.

More importantly than predictions, Winter’s Bone is looking like it’s the 11th film out.

    “The Town”

    Great film.
Too bad they didn’t demolish Fenway Park in the process. LOL.

The King’s Speech, Alice in Wonderland, and 127 Hours will be the winners…

It’s interesting to me that a seamlessly designed film like WINTER’S BONE, drawing, as it does, environments that immediately define circumstantial specifics and character clarification, is pushed out of the line-up by some of the most generic Art Direction I’ve seen all year. The period list, okay, but the contemporary films (even the good ones) are about as particular and distinct as the home furnishing section in every Walmart across the entire United States.

For me the best are The King’s Speech, Tron and Black Swan! But…
