Image Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosGood news, Robert Duvall fans! At Friday’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Duvall told EW that he’s committed to working on the Billy Bob Thornton indie film project Jayne Mansfield’s Car. “It’s another Southern tale,” says Duvall. “It puts Tennessee Williams in the back seat — it’s that brilliant.” According to Duvall, Thornton — who co-wrote the script with Tom Epperson (the pair also wrote 1992′s One False Move together) — will not only direct but will star in the film.
Jayne Mansfield, of course, was a famous blond bombshell (and mother of actress Mariska Hargitay) who was killed at the age of 34 in an automobile accident in 1967. How the title of the film will tie into the script’s story remains to be seen. “It’s about a guy in between WWI and WWII who raises a family after his wife left him for an Englishman and moved to England,” says Duvall. “When the wife dies, she asks to be brought back to Alabama to be buried, and at that point the character hasn’t seen her in 20 or 30 years. The two families — her original family she abandoned and her English family — meet and then things get really interesting.”
The movie, which is being independently financed, is due to start production this summer.

AND this nonsense has WHAT to do with Jayne?
It is yet to be seen. I remember Jayne. She was a Marilyn Monroe wannabe.
Thought read that Mariska was actually a baby at the time and was also in the car during the accident that killed her mother, but she survived?
Also read that she was in the car along with her 2 young brothers and they all survived except her Mom. Feel this title is insensitive to Mariska and her family.
Agreed – insensitive to Mariska and her family, if it’s not actually a film about Jayne Mansfield.
Wonder How Jyane family feels about this?
WHY is it called JM’s car?
Read the article.
Well bagabou what do you expect from
a repub like Duvall?
@Vince – Nice. . . bring your politics into a movie discussion. Way to keep the national discourse civil there dude. Hypocrite
It’s a film, for crying out loud. Duvall did not write it. I love Duvall, and I’m a bleeding heart, tax-and-spend liberal.
I was wondering if there are going to be a need for any extras during the days of filming in Cedartown Ga? I have been an extra in several movies and would like to be apart of this.
Thanks,
Rob West
From what I’ve seen of the way they have dussied up certain buildings in Cedartown…I have to say it makes the rest of the town look like crap. I grew up there and it has never been much to look at, but wow.
I live in cedartown and whats going on is amazing and good for the town.
