Image Credit: Jaimie TruebloodWelcome back, Seth Rogen. The comic actor’s last three live-action films — Funny People, Observe and Report, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno — all failed to make much of an impact at the box office. But with The Green Hornet, Rogen finally delivered another hit. The $110 million superhero flick won the four-day holiday weekend with $40 million, according to studio estimates. That figure gives the Sony movie the second-best Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend debut on record, after 2008′s Cloverfield, which opened to $46.1 million. The pricier 3-D showings represented 69 percent of Hornet‘s business, with IMAX 3-D screenings accounting for about 10 percent of that total. The PG-13 film, which drew an audience that was 61 percent male, was also generally well liked. CinemaScore audiences handed it an overall “B+” grade, while those under 18 awarded it a straight “A.”
The Dilemma, however, failed to replicate the box-office prowess of star Vince Vaughn’s most recent projects. The Ron Howard movie placed second with a four-day tally of $21.1 million, and its three-day gross of $17.8 million represents Vaughn’s worst debut since 2003′s Old School (for a movie opening in at least 1,000 theaters). Although CinemaScore audiences gave the $70 million comedy an okay “B” rating, The Dilemma may quickly fade from theaters, especially with the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy No Strings Attached arriving this weekend.
True Grit grabbed third place with $13.1 million for the holiday weekend. Its three-day tally of $10.9 million was a mere 25 percent slip from the prior weekend, and the PG-13 Western has so far never dropped more than 40 percent. With $128.3 million to date and a number of Oscar nominations likely on the way, the film should have no trouble reaching $150 million. In fourth and fifth place were The King’s Speech and Black Swan, which earned $11.2 million and $10.4 million, respectively. The two indie breakouts each added more than 700 theaters this weekend, and should also benefit from the Oscar nominations, which are announced on Jan. 25.
In limited release, the Michelle Williams-Ryan Gosling relationship drama Blue Valentine collected $1.7 million from 230 locations. And Barney’s Version, for which Paul Giamatti won a Best Actor Golden Globe last night, took in $85,200 at four theaters.
Here are the four-day studio estimates:
1. The Green Hornet — $40.0 mil
2. The Dilemma — $21.1 mil
3. True Grit — $13.1 mil
4. The King’s Speech — $11.2 mil
5. Black Swan — $10.4 mil

Who are the villain’s names and who plays their parts?
The Dilemma did great when you think about how many A Holes blasted it for the whole gay thing. There is a ton of popular movies that have only made around 13 million in the opening week. Why do you have to compare it to Vince’s other movie earnings? I saw The Dilemma, the movie was much better than some of Vince’s other movies anyway.
agreed! I think The Dilemma definitely did better than other movies in the last 2 years…2010 was a tough movie year. The movie How do you know only made seven million in the opening weekend. That’s James L Brooks movie. How do you know had a great cast, 120 million was spent on it, and it opened in 3,000 theaters-then got lowered to 2,483. It has made 30 million so far…it’s been out since dec 17.
lol at least it did better than season of the witch. I’m so embarrassed for Nicolas Cage lol.
season of the witch opening weekend: 10 mill(2,816 theaters)
season of the witch 11 day total: 18 mill
the dilemma opening 4 day weekend: 21 mill(2,940 theaters)
YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE! lol
@beep,
The Dilemma must have very lowered expectations if you are comparing it to Season of the Witch. Doesn’t say much about the quality of the movie or its performance.

I went to see the movie because of Jay, and the movie turned out to be very entertaining.
I meant I went to see Green Hornet because of Jay Chou, the singer. And the movie was fun to watch, not a dull moment.
EW is so schizo. This article congrats green hornet as a hit, the other day it called it disappointing even though it was estimated to make the 40 mil that was estimated. Make up your mind. I liked the film
This is the worst news I’ve heard all day. That means that schlub Seth Rogen will be making more movies.
For once I agree with George W. Bush on something.
I agree. I seriously doubt he was the draw. His next few films will not do as well. This one will probably drop this weekend.
Well, so does Adam Sandler, unfortunately.
Seriously, George??? Get a grip! The movie is a disaster and will fall flat on its face next weekend. And Seth Rogen, the actor, will continue making movies regardless. Idiot!
Agreed. If that’s going to ruin your day, you should get out more. Personally, I like Seth Rogen’s movies and don’t really understand the backlash he’s been getting lately.
Completely agree Korey. Rogen doesn’t make movies about fart jokes and getting hit in the balls every ten minutes like Adam Sandler or Kevin James. He also tries different movies and has written some really great stuff(Superbad, Pineapple Express, Freaks and Geeks episodes, and Undeclared episodes). The lowest comedy he makes is about pot, and that isn’t that bad.
Seth Rogan is no super hero. He’s just another dorky, kinky haired, jew boy playing at movie star. The fact that this movie made millions is a testament to the stupidity, and gullibility of the movie-going public.Having zero historical awareness, they plod mindlessely to garbage movies devoid of real actors. With all the re-makes and ripp-offs,its, painfully obvious Hollywood is dead. Seth Rogan is just a pock marked zombie hanging around the grave site.
This was a VERY good film . People must learn sometimes that man does NOT live on opera alone . Man needs to listen to some weird Al yankovic every now and again . NOTHING wrong with that . Some people [the green hornet purists ] , have been trashing the Green Hornet simply because it didn’t come off as THEY wanted it . Well , that’s their opinion and they’re entitled to it . But for me , i LOVED the fresh take that Gondry and Rogen gave us on this one . Go in with low expectations and JUST ENJOY THE RIDE ! Now……….MAKE A SEQUEL Please .
