Variety initially reported the story, and a source close to the project confirms that Clooney will star in a script to be written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and Nathan Alexander (Valkyrie).

Fantastic book – hopefully a good adaptation will produce a good movie. Like Clooney, so could be a good film
Being half-Italian, I truly hope this is a good movie. Because George’s other Italian-filmed movie The American was really awful. I like George, but he can’t carry a movie alone, he needs other big names like Ocean gang to help him.
