In response to a $2 million lawsuit filed by the former lead publicist for the Golden Globes, which alleges, among other things, that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Globes, engages in “payola schemes” that involve accepting money and gifts in exchange for recognizing particular films, the HFPA has released an official statement refuting the charges: “[Co-plaintiffs] Michael Russell and Steve Locascio’s allegations are completely without merit. This is no more than the case of a disgruntled former consulting firm, whose contract was not renewed, attempting to take advantage once again of the Globe’s international stage for their own gain.”

If you show up, sit in the front row for the cams and take part in the show you get an award. And of course if your backers cut a nice check you get a big fake gold prise. It’s phoney ego baloney.
Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press have long been known to be “on the take”. Studios wine and dine them at lavish press conferences where each member enjoys having there picture taken with the celebrities they’ve interviewed but nothing will touch their credibility because the studios now prop them up because the Golden Globes have become a studio marketing tool.

Whehter the Globes are worth a dang or not, this rumor is still true quite likely, because if it wasn’t, we’d be seeing a LONG list of better, different movies nominated than we have the past decade…

IMO, Golden Globes (vous) should take a serious look at the Best Picture Musical/Comedy category. For any given year in which five well-deserved nominees in such category are rendered impractical, make it, for instance, three instead, SVP.
