Among the honorees — which are selected for fairly and accurately portraying the gay community — are films Burlesque, Easy A, The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Kids Are All Right, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. GLAAD also honored television as well: Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, True Blood, Pretty Little Liars, and Degrassi were nominated in the drama category, while Nurse Jackie, United States of Tara, Glee, Modern Family, and Greek picked up nods in the comedy category. Also nominated? Our very own Entertainment Weekly, for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage. (See the full list of nominees here.) The Media Awards will be presented in the spring.

Is there a reason for this awards show? Is it possible for there to be more choices than nomination slots so that they can eat least pretend that there is some kind of competition going on?
It had to be a bad year for gays in the movies if Burlesque scored a nomination…
Did you actually SEE Burlesque? It wasn’t bad.
Yes I saw it. “It wasn’t that bad” isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement and to nominate it as one of the best 5 films of the year, regardless of the criteria, is kind of pathetic. It was enjoyable enough for what it was…a campy, silly movie. But the Golden Globes say it’s one of the 5 best comedies/musicals of the year and GLAAD says it’s one of the 5 best representations of gays this year? If gay icon Cher wasn’t in it I bet it never would have been nominated. Nominating it means Cher and Christina might show up at your awards ceremony which translates to more publicity.
Not every critic panned Burlesque (SF Chronicle’s Mick LaSalle), and one of the songs just won a Golden Globe.
The Golden Globes have a long history of giving nominations and awards to unworthy people and movies. And even the worst movie ever could have a good song in it.
Not sure I understand the criteria for being nominated in the major categories. I can understand Glee and Modern Family but exactly are True Blood and Burlesque nominated? Just having gay characters should not be the primary reason for a nomination.
Yeah originally the GLAAD Awards were created to honor positive images of gays and lesbians in the media but it has essentially morphed into honoring “popular” over substance. The NAACP Image awards have done the same thing…neither is going to get publicity unless they can get big name stars to show up and receive awards.
Burlesque was a fun and entertaining movie. It deserves an award because not only did it star 2 gay icons, Cher and Christina but there was a storyline that was featured in the movie with one of the characters. So just because you don’t consider it a great movie, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t get recognition. Not everyone is going to be so closed-minded and uptight about nominations.
