The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven finalists that will compete for an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup. They are: Alice in Wonderland, Barney’s Version, The Fighter, Jonah Hex, True Grit, The Way Back, and The Wolfman. Missing from the list were Black Swan and Shutter Island. Three of the seven finalists will end up receiving nominations on Jan. 25. I’d call Alice in Wonderland the front-runner with The Wolfman also in the running.

How was Black Swan left off?
My thoughts exactly!
BLACK SWAN being left off is a huge surprise and total bull. I found the makeup in it more impressive than the makeup in any movie all year. Simply gorgeous!
Black Swan has been snubbed for an Academy award while Jonah Hex is a contender?
BLACK SWAN SPOILER
When log off this article, am I going to suddenly find that glass was in my stomach all along?
Alice in Wonderland…for sure.
I sincerely hope Johah Hex and the Wolfman don’t get Oscars nominations. Both films were terrible.
So was “Alice in Wonderland”, but the category is Best Makeup, not Best Makeup In A Movie That Wasn’t Terrible.
That’s a pretty pathetic list. Where’s Harry Potter? Or Chronicles of Narnia? 127 Hours? Even Robin Hood? Black Swan? Percy Jackson? The Tempest?
i was trying to think of makeup in harry potter, and then i remembered where ron got splinched. that alone warrants a spot. ah well. not heartbroken or anything
Your list is soooo much better than the Academy’s. It’s so wrong that HP isn’t nominated.
Why would 127 Hours be nominated? They don’t nominate gore at the Oscars. As for Jonah Hex and The Wolfman, makeup is makeup, doesn’t matter how terrible the movie was. Are we all forgetting about Norbit? That was nominated for an Oscar…
It looks like Alice has it in the bag. Where’s Harry Potter though? Ralph Fiennes make up isn’t good enough?
The nose is CGI, so I guess the rest of his face isn’t impressive enough? I would have voted for HP.
Why are there only THREE nominees in this category?
The trouble with makeup is that so often the Academy only recognizes the really flashy stuff. “The Social Network” for example. Without the hair, it’s just “Mean Girls” with guys.
The Social Network hair? I’m not sure what you mean by that.
Snubbing ‘Black Swan’ is a travesty. And ‘HP 7′ for that matter.
I’m surprised too about Black Swan not making the cut. Those feathers were astonishing.
I really hope Alice wins.
